Which doesn't mean much if the protection is crap, MSE scored really badly in 0 day protection, which is the protection you want the most, where's Avast scored very highly.

In the real world, all A/V protection is crap, which is why we have a huge malware problem. If anything, these anti-virus tests mislead ignorant consumers and as a result, they don't pay attention to the real cause of infection, vulnerable software.

It's trivial to bypass any up-to-date "protection" by obfuscating code. While I do recommend MSE to my clients, I always tell them the best protection comes from keeping critical software patched.

Then you are doing them a disservice, since Microsoft have been known to omit/delay provision of current virus definitions to avoid cannibalising their paid-for products.

A random post on a forum is proof? ROFL.

Proof is relative. A different burden of proof is required to choose between free antivirus software than to decide whether to go to war. Combine that with the objective evidence that MSE offers poor protection and I'm very happy with the level of proof.

Of course, if you choose to stick your head in the sand then that's your business, it's just a shame you're dishing out poor recommendations, especially in a professional capacity where people are paying good money for what they expect will be your expertise.

MSE is a product aimed at consumers. MS doesn't have a premium AV suite that is aimed at consumers. Small businesses are allowed up to 10 PCs for free. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/mssmallbiz/...able-free-to-small-businesses-in-october.aspx

Now, some of you may ask whether Microsoft Forefront Client Security is a better security solution for your business. Well, that depends… If you want virus and malware protection to be centrally administered and integrated with group policy settings, then Forefront is a better option for you.

Makes perfect sense.

99% of my clients remain free of infection after I've done my bit, which is way more than just installing a silly AV client. If I had my head stuck in the sand, I would spend all my time comparing AV products at av-test, not bothering to go the extra mile to prevent reinfection.

We seem to have drifted slightly off topic. I'm not saying there aren't other ways to help protect computers from malware. I'm just saying MSE is overrated.

Big fan of ESet ever since I moved to it from Symantec about 4yrs ago. So happy that I buy a 3 computer license and renew it for 3yrs each time.
It has a small footprint and has never let me down.

I don't however use it with any dillusion that it alone makes online life safer. I use it as an added tool and it does what I'd expect it to.
