Nice one! :) Seems like you've got a pretty decent career there, moving up to assistant head next then head (I'm guessing you can then get more like 75 or so then)... and I guess if you're super ambitious you can go for one of the new academies, there are some super head positions earning six figures IIRC

Yeah I really cant complain. I would like to make AHT in the next year or so but feel like my age may count against me (I am yet to see an AHT as young as 30 in well established Outstanding schools). Probably need a few more years but being the "Tech Specialist" has its merits as I have been instrumental in bringing the school forward a number of years in terms of assessment/devices/infrastructure/forward thinking.

I don't think at this stage Headteacher or even Deputy Headteacher is appealing as its just too much time and you really need to be committed to the community (Current head is a governor at both local primary schools and 6th forms) but only time will tell. I would like to retire at 40 and live off a side business but that will also take time.

Next step for me would be an SLE post (Specialist Leader in Education) which will get me onto Leadership level then progress from there.

Unless I hack it all in for a job abroad....

Lots of teaching talent from my school has/is gone to the UAE for £megabucks (relative) and actual career prospects, sad really but that's life. Fair play to you and your achievements and good luck whatever you do :)

My biggest motivator at the moment, apart from taking care of my family, is property. I'm absolutely obsessed with it to the extent I spent ~1hr a day on rightmove fantasising about owning properties I can't (yet!) afford.

I can't decide whether this means my passion is property and that's where I should work, or if it means I need to work harder in my current career (finance business partner / accountancy) to afford these houses.

Either way, I'm fairly comfy in a big company with good opportunities and some exciting changes ahead in the industry I work in (energy).

I always want more though, but not such that it impacts the time I get to spend with my young family. Perhaps when the children are older, I'll give my life to a bank in Birmingham to afford that dream home.

Ha, I'm an accountant in the West Midlands and I'm doing the same as you, regularly checking RightMove etc. for the exact same reasons. Would enjoy having a small portfolio to work with.

Want to go into business? I've not idea with what, but I'm sure we can put our minds together! :)

I guess you have summer holidays to do background prep for a potential side business
Yeah that's always a potential particularly as I actually get to chill out now that I have done most of the hard work! Just need to decide on what to do now...

Yeah it's getting quite attractive there now in terms of £££! My only concern is if I go out there now, I may miss out on my chance becoming an AHT in this country which is a massive personal achievement for me. I guess we will see what happens over the year but I am tentatively flinging my CV around...

Also thanks :D sometimes I'm unaware of how much I have achieved until I write it down. Something that has actually pushed me to go for the next step.

You've got one obvious business in the form of ICT tuition... perhaps scalable if you turn it into an agency of sorts.

Exam prep business, summer courses etc.. would also seem like a natural thing you could offer, especially as "head of ICT department at XYZ school, rated excellent X years in a row..."

Yeah I've always wanted to do that and with my wife being a special needs teacher she has the skills to take lower ability and younger years.
Only problem is setting it up somewhere but definitely a starting point.

You could try things like local church halls, community centres etc... they might have rooms you could rent for ad hoc courses etc... at least when starting out.

(Though I guess if you require computer facilities for each student that maybe complicates things.)

Thanks for the pointers, definitely something to think about over the summer. Wife already tutors albeit at home so we have a good standing in the community. Just need to think about how to scale it...

Does the role involve purchasing? :D

Nah, that was just something I thought of at my current position.

Anywho, met the head honcho today, seems like a nice guy, but then I've seen him in photos with Bill Clinton so he's obviously fairly high up. They want to go for a drink next Thursday, never had that before but I'm game. I want this job so if I have to drink a beer to get it then so be it :D

Yeah why not. An idea with close to zero start-up capital required would be helpful :p.

How do you mix property and finance? Small accounting and advisory firm with in-house mortgage broker / advisor, servicing the fine businesses and business people of the West Midlands? Let me check my bank account...
