Just now I was Googling for methods to block LAN users temporarily and came across a post on http://www.ihav.net where someone asked the same question, loading the thread caused MSE to pop up saying it detected a threat and it had stopped and quarantined it.

Turns out the thread had some java exploit code in it which MSE saw and stopped. Clicking the more info link in MSE shows that the exploit was very new still, only got added on the 8th Feb.

Nice to know MSE's heuristics engine is useful :p

I use Waterfox 10 btw and all plugins etc are up to date.

Security Essentials Version: 4.0.1113.0
Antimalware Client Version: 4.0.1113.0
Engine Version: 1.1.8001.0

I did have 4 beta but it updated itself to the version above which doesn't bear any BETA markings some weeks ago.

Is Microsoft Security Essentials really any good?! I remember trying the Windows One or whatever virus protection when it first came out and it sucked.

NOD32 seems to be having a funny half hour today. It's tried to update but the program claims the update is not digitally signed. First time I've ever seen that. I declined the update just in case but now I've got a yellow exclamation mark in my tray that is bugging me. :D

If you run avast and google chrome, the latest update will install chrome again (without asking you) and break your install. Thankfully, I was able to restore the chrome appdata folder to previous version after reinstalling chrome, but make a copy of it before you update avast peeps

My NOD32 needs renewing again in a few days. Renewal seems pretty pricey this time. Might finally just get rid and use MSE instead, been running it on a laptop with no issues for ages now.

I always take a look at http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/rap-index.xml to decide
[It updates monthly]
Anything over 90% 90% is worth keeping and installing & continue paying for

Anything below 80% 80% is worth the removal
(You might as well class your pc as a Infection playground an just install the virus your self )

These days I unplug my HDD SATA Cable and use a LiveCD/DVD (Customised + Flash + Java) if going to untrusted sties Or use a VM using Linux

Erm and how often do you visit these "untrusted" sites and how untrusted must they be based on the contents you're viewing that requires such antics?

To put it simply but will use as a example
If I never been or used facebook before then poor facebook and other countless unvisited sites WILL get the overkill hash treatment.

I also begin blocking all there 3rd party advertisers/trackers... urls & ips too

Hey,

Just going for a major wipe and re-install due to my machine running incredibly slow and, I think, not having upgraded my security a while back is now causing me problems.... random loading web pages.

Can someone please advise me what sort of AV would suit me best.

I surf a lot...... I'm gonna man up and say there are some sites there where perhaps I shouldn't be going :o and I also torrent a fair bit too.........

Is a standard freebee good enough? and if so, which one? If not, what should I be looking at and with what cover?

Thanks

Regards

Lee

Thanks for the link, I was thinking of changing my AV from AVG to MSE but wont bother now as I see I am (slightly) better off looking elsewhere. 'Avira Free' looks promising - is it worth trying over AVG?

Anyone suing Bitdefender? Seems to get good detection rates and some decent reviews and it looks like PCPro has the paid for version free this month.

**Edit** using.... USING..... Stupid fingers and keyboard!!! :)
