nod32 v MSE

what's people views, my nod32 licence just expired, and dunno if to pay £50 odd quid to cover the 5 pc's in my house, when MSE is free..

be interested in thoughts chaps

sometimes you have SYMANTEC NORTON INTERNET SECURITY 2012 2years 3PC's on ebay for cheap as 20-25€.

I just got an email today saying that my Norton 360 subscription had been renewed at £64.99  I've paid that in the previous 2 years but I'm trying to be a bit more savvy with my money these days.

I've checked and seen that subscriptions done through the automatic renewal process can be cancelled and refunded within 60 days of purchase. So would that be a wise decision? I'm guessing so by the amount of people using free software.

Microsoft Security Essentials

Folks,

I chanced on knowing this 'solution'.

There aren't too many threads up here about MSE, is it sufficient for protecting my hard drives? Also, if there are 2 hard drives, does it also protect the D drive?

I am on a tight budget condition, so if I can save the money for license renewal that would be very good to me.

Thanks

Many will say it is good, I disagree. My brother got infected with Thinkpoint using it & had to use Malwarebytes to remove it. A lot of malware spoof the pop ups that MSE has.
For free try Comodo, as good or better than a lot of paid for solutions & a lot better than MSE.
Try Comodo Dragon browser based on Chrome it caan use Comodo DNS servers which blocks malware & phishing sites.

There are better & cheaper paid versions: Bitdefender, ESET, Kaspersky.
Comodo is good & free - you could use Panda cloud as a backup scanner, also free, as are many online scanners.

There are quite a few threads about MSE and also a really big one stickied which reads...

although it seems some do not see it :D

...regardless of your Anti Virus software it will not be complete enough, imo, to cover all types of virus's and malware. You should consider a layered approach. I use MSE and also manually scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and I have a firewall in place as well.

For me the combination of the above, and a bit of common sense, has stood me well in my Internet usage.

Any suspect files get checked here first...

and or get ran sandboxed

norton is chud and dor £64! wow no chance

Agree with Vimes
AV alone won't protect you.
With MSE you have to rely on windows firewall which in Win7 is better but doesn't block outgoing data. Comodo firewall is v good, Zone alarm has lost its edge but there is also a free version. Online armor is reckoned to be the best stand alone firewall & the ++ version you have to pay for but comes with AV. Win defender has improved but lacks the firepower of others.
As well as Malwarebytes (free) I use Hitman Pro (30 day free trial) & superantispyware ( got a deal on a lifetime license) for realtime protection.
Recently installed PC Doctor from Kingsoft has realtime portection, recommended by Languy99, is free & doesn't conflict with what I have ESET SS5 or Comodo.
Virus Total have a plugin for Firefox & chrome to easily scan a website or submit a suspicious file.
You can check files here also http://valkyrie.comodo.com/Default.aspx

Looks like I may very well need to pay for a license, Trend Micro could be a choice?

But what I really don't want is the slowing down of the entire system after installing a AV program.

So far, Mcafee seems to be champion in that aspect.

Gentlemen what are your recommendations?

I really like one without a AV program because everything is so primitively fast. But then I don't want to go back to the Deep Freeze era now with Windows 7 in place...

Why do you need to pay for a license  Unless you're completely devoid of common sense then one of the decent free options available (eg Avast, AVG, MSE etc) coupled with a scan using malwarebytes every week or so should be more than sufficient for any home user.

I uploaded a trojan which is discoverable by Trend Micro and Mcafee as such shown in the above link.

According to the report above, Avast, AVG and MSE don't discover it.

The thing is another Trojan may be detected by Avast but not by Trend Micro or Mcafee. There's not an anti-virus available in the world that's completely infallible! Like I said in my previous post the end user must posess a modicum of common sense when it comes to surfing the net. If you're somebody that cannot help but open dodgy looking attachments from email addresses you don't know or are constantly on the look out for horse porn then sure you're going to have issues, probably sooner rather than later ;)

Thanks, I ended up reading through the whole 16 pages of this thread and went with MSE as my AV but I'm also going to run Malwarebytes weekly and Spybot search and destroy as well. But I'm considering removing Spybot, as these are on my low spec laptop and I feel this may be using up much needed resources.
