thanks for the responses. even with modules disabled, kaspersky for example wanted to scan internet, causing lagginess in multiplayer p2p flash games for example... avs just seem determined to do things even when told not to, and i'm not a fan of that. 3570k, 8gb btw - not yet garbage i hope. i just want a nice scanner to scan without bloating my system, and i don't see why that's an unusual or unreasonable desire.

ps i did mean unobtrusive, not unINtrusive -.-

if you dont want it bloating you're system and you only going to be using it every few months then use an online scanner then you wont even need to install it.

thanks i used to use bitdefender and pandascan online ones, and they used to run for hours. now they seem to last 1 minute and not do much. will try some of the others

Kaspersky AV for me. I managed to get it for £20 as a student deal that they were doing.

I did have MSE for a while, but it was a bit frustrating not being able to turn it off completely. Might have to try this NOD32 when my Kaspersky License runs out next year, unless they plan on giving me a tempting offer to buy it again.

What security software are you using with windows 8 ?

Personally I am using the built in windows defender along with malwarebytes pro and superantispyware.

Seems to be working nicely.

What security and antivirus do you use?

What security and antivirus do you use and what are your thoughts on it?

Free, paid for, ISP provided, or 'other'?

Why do you use that/those programs?

Have you had any bad experiences with the program in the past (not protecting your computer from a virus which damaged it perhaps)?

If not, what security/antivirus programs have you had bad experiences with in the past?

I personally use Avast Free and Malwarebytes.

I'm on Windows 8 so nothing but Windows Defender (which is built in). For W7 or below, I generally use MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials). At work we unfortunately use aVAST.

Avast is approximately 2,567,986 times better than Microsoft Security Essentials. (yes that is a large exaggeration, Avast is a bit better) According to my own biased opinion, to many tests and comparisons available to view online, as well as the number of virus definitions both have. Avast free is better than some paid for programs.

I went from Norton 360 Gold to Avast! Free edition. Avast seems infinitely better. In fact it unearthed some viruses that Norton had failed to spot.
