The 328i - A bit of a project

This thread makes me want to post pics of my 328i sport, shame its dark! I've seen your journal on e36coupe forum Invader, keep up the good work and keep that journal updated.....or this one...or both lol!

:|R420LA6X2/4MNA: your car would be perfect if it had the wider Sport/M3 bumpstrips down the side like Paradigm's car.

They can mysteriously go walkabout and only pop off. I've seen this happen too many times to recommend buying a set and installing. Particularly if you have to park in certain areas.

Yeah, just seen your thread on e36coupe, it reminded me to actually make my first post there, i've only been a member for 5 months  :p

I'll start one in a couple of weeks. e36coupe is a great forum. I would suggest being careful what you post in your journal though (regarding insurance).

I would suggest because E36Coupe.com is the first port of call for any insurance investigator when a claim for a bent E36 lands on his desk.

I'd love a 328i but i'm shelling out over £150 a month on fuel @ 44mpg. A 328i would never get that.
I'm considering moving closer to work though lol

I think for what you get, they are a steal if you buy a well maintained one.

Why's that nick?

OT: was it today you were up this way?

As Fox says because of the insurance. Adrian Flux seem to have a presence on the board, so I'd imagine they do quite a bit of snooping. The journals are an easy way of sussing people out.

I'm heading up your way tomorrow evening till Sunday :)

Sadly, your right - I'm particularly pleased with my brief encounter with 28 MPG this week! :D

So far I've put fuel in the car once. Brimmed it when I picked it up. I've done just over 260miles and I still have half a tank left. WIN. :D

EDIT: That works out as roughly 40MPG. - I must have incorrect figures somewhere. :p

Your incorrectness comes from the highly inaccurate fuel gauge.

I assume you are not in possession of 18-button OBC then?

If not, get it retrofitted, its not that difficult ;)

You cant calculate fuel economy based on fuel remaining. Go and brim it now and that'll let you know how much it's used.

I don't want to mimic a crash whilst sat still. ;)

Thinking about it, I've probably used about 35litres, and the trip computer had ~15 miles when I brimmed it, so that's about 250 miles. Which over all works out at as 32MPG...which is more likely. :)

I need more than just he OBC though, which is a pain, as most people only sell the OBC, if they sell the wires and stuff instead of it being like £10 its £70.

I know, it was a complete hash figure because I was bored. :p

I've been driving like a saint to be honest.

I can't be bothered to edit this for this forum, so it's how I wrote it for e36coupe.com.

Right, an update.

I took the afternoon off work yesterday because it'll only take an afternoon to fit the brakes...

Well, it could take an afternoon if you didn't have two siezed bolts that rounded off and halfords had no rounded nut removal sockets for 16mm sockets.

Anyway, picture and time progress...

Got started on the car shortly after 3, took the wheels off, and put the car on stands.

We worked on a side each, to make it quicker. So we stripped off the calipers and took the pads out...

As you can see, the driver's side ones are shot, which I knew and is why I was replacing ASAP. :)

I then proceeded to take off the passenger side disc, which came off quite easily (once I realised I needed to remove the calliper holder :p). I then fitted one of the new discs whilst my mate was working on the other side, trying to get the calliper holder off.

After I'd done all that (but not fitted the calliper bits) my mate said he was having problems with the calliper holder bolts, they seemed to be trying to round using the short length of a normal socket. At this point we decided, right, nip into halfords, grab a breaker bar.
We got back with it, tried using it and rounded the heads properly. So, another trip to Halfords for rounded nut removal sockets, but they only had them for alloy locking nuts, at 19mm and 21mm and nothing at 16mm.

So we headed back and removed the new disc. The old ones aren't too bad, but could do with replacing, so we chucked the new pads on and put it all back together so I could get to work today and get somewhere to sort it as well. Halfords recommended KwickFit, to which I replied that I wouldn't let those monkeys touch my car.

Looks like I'm headed back home this weekend to my parent's place where I have use of a garage (no worry about running out of light), air tools, and loads of other tools, including all the removal tools and stuff I should need. :)

So which bolts are you having trouble with, just the caliper mount bolts?

Are your sockets 12 sided or 6 sided? Have you tried a spanner (I know, I know, spanner, but slide a decent pole over it and you'd have enough torque)?

Yeah it is the mount bolts on the back of the mount arm thing. Callipers came off fine, just the mount on the driver's side, which means the disc can't be removed (I tried :p).

Was using Ben's (-westy-) tools which are 12 unfortunately. Back home I have access to 6 sided sockets of all types.

Hmmm, I never had a problem with those bolts on mine, I had problems with bolt that holds the discs on, completely rounded those, had to dremel the old disc offf, fortunately there only there to hold the disc on whil getting wheel back on....sort of haha!

Is it the calliper carrier bolts, which are long and thin and need a alan key to tka eoff, which you are having a problem with?

Rob

Nah, the alankey ones are fine. It's the bolts that hold on the calliper on...

Back of the disc on that picture.

EDIT: The small screw that holds the disc on was seized on that wheel too, drilled it out though. Passenger side was fine.
