Avast is approximately 2,567,986 times better than Microsoft Security Essentials. (yes that is a large exaggeration, Avast is a bit better) According to my own biased opinion, to many tests and comparisons available to view online, as well as the number of virus definitions both have. Avast free is better than some paid for programs.

I went from Norton 360 Gold to Avast! Free edition. Avast seems infinitely better. In fact it unearthed some viruses that Norton had failed to spot.

Both Avast and AVG (corporate versions), have missed pretty old viruses on our network at work. Avast was certainly an improvement to AVG, but I'm not keen on the management console.
To be honest, I was most impressed with the Kaspersky Corporate trial we had. Unfortunately, it was more expensive and we couldn't get management to purchase it.

I started this thread because I wanted to know what people think now, and asked more specific questions. I don't think trawling through tonnes of replies on a massive thread that was started years ago is how a forum should be used.

It's a valid point. I think the odd AV thread every now and again despite the sticky being there doesn't do any harm.

At the time that sticky was made the situation was out of control. Ironically, new thread starters are the ones who get spammed now by us linking to the the pre existing thread. I'm not sure which is worse.

Having tried and tested loads of free ones and paid for ones I now use two free ones. MSE & Comodo Free Firewall.

I don't tend to go to dodgy sites or download anything I do not know, but the combo is unobtrusive, free, and seems to work very well. Far better than my last paid for all-in-one (Panda).
