Yesterday's quad session I was joined by a friend;

warm-up Squats
20 x 4 (60, 70, 80, 90)

Squats
12 x 4 (120, 120, 130 130)

Leg Press
12 x 5 ( 250, 250, 300, 300, 300)

Leg extensions
10 x 3 tempo (6second squeeze at top)

No huge numbers, todays session was about volume and getting a good squeeze.

However, my friend who joined me is FEMALE !! 60kg, and matched me weight for weight - absolutely insane strength!

makes you think, often or not there is someone out there warming up on your 1 rep max!

That's very impressive, because most 58kg category weightliftgers at the Olympics and even their heavier sisters in the 63kg categories couldn't pull off 130*12 on squats.

Which suggests a couple of things:

- Your friend is a genetic freak;
- Your friend juices even more than the top female weightlifters out there;
- She wasn't squatting to full depth.

Regardless, it's still pretty epic.

point 1 & 3

her legs are FREAKISH BIG for a woman of her size, and they are far from full depth (maybe I should have mentioned that) even for her to shift that weight and get them under that tension is impressive.

Only photos I can dig out back in May at Bodypower, but gives idea of the size

Yes, you probably should have mentioned that the squats weren't to depth because that turns them into a different exercise. ;)

I can probably unrack and partial 150kg for a fair few, too... :D

Regardless, based on the photo you posted, she does look ideally suited to squatting (short legs, long torso).

To be honest 20mph average is pretty damn fast too. 26mph average....I don't want to sound like an arse but I find that a little hard to believe unless, as you say, it's all one long down hill section.

Can't find his quickest one at the moment, will ask him when I get back to work tomorrow. Hopefully if you can see this:

Yeah think it's definitely easier one way. Mine is as well, going home from work for me is a bugger, I get nearly 500ft of elevation the shortest route. Still, we do 12 hour shifts on our feet, I am ****ed by the time I get home.

I'm guessing after 12 hours on your feet and the ride home you sleep damn well though :)

So the new year rolled in and i was supposed to hit the gym yesterday, didnt happen! Pounding headache and felt utterly useless come 4pm. Today i have come prepared and my pre-workout will be paracetamol and a coffee. Heres hoping to a better 2015 then 2014 :)

Not a great start to the year, finished off some HIIT last night and my heart started going crazy, treble beating (could feel the thud) then pause, repeat, took a good 20 minutes for it to calm down. Checked my blood pressure and it's pretty high, going to go to the doctors and get an ECG I think.

Worth checking - I had an arrythmia before last Christmas getting an echo check at your local hospital is the normal pathway AFAIK. Mine has settled down now and I only get it slightly if very dehydrated (which I understand to be high blood pressure related). Although clearly never take medical advice from the internet and see what the doc says!

As someone who ignored chest pains after an intense back session with HIIT for 12 hours only to call the doctors and get rushed to hospital with a suspected heart attack, I wouldn't mess around. Always get things checks when it comes to your heart, that episode taught me that the NHS will never think you're wasting their time when it comes to the heart no matter how minor you think it is, as they are very thorough!!

Luckily, after X-Rays, an MRI and an angiogram it turned out to be pericarditis so I was lucky, but it could have been a lot worse and I'd be paying the price for leaving it so long!

Not sure if I’m over doing it or not.

The story is last year I started bulking at around 71kg. By Feb I was around 73kg and by the end of the year I was 80kg. I have been 80kg for about 3-4 months. Over Xmas due to illness and then xmas/lazy I lost about 1kg and a little bit of performance.

I'm back now and training hard. My friend is the one who has been helping me through this. We where talking and I said, another 3 months and I will want to cut. But I have stalled on my lifts. My targets have been 24kg shoulder press for 8x4 and a flat chest press of 30kg 3x8 (all dumbbells).

The closest I have been to these targets are 8,7,6,6 on shoulders and 8,8,7 on chest press. But that chest press was literally like squeezing blood from a stone.

My friend said to me how heavy are you? I said 80kg. He said to me so your fat then! :p I said yea. He thought about it for a while and said well go back on a surplus for a month or two and try and reach these goals.

I know what I eat on a daily basis. It doesnt vary that much and I know what I was eating was maintanence for me at 80kg. So I thought how on earth am I going to add MORE to my diet. I already eat loads. Then I thought, a pint of whole milk added to the diet should do it. Loads of muscle building goodness in that.

---

So I restarted again in the gym on the 29th Dec weighing 79.1kg, I now weigh 80.6kg. The good news is that within a week I managed to squeeze out my 8x4 shoulder press! So something worked however I don’t know if I’m gaining weight too fast or not.

Here is my weight log over the last week or so. I’m not surprised I hit 80kg so quick as I was 80kg for the last few months.

29th Dec 79.1kg
30th Dec 79.4kg
1st Jan 79.7kg
2nd Jan 79.6kg
3rd Jan 79.2kg
4th Jan 79.2kg
5th Jan 80kg
6th Jan 80.6kg

Can anyone explain the reason why it has gone up and then down and then up again? Or why this even happens?

Secondly am I over doing it with the milk? I mean a pint of whole milk is approx 500cal, which is quite a bit really in addition to what I am already consuming. Maybe I should back off and only add half a pint?

I am literately trying to reach my targets as quickly as possible, maintain them for a 2-4 weeks so I can start cutting as I am a good 10-15kg over weight!

Thanks and sorry for the long windedness.

Bet you my testicles you don't.

considering this is over the festive period I would not be surprised at any faster than usual weight gain.

Daily fluctuations are normal, all kinds of variables come in to play, differences in daily energy expenditure, fluid consumed, volume of food, sodium/potassium etc. Anything around 1lb 0.5kg isn't unusual for me. 7 day rolling average is more useful for establishing weight trends.

Secondly am I over doing it with the milk? I mean a pint of whole milk is approx 500cal, which is quite a bit really in addition to what I am already consuming. Maybe I should back off and only add half a pint?

Sounds like it but a week and a half worth of data isn't that reliable, especially over the festive period and when, I imagine, the remainder of your food intake isn't as consistent as you think.

Just increase your portion sizes instead of guzzling down gallons of milk.
