*** The 2018 Gym Rats Thread ***

After 4 years of going to the gym i have finally understood the macro side, damn it i would have been ripped by now lol ooooh well 2018 is the year lost 7 pounds in a week.

Cant believe the portion sizes i was eating the last few years, i was eating good food but unfortantly 3 times the portion size live and learn hey.

Lets do this :)

Was 13 stone 5 pounds
Today 12 stone 12 pounds

Hoping to get back to a good standard this year.

Need to sort out a shoulder injury.

But hoping to achieve 190 dead, 150(+) squat and 110 bench.

Shouldn't be all that difficult as I've managed more before, but I was more dedicated to the gym then and I managed only 20kg off them all at the end of last year. Slow progression this year, too many other hobbies getting in the way. So just to keep that level of strength would be nice, rather than losing it all and building back up again and again.

Dislocated my shoulder again last Tuesday (you may have seen on the super secret roided up FB page) - no real goals set because of this.

If I can get back to my 2017 1RM by the end of 2018 (assuming no surgery) I'll be happy :(

Gym is already quieter!!!

Finding my squat, leg extension, calves routine a little easy now. Going to throw some front squats/leg press in, although perhaps on a separate day. Just need to be cautious of my AC joint again, but it is mostly normal now and certainly pain free.

Ouch, sounds painful. How did you do that?

Not often I post in here.. Just wanted to vent off.

So after 30 years in the gym, pausing only for illness and holiday, I go for ACL knee stabilisation in just under a fortnight. It will be the most time I've been away from the gym since I started. For that reason alone, I'm bloody dreading it. Not knowing when I will return, if I'll loose my motivation to return? If I'll never be able to get to the fitness I'm at now. How long, given my age (50 next month), will it take me to recover? Running is very important to me too.. I wonder if i'll be able to ever do that again... not that I can at the moment anyway.. but I can cycle jog gently..

I know people have a lot worse things .. it's been important part of my life style for so long that I don't know any different.

Sorry to hear this, dude, but as part of a lifetime's habit you'll be back in no time. :)

I am sure you will bounce back. It is just frustrating in the meantime. What happened to your knee?

Sorry, I've only just seen this.

It was done boxing, threw a stepping in jab which was slipped by my sparring partner - his shoulder drove in the underside of my arm and it "popped".

Bench pressed last night with just the bar, and then 40kg to test it, and didn't seem to have any issues, MRI booked for 19th Feb though to confirm damage.

I used to train 4-5 days a week until my daughter was born almost 2.5 years ago, now got an 8.5 month old too. I was once pretty strong and fairly lean, as well as having ok cardio fitness from cycling. I've probably only trained approximately 15 times in the past 2 years, my strength and more so my cardio fitness have dropped massively.

Anyway since getting over illness over the Christmas period, I've been trying to get into the gym at least 2 days a week. I'm using this as a starting point to build up fitness and strength before starting a proper routine of such. But more so to just get back into the habit of going to the gym again.

It shouldn't be too hard as I've got a pretty good setup in my garage, but i tend to go out there after my girls have been put to bed, so it's 8pm and it's pretty cold this time of year. So far though i'm enjoying it, and starting to feel the gains in cardio fitness and stamina. Strength is still weak in comparison and my technique is probably way off still. But i know this will come back if i can keep up the habit of training at least 2 days a week.

No goals at this stage other than to just get fitter, stronger and to hopefully lean up a little over the year..... But will likely start posting here for advice on things while getting back into the swing of it

How often did you do a cheat meal or day and what sort of food would you have for that day ?

I have eaten perfect following myfitness pal for 2 weeks now but feel like i need a cheat day or meal not sure whats best i will make it to next week but need something bad lol, i lost 7 pounds when i last looked so things are going in the right direction :)

Thanks

Have had a few good gym days. All lifts are progressing well. Left hand is sore though, feels like the tendons are swollen just behind my little finger on my palm. Not had that before. Hurts mostly when benching.

Hoping to get my weight under control this year was 125kg (and rising :( ) when i last weighed myself. As for my lifing goals, for sets i would like to be lifting the following by the end of the year:

200kg Deadlift - currently 150kg
100+kg bench - currently 85kg
150kg squat - currently 110kg

I'm going to try and post this year since I keep putting it off. I've had a lot of help and motivation from people here, just never quite made it to posting and saying thanks. :)

The plan is to stick to a 5x5 linear program focusing on bench and deadlifts over squats. Not sure how well this will work with deadlifts though. I know I need to stop just doing some kind of heavy weight and doing sets of 3-5.

I’m still doing Thai boxing once a week and now climbing (bouldering) twice a week as well. The climbing has massively helped my grip, and along with form tweaks I'm much happier with deadlifting.

I still find it difficult to eat enough to gain weight and stick with a routine. Believe I should be slowly gaining weight but I seem to jump up a bit and then plateau and then repeat. Up to 71kg (from 65kg) now and feel the only thing that's grown is my belly but the weights are going up.

Guesstimating current 1rm as:
Bench: 70
Squat: 135
Deadlift: 130

Goals are to try and stop taking weeks off for one reason or another and reach:
1.5xBW bench = 105kg
2xBW squat = 140kg
2.5xBW deadlift = 175kg

I'm not a heavy gym goer, just do some cardio on treadmill, rowing machine, dumbbells, resistance machines, just to try keep lean, fit n healthy.
Any recommendations for good, all round training shoes?
Had some Nike fly-knit style which are comfy, but didn't last that long.
The Reebok Nano 8's are meant be great but theres only a few colour choices and not keen on any of them, plus don't wanna be classed as a cross-fit ******!
Nike Metcon Repper DSX or Adidas PureBoosts DPR any good?
