*** The 2013 Gym Rats Thread ***

I'd really love to, but I can't. Don't want to say why on here, but I'm more than happy to tell you on the group.

Please do.

40kg and you fail? whats your routine like?

i've been on strong lifts for ~3 months now and my squats went from 40 to 110.. while pb's went from 60 to 130! you're doing something wrong.

Nice and helpful.

This.

9th of january this was your squats

6 months later you're still failing 35kg? u wot m8

Just no. You of all people know he's had issues with his squat along with some pelvic tilt which he's spent ages trying to fix. Stop being a douche.

While I agree strength should have improved he has changed the way he squats so this will naturally change the amount he can shift. My squat numbers dropped just after I changed my form so I can see where he's coming from.

Warning: incoming rant.

Why is it that on Tuesday I could go into the gym and squat 40 kg like it was nothing, yet today I struggled to finish my sets at 35 kg? I should be feeding off newb gains, and my strength should be going up, not down!

The only other thing I was able to do in today's session was dumbbell rows, for the first time in nearly a year. Yet I still couldn't feel jack in my lats, felt everything in my tris.

I've made no progress at all in the last 6 months. Hell, I still can't squat my own bodyweight. I go into the gym everytime pumped up and ready to perform. But before I've even finished my sets, I can't wait to leave. It shouldn't be like this :( At the moment every session makes me feel completely **** about myself :(

Rant over.

Bro, I know how you feel. Today I wasn't feeling so strong, so I had to drop mine from 140kg to 120kg. Feeling weak!

:p trollollololl :p

Srs though, maybe post a video of your form up in the form thread for the masters here to pick apart?

I'm not being a douche. There is something definitely wrong. He also claimed his bench had plateud at 32.5kg in march, after it was 30kg in january. Did he also do a major form change to his bench that caused this, or is it likely to be the same problem. I'll place a large bet on the latter.

Strength is relative and all, but they really are weights that shouldnt take months to add a couple of kg to, form changes or not.

I stalled on bench for ages (at about 60kg) - (Self taught) then realised that I was holding the grip far far far too close to activate my chest muscles at all - moved my arms further apart & started making progress really quickly lol.

The downside to being self-taught..., I was using my triceps almost exclusively for bench-press (which explained by they were over-developed).

@TheCenturion - Have you tried a personal trainer? - it may be a form related issue which is holding you back.

Stick your heads in the form thread yourselves and you'll see he's already been there :p

I agree with what others are saying regarding food. Eat it! The other thing to ask which is of crucial importantance more than food is what does the routine look like?

---

The other thing to note is your body is not a machine. You will have good days, mediocre days and bad days, that just happens. Also strange things will happen, like having a boozey weekend not eating all that great, and then having one of your most productive sessions ever on the Monday! It just happens!

Apologies, I don't frequent that section often at the moment, bandwidth here doesn't really like that part of the forum :p

So that is the extent of my "advice" for him, I'll leave it to the experts!

CENTURION - don't become disheartened you sexy mother. Keep working! :)

I know that. But is a form issue really going to stop someone benching more than 30kg? :X Can't see it myself.
I dunno, as a new lifter (if he's totally self-taught) it could be form related.

I had my bench form all wrong & stalled at 60kg odd after a few months due to it, noticed when I started going to the gym that my form was "different" to others e benching considerably more (changed it to match closer) & suddenly started making gains again.

I'd say he should try a session with a personal trainer to go over form & if they know what they are doing (big if) they should be able to point out any form or physical issues which are holding him back.

What on Earth do you mean by self-taught? You keep saying it as if it's a thing. So you rocked up with zero knowledge of how to bench, have it a go, and thought "yeah that seems about right"!?

No proper guidance.

self-taught. adj. having learnt oneself without any external or formal instruction

You can find information on-line which is less than helpful & without experience have no frame of reference to know if it's all BS.

I have no hassle saying I watch videos while on a cooldown to make sure im getting the form to the best I can (without having someone there with me guiding me).

Surely information online is external instruction? ERM DERP? :p

Did you see the word can?. DERP :p

I started lifting (nothing too major), then after it wasn't working starting looking online (found terrible advice) - continued, then get some better advice on here (for my squats), then got some from some experienced lifters at my local gym later on (when I stopped doing it in the garage).

Suppose I was lucky that I started posting here as soon as I started training!
Yup, I wish I had - would have saved wasting time at the start.
