*** The 2014 Gym Rats Thread ***

Is it normal for delts to fatigue way before chest and tris during bench press, as a beginner?
Absolutely not.

You are benching with your shoulders too far forwards.
While I'm sure it could be improved (quad dominant) I train with BWL-qualified coaches so it's nothing that's so obvious it could be seen on a video. I do low-bar though to try and mitigate my quad-dominance.
Yeah...

If they've not seen it, they might not be good coaches. Jus' sayin'.

Doing low bar to mitigate quad dominance... All of that is... interesting?

Right you knowledgeable lot quick question.
I've got a female friend who has recently joined the gym and has her wedding coming up in 8 months so she wants to slim down.
Luckily she's completely open to following whatever routine I set out for her so none of the usual "OMG I can't touch weights or I'll turn into a female version of the hulk!" crap.

At the minute I'm just thinking to set her up with a simple routine such as the one is GordyR's bodybuilding thread, so it'll give her a decent all over workout with compounds as well.
Plus she likes to spend some time on the bike/treadmill so I'm going to throw 20-30 minutes of that onto the end of each session (Don't want to scare her off with HIIT sessions straight off the bat).

I'm also teaching her to swim (I can't believe she made it to her 30's without someone teaching her!) so there will be extra cardio from that.
Sound sensible or is there anything that specifically works better for females?

Sounds reasonable, the cardio alone will help, just the lifting will stop her looking like a sack of ****.

8 months is loads of time as well :)

My thoughts exactly mate, she's reasonably active as she works in a reception class so always chasing the kids around but this is the first sort of proper exercise she will have done in a long long time.

The only problem I can see is the medication she takes for migraines is also prescribed for weight gain as 9 out of 10 people who take it gain at least 3 stone or something ridiculous.

Sounds like a solid plan.

You are probably going to have to delve into her diet a bit though.

I know and that's going to be the difficult bit, bloody veggies! but first things first I'll get her happy with what she's going to be doing in the gym then I can move on to looking into her diet which I know isn't great.

One plus side to her being one of my housemates is I can stand in the kitchen and remind her just how much gym time she'll have wasted when she tries to eat **** :D

She's going to hate me.

Getting in to decent shape and sorting out my diet has actually reduced my migraines from frequent to extremely rare - maybe she'll find the same?

Hello all, i've been saying for about a year I will go to the gym and typically like a lot of people I havent, but now i've really told myself I have no reason not to, it's really not that hard, just do it. So I am going to start, the diet etc should be fine, i've read the beginners guide I just have a few specific questions to do with myself, I do a lot of shift work, sometimes overnights, sometimes meaning I may be limited to 5/6 hours sleep 2/3 days a week, but otherwise it'l be around the full 8 hours, will this negatively affect me or will these isolated cases not be too bad?

Also people talk about noob gains a lot, I know from person to person it'l always be different but they sound like the perfect motivator, with a proper diet and schedule just how noticable are these noob gains typically? i'm 6'3 and around 12/12 and a half stone, and while im not expecting after 6/8 weeks to have an incredibly athletic physique if you do notice some visible/encouraging things early on I think that would be a great motivator to me personally as I do like to see visual improvement no matter how small or big, it's a good motivator I think so I was wondering what kind of things I should be expecting to happen when I first start out, do certain muscles react quicker than others etc? things like that really, just general just starting out tips and advice, thank you for the help :)

Not really. I train on 6hrs sleep quite regularly and it's not really an issue. :)

Considering you are probably pretty slim and tall, the 'tallness' will stretch out any gains (noob or otherwise) meaning you have to put more work in to achieve the same physique as a manlet.

HOWEVER, after a couple of weeks you will notice your muscles becoming noticeably firmer and more pronounced, but "that" physique - the one in all the magazines/adverts - takes time. A lot of time (2+ years depending on where you're starting).

Practically speaking, from what I understand the muscles of the upper body (thorax/arms) have more testosterone receptors and will - therefore - inflate faster than others. Because eveolution favours those who attract moar mirins. ;) :D
