*** The 2013 Gym Rats Thread ***

Quick question guys... I've just completed week 3 of SL and am enjoying it. However, for the next 2 weeks I've got a contract to work in some random village near Cambridgeshire - with the nearest gyms being either a 27 mile or 65 mile journey! Most of these gyms open/close during my working hours. I come back home on a Thursday night so could do a Friday and Sunday workout. Would it be best to do SL for 2 workouts per week during this period or do some other ish?

Cardio question (I know, lift instead... :p)

Treadmill at 1.5 incline & speed 7.8, 1 mile in 8.15. I guess that's fairly acceptable? Problem is i'm close to exhausted after 10mins... How do I best work to improve this to achieve the same results over longer distances? Lower the speed or the incline? Or just keep repeating on current settings till it gets easier past 10 minutes?

Why do you want to do longer distances?

Good question, reason is purely because it seems 'most' people run more than a mile :p being capable of 5k doesn't sound like a bad thing to me?

I only do the cardio pre weight work tbh, typically 1 mile run + 6k cycle (20 mins total). It just seems like I should be capable of not dieing after 1 mile.

IMO that is dumb.. I can't run a mile(I think never tried tbh) and I only lift and cycle... running 5k doesn't make "fitter" than someone who can lift double their B/W

also doing cardio before weights won't help.. you'll be exhausted by the time you get to the bar! :o

If you want to train to be able to run/cycle longer then great, just as long as you realise that those are isolated goals and won't help with anything else (i.e. fat loss).

To be fair, a person would be fitter in terms of their endurance in running.

Fitness is a term that encompasses many factors.

Ok thanks guys, noted. It is purely an endurance increase goal, but realistically I don't want to inhibit muscle gain either. I might look at doing it after weight work or on different days.

Have a read of platypus's running guide but you could try Fartlek as a training method, essentially you're varying the speed and it may help you to build up some endurance.
