*** The all new Apple iPad thread - Keep all iPad stuff in here ***

I've just read somewhere that apparently the UK iPad App Store isn't live yet so you cannot download apps straight to an iPad, you need to use iTunes to download and then sync the apps.

This doesn't bother me as long as it all works happily after the UK launch :)

I had to make a US iTunes account to download the apps from the US store, however you need a bank card with a US address to buy them. Not tried anything on iTunes just the iPad AppStore.

Mine has just arrived courtesy of a local eBay seller (they dropped it off this Sunday morning!)

Waiting until the UK iPad App Store opens before purchasing any apps, but there are loads of free USapps to play with for now, including the BBC News App (US only apparantly).

Some thoughts:
- The pixel density is a tad low. Not a huge deal though.
- Apart from the low pixel density the screen is amazing. Bright and viewable from all angles. iBooks is very life-like, almost appears 3D.
- Typing in landscape mode is amazing. Just as fast as using a real keyboard. I'm very impressed and can easily see me bashing out lengthy emails in no time.
- It feels wonderful. Expensive too. A nice weight to it and just the right size.
- The screen gets covered in smudges and grease. Just like my iPhone I guess.
- Needs a cover or case, the back will scratch easily. I'm looking at this one.
- It really does feel like a game-changing device. Makes my iPhone look like a piece of crap.

Theres a guy on eBay selling them for $689 with shipping to UK and I know 2 people who have bought from him. Thats about £430 for the basic model which is a good price, probably £30 more than UK price will be at the best!

Very nice. If you don't mind me asking how much? Feel free to tell me to mind my own business.

Lol, that's alright :)
I paid £485 for the 16GB model. Probably a lot more than it'll cost in the UK, but I knew I could have it in my hands within hours (purchased last night from a local seller and had it this morning) and that was too tempting. He'd bought six whilst on holiday in the States so wasn't stung by import taxes.

It seems the iPad cannot as yet output 720P to a Plasma/LCD via Component.

It can only do 480P/576P, which is DVD quality.

It can play certain files @ 720P via VGA, but not if you bought 720P content via iTunes.

I still wont buy into this, I still think all of you are best served putting £400 into a macbook pro, the iPad just doesnt do enough to warrant that kind of price tag, apart from iWork apps it actually does less than the iPhone just on a bigger screen, the word mugs comes to mind

Very nice dienamite ;) i really do love the look of these however for me its just not feasible. The size of it is too big for what i do so i may give the new iphone a look if i ever need more from my 3GS (unlikely anytime soon).

So the touchscreen and components don't cost more than a laptop, as well as the fact that due to it's form it is not going up against laptops which can't be used in the same circumstances. People are paying for the form, more than anything else, and there is nothing wrong with that and certainly not mugs. Just because you have no use, doesn't mean others don't. What's the point of x-number of other functions when you wont use any of those functions.

**** it I'm gettin one, I can afford it so wth :D

you *****

I'm going to have to wait till July for bonus and that's only if I **** up an interview, otherwise it's back to uni for a year with bot enough money to live on.

The only real downside was flash, but as shown big websites (bbc, youtube) just make an app).
Looks like the most amazing couch surfer, magazine.book reader and for train and other journeys.

I am increasingly suspecting this month will end with an ipad shaped hole in my bank account. As justification I'm hoping to offset the £50+ a month I spend on newspapers and magazines who make their content available for free online just so I don't have to read it on my laptop...

If the rumour that no preorders will be accepted by Apple Stores turns out to be true, along with the limited stock rumour, it's going to be a fun game of Russian Roulette, for those of us who don't have a local store. I think Milton Keynes is my nearest one and shall be there at opening on release day.

I am not going to be acting like some of those American's in the various Youtube videos from the other weekend :D
