The absolute state of pubs these days

I bought a round of beers last night at €11.90 for per 500ml beer. High prices will be here to stay, the only question is, what's going to happen to wages. The government thinks we will be happy with lower lower standards compared to slightly higher inflation.
No one needs to drink beer at a pub though, so it’ll become a personal choice to pay it or not.

Seem to be a lot more people supplementing the booze with powder these days as well.

Is it a post COVID thing? Pub clientele have changed. Depends on the pub of course.

One thing we've been noticing at work is a lot of the younger generations have far less interest in drinking and some of them quite proud of the fact but drug use, especially weed, is much higher (even compared to my generation at that age) and kind of weird when they take pride in not drinking alcohol yet are frequent users of other substances.

Probably because alcohol is by a long way a more harmful drug.

The other substances tend to be healthier though. It is only that society has legalized a very damaging drug but keeps others illegal that warps ones senses

What a life to live though, we are sleep walking into a world without discretionary spending. We shall sit in silence in our cold houses and be grateful.
It has been unfolding for quite some time.

The Internet has allowed us to shop online, meet people online and work online. With less need to actually go outside, everything in real life becomes more expensive or closes, causing even more people to stay at home and live online.

Going outside and spending discretionary or enjoying real life will eventually- and not too far away - become a pastime of the more well off.

Yep but like I said if you value it then you’ll do it anyway. A single mother is worried about heating and be able to afford school shoes ect, having a pint is pretty low down on the priority list.

Of course, one factor we’ve not mentioned so far in the pub’s demise is the impact of unscrupulous pub company’s like Punch Taverns, and how their frankly, predatory, business practices are killing pubs left right and centre.

My friend who can’t drink alcohol for medical reasons, bought a J2O and was charged £3.55 for one.

I bought ten for £2 at post Christmas clearance as we only sell the packs of 10 at Christmas. We were selling them for £5.50

On the contrary, the outdoors has never been busier. People realised during lockdown that there are endless opportunities to get outdoors and do stuff that costs next to nothing. Certainly cheaper and more agreeable than poisoning yourself with alcohol.

Tbf I imagine the amount of whinging going on in your house is about comparable to a Wetherspoons at midday when the oldies rock up.

People are spoiled for choice at shops and supermarkets so the appeal of paying £6-7 for a pint of generic beer that will give you the runs brings no surprises people avoid pubs.

Once I connected the dots and realised hangovers and bad stomachs were from filthy draft beer and switched to bottles it got better. The romantic image is the traditional British pub is all we have as it’s all chains and huge businesses which all sell the same product. Whenever someone brings a good product out, it gets bought by the conglomerates and made worse (Camden brewery a great example).

Personally I applaud the younglings avoiding pubs and being more into wellness.

The main drawer of the boozers around me is family atmosphere and food tbh. One of the 4 or 5 pubs I have in walking distance does a kids roast for 6 quid, which is enormous. So that offsets a pint or two. But I've packed in drinking for a few weeks now and the thought of a dirty pint makes me feel pretty sick tbh.

Pubs have always been crazy expensive vs supermarkets. Now they are having to pay increasing wages and their costs have gone through the roof. Most pubs that don't rely mainly on food will die unless something happens.
