So, its been what, two? Three years since I hurt my back? Since then I've pretty much had chronic pain or some form of pain there. I'm getting a bit sick of it now, without a disposable income though I can't afford the massage and private osteo appointments.

Is there not a monthly private healthcare thing I can enrol on and get x appointments a month or something? But that is cheaper than paying for individual sessions?

It's funny, because professionals hit plateaus. They then regroup, and change their training style, work on mobility and technique work to push past it. It's not as simple as just pick up a heavier weight and get on with it. Sometimes you do have to pick the heavier weight, but know how to train with it to make the improvement.

I guess it's also partly a mental plateau too, so mixing it up just for a little while feels like the right thing to do.

Welcome to the triple digits club bro! Get your training logged!

Thanks man! Been meaning to start one, will get it up soon.

Does anyone track all their progress/training sessions on a spreadsheet or google doc? If so, anyone got a sample one for layout purposes? I want to digitise my progress to track it, but not sure of the best way of doing it.

Have you done all the exercises regularly (every day)

Guessing it's lower back pain and you tend to spouch/hunch now?

There are health 'cashback' plans which you pay a monthly amount towards which 'refunds' costs such a dental, optical and physio among others, these always workout well if you claim everything but admittedly they have a solid limit to how much you can claim for each catergory each year (eg £100 optical, £100 dental, £200 Physio).

Other option is private health insurance which they'll try and 'fix' you till you are functional again.

I'm part of one of these but they don't cover existing injuries so be sure to check the T&C of whichever you go with.

No I've just been to see these people and ignored them.... :p

Hunch? Not usually no.

Only asking cause most people don't do the exercises

Ahh my pain now aplenty is my lower back curving roo tight to compensate for my upper back curving forwards

But the muscles and tissue in my upper back is s stiff and tight tight that it takes considierible effort to try and straighten it to neutral day tod ay.

That's why the massages were so good agony to go though but afterwards everything was loose enough I could stand straight without resistance so no pain.

Just an update on my shoulder issue! I went and had an MRI scan done in mid August and I've just been to discuss the resultswith my specialist. I'm dealing with a torn front labrum in the shoulder, which he's said is a rather large and full tear. I'm waiting for a date for surgery in which 3 to 4 anchors will be drilled in to my upper arm and lots of sutures to fix the tear will be put in place. 3 weeks immobilisation, 3 weeks regaining range of motion and 6 weeks of resistance band physio before I'll be allowed to lift heavy again and a full 6 months before contact sports/risk of falling on it can be taken up again

Surgery booked for the 23rd October :o Going to be a rough few months but hopefully it'll be worthwhile in the end.

I know the feeling of having a long-term bad back. Just wanted to chime in to say I suffered with lower back issues for over 4 years. Mine is better now. In fact, it feels stronger than prior to my issues!

I can’t narrow it down to one thing specifically as I tried so many things but I have a sneaking suspicion it was predominantly due to my core (or lack thereof) and not engaging it properly. I think prolonged lifting without a tight core caused the issues - I never had a particular moment of injury.

Every injury is different but I just wanted to say there is hope! I suffered for ages and now I’m back lifting and almost matching my old PBs.

Things I did:

  • Fixed/changed/tried various versions of correct posture!
  • Changed from sleeping on my front (I know, terrible idea) to my back. I’m like a vampire in a coffin now
  • Tried a standing desk rather than a seated desk. Wasn’t a big fan!
  • Pilates - get that core working in mysterious ways
  • Yoga - fix the bits I didn’t pick up when going through…
  • Mobility Wod - tackle everything that could possibly be related!
  • Physio - personally wasn’t a huge amount of help!
  • Scans - I apparently had a minor disc bulge. Physio concluded the bulge was likely unrelated to the pain. Apparently loads of adults have bulges with no symptoms.
  • Acupuncture - I was willing to try anything. This did not help.
  • Changed my shoes - tried both well cushioned trainers and minimalist ones too. Stuck with the minimalist.
  • Other core stuff - I did dead bugs although started off even more basically. Lay on my back, arms down by my sides and did one leg at a time. Did that for 3 sets of 10 reps on each leg for about 3 months every day.
  • Ankle flexibility - mine was awful. I can now comfortably sit in a squat bare footed and upright. I’d just fall over before. Rough theory was high bar squatting would put less pressure on my back. Sat in a squat with a 60kg barbell across my knees for 10minutes every day for about 5 months. Still don’t have super ankle flexibility but it’s now acceptable. Not a fun process but got through a lot of podcasts!

I lurk here quite a lot and I know you’ve tried your fair share of things. But don’t give up! I tried to be relentlessly optimistic that I’d fix my back and finally I have!

Best of luck with it :)

Reckon on a good day I've got 100kg paused in the bag at my waify 63kg bw...

Non-paused slightly dive-bombed single = 110kg
4 sets of 8 = just about got all 32 reps with 90kg...

Might end up squatting more than a child if things keep improving.

EDIT - 'ere

Should really post some upper body stuff too, I'm not all squats.

Advice:

I have a gym membership I never use, I'm considering getting rid of it.

I'm 23, fairly fit, I do a lot of cycling and some running but I joined the gym because I have basically 0 body strength other than my legs, I'm weedy.
Not looking to get 'ripped' just not be a plank of nothing. Is buying some weights for home going to actually get me anywhere?
