The Air Rifles & Pistols thread

Only real way to check the power is to fire a pellet through a chronograph and then you can work it out.

Your local gun shop (if you can find one) should be able to help you out.

I bet that costs a bit. What sort of time frame does it take from shot to hit (noise) from about 50 ft? (I know it's not vastly scientific but may be a bit of a pointer). Instant?

EDIT: Ah cool, although the old local (if you can call a half hour drive local) shop has now shut down, but I'm sure I can find another one. Would they be likely to have a chronograph or it a special piece of kit that not many would have?

I used to shoot Field Target a lot as a teenager, and these pics bring back some great memories :(

I am tempted to look around the area and see if there are any local clubs - I've been missing it recently.

You won't get an S200 or a S400 for £300.

You'd be looking at about £410 for a S200 kit, S400 kit is closer to £450+.

Or, if you are like me, and a lefty, you need to pay for a walnut stock to get it in left handed! grrrr

i got mine (pictured on page 2, with bag and 500 pellets for £210? it was from my Gf's dad though :)

some of them these days wont give you it back if it fires over 12lbs/ft, remember to ask that before you hand anything over.

Pic of an Orion please so I can have a quick cry over what was lost. :(

lots of info
Thanks a load for your advice, it's appreciated. It seems that .177 would suit me better as I'm not really planning to do much hunting if at all, more interested in targets or "plinking" but have nothing against shooting little fluffy animals.

I've checked out the link and it's most helpful.

Very nice TheOtherOption . Love that stock, looks like a nice bit of walnut, much better then the thumb hole stock they came/come with.

Cheers - am actually looking to stain it properly as the finish it came with is getting dry as mentioned before - bought a kit that I think should do the job of BAR - will see if it turns up tomorrow!

It has been great fun - seeing it punch through a keg full of beer was awesome fun - for something you don't need a license to use that's a lot of power :)

Can anyone go and do Hunter field target? I'm tempted to go along with my HW97 and see how i do.

My local club - I had to go along twice on a Sunday morning, was taken round by someone and allowed to shoot the 30 target course using a club gun. I think this is basically to check that a) I'm not a psychopath and b) I am safe with a gun. Once I'd been twice, I just paid my joining fee, and can now pop along anytime - weekdays it is self-setting targets, weekends they put the proper HFT knockdown targets out.

Well, I've gone and bought a Hawke Map Pro 4-16x50 AO + mounts which should be delivered in the next week or so and will get a CZ Slavia 634 .177 from a shop in town during the week.
I'll post pics once I have it all squared away :)

I had an awesome spring powered pistol but i sold it :(. It was a HW45 and was spot on the legal limit for air pistols.

As you said - It really is the Daddy of Legal Air pistols.

Fantastic to look at, shoot and hold. I have yet to see an air pistol that is constructed with such precision - and that baby there still shoots as well even after 20 years.

Is it wrong that when people keep mentioning their air pistols that I come back with an "I've got one" comment?

Guess who's got an HW45 in the cabinet? :D It only gets used occasionally for the Hunter Pistol matches but it's a great gun.

Had a crossman ratcatcher a few years back. Was a nice gun till the stock came loose.
I ended up selling it as I had trouble finding land to shoot on, as my back gardens only small :(. Anyone shoot on much land? and how did you go about getting permission?
