The absolute state of pubs these days

Tends to be £5.50ish a pint in Bristol.

What I’ve really gone off though is cocktails in bars. Or anything with a spirit in.

Bars seem to think that it’s reasonable to charge £8-10 for a gin and tonic. It is surely the worst value for money drink there is.

You can go out for ‘cocktails’, have 3 each and the bill comes to £80 (?!).

It’s very steep and poor value for money IMO.

When I’m out in a pub, I always get a draft beer. Spirits are for home plus more expensive.

On a few occasions I had a meal and drink deal and try a drink - for example I did this with Bombay Sapphire. As don’t want to waste £20 on gin which I may not like.

Non beer drinks abroad are more expensive in bars. Remember on holiday, my beer cost €4 in Latvia. A lady on my tour ordered a large glass of wine, gave the barman €10 and she said where’s her change. Wine is ten euro barman said.

Good job I drink a variety of drinks. Don’t drink Campari and cheap wines.

Tbf I imagine the amount of whinging going on in your house is about comparable to a Wetherspoons at midday when the oldies rock up.
There’s an old boy that visits the local Spoons at 8am for a pint. He leaves his mobility scooter outside with a padlock and chain over the seat. Like anyone would nick the scuffed scooter with seat’s padding coming away

So many alcohol free beverages available now. Those I know who don’t drink for various reasons- medical, religion, personal choice etc don’t drink this stuff.

Besides some of the alcohol free gin is more expensive than the proper gin!

Either drink the full strength stuff or drink soft drinks!

A lot of places are closing early because they simply can't afford to keep the lights on. Even that £7 pint probably isn't enough to pay their bills.
I remember when a pint was around 70p lol...

This....

Two more pubs near me closing down

That’s why those establishments are more and more common. Massive margin on cocktails.

The main draw of the boozers around me is the women.
Same.

People are spoiled for choice at shops and supermarkets so the appeal of paying £6-7 for a pint of generic beer that will give you the runs brings no surprises people avoid pubs.

Once I connected the dots and realised hangovers and bad stomachs were from filthy draft beer and switched to bottles it got better. The romantic image is the traditional British pub is all we have as it’s all chains and huge businesses which all sell the same product. Whenever someone brings a good product out, it gets bought by the conglomerates and made worse (Camden brewery a great example).

Personally I applaud the younglings avoiding pubs and being more into wellness.

Yea, that’s utter rubbish. It’s the same beer that goes into the keg and the bottle. You’re probably getting less worse hangovers because you’re drinking less.

The local Toby Carvery down from me is booming. Although they have changed the restaurant opening and closing times due to how quiet it is first thing at breakfast and the last 90 mins of the evening. The bar is always busy, I think there are only 3 Tobys that have a good bar trade, the rest are food based. Match days (Derby County, Pride park is literally 5 min walk across A52) are crazy busy, 6 deep at the bar for 2 hours before kickoff.

Think a bit deeper ... once the seal is broken on a keg the timer is started. If demand for that larger is poor you are getting the dregs out of the line, that could have been sitting for god knows how long. If the lines aren't cleaned regularly then they get full of bacteria.

The other substances tend to be healthier though. It is only that society has legalized a very damaging drug but keeps others illegal that warps ones senses
Yet a beer is probably healthier than the same amount of coke for example. I’d argue sugar is the most damaging drug..

Nothing wrong with my local Wetherspoons.

Two spoons pubs near me. Both really decent: good food, good beer, very cheap prices indeed. I was surprised at the one in Greenwich during the world cup, the food was actually nice - chicken katsu curry and two pints of beer for £11.

That's how it should be. The clientelle are meh but you can put up with them for those prices. Honestly it's worth it for the value you get.

A pint of Club Tropica pale ale in our nearby Fullers pub is £7.15. Let that sink in.

Clwb Tropica is a 5.5% pale ale from a specialist hipster brewery [Tiny Rebel], so I'm not really surprised. It's when dog**** 4% ales like Doom Bar [literally no flavour] are £6 when they start taking the mick.

That said, I was in a pub in Elephant & Castle the other day which did an amazing 3.8% ale called Volden Session [I kid you not, it is stunning for 3.8%] for £3.30. I had several of those.

It’s not bacteria which causes hangovers though.

I'm well aware of what it is and the brewery, my shock was that it's selling for that. Even Beavertown haven't exceeded £7 in that pub (yet).

My local opposite my house is £3.80 for Carling / £5 Stella / £5.20 for peroni. These prices are crazy for essentially fizzy water with hops.

It also sometimes closes at 830pm now and they turn away people walking into the pub. News years eve it closed at 9pm. Presumably to save on energy.

Luckily there is a spoons 15 minutes walk away where I can get ruddles ale for £1.59 / carlsberg for £2.29 and this pub is packed every single night

Ah ok. Yeah, I was told last night in one pub that a pint of Neck Oil from Beavertown is £7.10. Neck Oil. A paltry, watery-thin 4.3% pale ale. Not worth it at half the price.
