lol I have become a little too preoccupied with security lately. I've even gone through the effort of encrypting my OS/storage drive, bolting the pc and setting up an IP camera etc :o

I really shouldnt watch documentaries anymore :o

.. Need to learn about hardware firewalls and set one of them up next :D

I would love to have a VPN and hardware firewalls, encrypted storage drives, IP camera's and such, but I am simply too lazy to set that stuff up. I used to have crazy good security, but I have no need for it anymore, so I just have a light security setup. Avast and Malwarebytes.

Avira Free (XP) and MSE (Vista/7) for real-time security. MalwareBytes for specific scans.

I had a system in that was running the latest version of AVG. My god, what a dire piece of sotware that is now. I remember the days when I used and recommended it. Now it just slows everything down needlessly.

Avast is the same, although not quite to the same extent as AVG.

It's a valid point. I think the odd AV thread every now and again despite the sticky being there doesn't do any harm.

At the time that sticky was made the situation was out of control. Ironically, new thread starters are the ones who get spammed now by us linking to the the pre existing thread. I'm not sure which is worse.

Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit BETA removes the latest nastiest rootkits and repairs the damage they cause.

Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit BETA is cutting edge technology for detecting and removing the nastiest malicious rootkits.

it doesnt work for me keep getting error

Administrative account is required to run this program please switch to a user account etc

Been using Avira Free for years but have finally got sick of the adverts it pops up. 2012 version was fine, like twice a day pop up. The 2013 version gets updated 12million times a day and there is a popup on screen every sodding hour.

Gone to MSE for simplicity sake.

"Best" is subjective, some people like being told xyz happened, others like not being and instead let it get on with it.

Install MSE, enjoy gaming.

Avast is nasty bloatware. Users are forced to register to use a "free" product, after declining yet another paid Avast upgrade offer. MSE is simple, lightweight & non-intrusive.

And not so hot at viruses :p

Reminds me of this:
