*** The 2017 Gym Rats Thread ***

Most social media lifting people are insufferable parrots of poorly understood original content. I follow a few athletes and a couple of people in the industry who occasionally post interesting material.

Alan Thrall used to be ok, but he seems to have become a starting strength zombie.

Been watching a few of his videos myself, do like his emphasis on longevity and sustainability rather than "fast results now" mentality that you get from some.

I've been continuing the Stronglifts workout but trying to add extra bits to make it a bit longer. Especially since it's still at moderate weight levels.

Workout 1
Squats
Bench Press
Bent Over Rows
Lat Pulldown Front Wide
Lat Pulldown Front Close
Lat Pulldown Back
Don’t know its name but using the lat pulldown machine an standing with arms out in front and then moving them down to my waist

Workout 2
Squats
OH Press
Deadlifts
Rear Flys
Front Flys
Bicep Curls on cables
Tricep pulldowns on cables

Also been doing incline crunches between the squats and leg raises between bench/OH press just to add some core work.

Does that sound reasonable and anything i should add/change?

Has anyone on Stronglifts upgraded to the premium version? At the moment i use the SL app but then move to Excel on my phone for the extra exercises but it'd be nice to do it all in one place.

Ah, i saw the accessory work on the app but thats unlocked by paying for the premium version. Didn't know if was available on the website.

At the moment it makes the whole workout about 60mins which is good at 5x5 for each. I imagine as the weights increase though i'll need much longer between sets.

He's actually pretty good, despite what you'd expect from the branding/image.

I must confess to not really watching many YouTube lifters/gurus, so I will trust icecold's opinion (he is, after all, the guru). ;)

As icecold suggests, most of the people on there use a platform when they shouldn't have one... basically, if Eric Cressey or his colleagues talk about it, it is worth listening to/watching.

:-*

There are very few people that I actually find interesting; honestly there are people who post on here who know more (mrthingyx included, of course) than the vast majority of self styled coaches/experts. It doesn't help that with powerlifting in particular that people are happy to call themselves coaches after lifting for a year and doing a couple of comps (is there any other sport where this phenomena exists?!).

Mr Thingy will be happy. I have started to incorporate more oly lifting in my routine. Cleans, snatch (oh I'm so bad at this!), overhead squats, front squats.

I only train 2x a week sometimes 3x, so the oly circuit helps with the mobility, and conditioning side of things. The rest of the routine is pure powerlifting, bar bench (I do floor press and ring dips as I don't have a bench). Lots of squats, deads - fun stuff.

I'm loving the gym at the moment, just not loving the lack of time to do it.

Go on - say it: you love it because of the Olympic lifting. ;)

And to say I am happy is an understatement, but this is a family forum and I can't quite express it right. ;)

ha! I do go through phases, it's good to shake the body up a little. And look at the oly lifters, they're not as if they look bad either ;)

I just need better bumper plates - I'll treat myself to more toys this summer.

Am I right in saying Stronglifts is the same 3 exercises over and over?

This is also the core format only, there are many very good assistance exercises you can add in, 2-3 per day max. Also 1x5 deadlift is widely accepted to be completely insufficient. Carry over the 5x5 format on deads until they become tasking then drop to 3x5 at the working weight when they do become taxing.

After watching the European championships last week I was playing around doing the snatch drill from this (amazingly helpful) video the other day and had delusions of grandeur. I did manage to propel the bar properly up once or twice and grinned like a goon.
