*** The all new Apple iPad thread - Keep all iPad stuff in here ***

Which one you going for?

And has he seen the stock situation? For example I know there were none (of any type) in Philadelphia yesterday!

I've asked for him to get a 64GB 3G, or a 64GB Wi-Fi if the 3G is sold out.

I'm happy to wait if he comes back unsuccessful, but it's worth a punt for the saving.

Can't wait to get my hands on one ;)

Are you going for a DodoCase? Jeaaaalous! Really want one and it looks much better than the other cases I've seen so far.

If you are, see if you have to pay $25 per case shipping wise, as if theres a joint discount you know what I'm gonna ask ;)

Was going to get an invisible shield over a neoprene case as I hated unzipping all the time to get my macbook pro out. But something like that Dodo makes it much easier as it's more book-like. Need to find one that is slimmer than the huge things I've seen so far on sale in UK!

Hmm wireless keyboard or keyboard dock or neither?! the only reason it so I can for msn/facebook chat when I'm gaming instead of tabbing out, even if I have a second monitor! Also it can be a bit more like a squeezebox with the line out hooked up to my speakers.

Hmm why wount it let me buy the micro-sim for 02 and Orange???
I'm undecided so I want both!!!

Not sure to go with Orange or 02....

- 32Gb 3G (god knows if i'll ever need 3G mind but...)
- Case

£629

Thats a lot of money and i can get a descent spec lappy with that. Must make my mind up soon though......

Its a great app. Use it on my iTouch.
It says you can use it through 3G. i used my phone to make a wi-fi connection through its 3g and it was way to slow (didn't even show the movies)

But on my home wireless its great :D

Works fine over 3G to my iPhone 3G! Air Video is a brilliant app.

As for the iPad. I'll be getting a either a 16GB or 32GB one when I can walk into the Apple Reseller here in Derby and walk out with one...

What is this Airvideo app? And whats this dodocase? is it anygood? doesnt look very sturdy to me?

Air Video allows transcoding of videos across a local network or 3G.

Essentially, if you have a load of videos that aren't apple compatible, it'll play them with on-the-fly conversion, so you don't spend hours re-encoding your videos just for the iPhone/iPad.

I was watching Ace Ventura: Pet Detective last night, just because it's stored on my Drobo Pro and I had the choice. There's no way I'd have bothered with it if I had to re-encode the movie. Good lulz.

As for the Dodo case.. if anyone wants to go in a pot and order together, I'd be up for that (to save shipping) :)

What's involved recoding divx files you already have? Does iTunes do any of the work or is it a case of using an encoding bit of software then dropping it to the ipad?

I see! But...

1. Doesnt transcoding take it out of your rig?
2. What about buffer times?
3. And screen res for that matter?
4. You mentioned 3G, does it create a server or something you can access via 3G? Surely bitrate would have to be reduced for 3G?
5. Also about the Dodocase, I maybe in for a bit of that if more people are, but do we get hit for duty/customs tax?

It's possible. You'd need to use Handbrake to do a batch encode of every video you want to sync, then drop those new files in iTunes.

I have 6TB of movies and TV Shows :p

1 - Yeah. My Mac Mini can transcode 1080p but the CPU usage is pretty much maxed.
2 - It takes 30 seconds on buffering before the video plays.
3 - You can specify the screen size (iPhone is 320 x 480), not tested it on iPad but I've heard good things.
4 - I've not tried this personally.
5 - I'll make another thread if we get 3 or more people. I can't imagine duty is much on $50 x 3.
