Avast 8 Beta 3 version now available,http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=115105.0, compatible with Win8.

avast! 8 Public beta3
« on: Yesterday at 04:38:14 PM »
Hi all!

avast! 8 public beta 3 is now ready! The build number is 8.0.1478. A few things to point out:

You'll immediately notice the new GUI. We are excited to hear your feedback
The Software Updater is a new tool for helping you keep apps up to date. Give it a try :-)

There is a new product tier called Premier, it includes 3 new features:
• Data Shredder for wiping files, drives, and partitions
• Software Updater in autoupdate mode
• AccessAnywhere for remotely connecting to your PC no matter where you are

There is also a Browser Cleanup tool; it's a great utility for getting rid of invasive toolbars.
In addition, avast! Ad Blocker is introduced; this feature allows you to block ads, simple but nice :-)

Other improvements have been made to our FileRep and WebRep to help keep identify new threats in near real-time.
And finally, our Streaming Updates make sure you have the lastes virus definitions.

We hope you will find avast! 8 to be a great product and we sincerely appreciate you taking part in the beta and sharing
your feedback with us. Please use our new https://feedback.avast.com (click 'Login', then 'Single Sign-On' and you'll be
logged in automagically if you are already logged in the forum or you'll be asked for your forum credentials).

avast is giving me loads of BSODs when i try to play any sort of a game after the latest win8 update on my laptop. The issue is well known and happening to loads of people so hopefully an update will come soon.

In case it doesn't then could someone recommend me a new free AV for this laptop because, quite frankly, i'm fed up with this and dont want to trawl the internet for the nation's favorite AVs

(to be honest, the solution of 'downgrading' to win7pro is looking nicer and nicer since i can get it for free)

Avast 8 is still beta, however I would recommend Panda Cloud Free or AVG 2013 Free ,both I have tried in Win8 for days/weeks and had no issues.

Btw you do know Win8 has anti-virus built in ie Defender, so if you do go third party AV then disable real time scan on Defender.

I can't for the life of me figure out why someone paying 100s of £s for a PC is reluctant to pay less than £30quid more for a app to look after it.

Good consumer-grade security is always free. Paying for something doesn't mean it'll be any better than freeware.

Maybe I'm kind of old fashioned, but to me the tick boxes say it all.

Sandbox: Google Chrome
Firewall: Windows Firewall
Anti-spam: Gmail

Google DNS & Google Chrome filter out known malware & phishing sites. All free.

OK. For donkeys years I have used Nod32

When I upgraded to W8 I thought as many here have suggested to give Windows Defender a go.

Since only using Defender I keep getting ... Adware:Win32/FastSaveApp

and cannot get rid of it. Even a combination of Defender/Malwarebytes ... does not remove it. Within a short space of time it is back.

Thinking of going back to nod32 if this is not sorted.

I dunno if this is typical of all modern day AV but I use KIS well actually it's no Kaspersky one which is a variant of KIS 2012.

One of the big pluses for me, you easily set it up so no Forum Ad banners show, it blocks the lot without any tricky input from me, a couple of clicks is all it needs to block them, or to un-block them, if the need must which occasionally it does.

I wonder if Kaspersky are aware of the acronym

Keep
It
Simple
Stup.. Nah I'll not go any further

At my age, simple is the way forward to me. :D

Thanks for the info, I'll head over to AVG.

I have heard that windows 8 has its own AV, but reading around the internet told me that a lot of companies turn it off in such a way that its a royal pain in the bum to get it working again, which i think is what has happened on this PC because i followed all the guides to get windows defender turned on and this computer was having none of it (i forget the errors i got last week, but i wasnt in the mood to fix it, it could have been me being a noob with win8 since i've only had this horrid OS for a few days). Because of that i figured just bolting something else on would be much easier

I'm trying out Avast 8 RC2 at the moment on Win8 ,very stable no issues, great thing about it is how little memory resources its using ie between 5mb and 8mb,lol well low ,think AVG was using about 27mb.

Well I have now had Nod32 back on my system for a few days now and all adware problems have disappeared.

I am afraid as much as I wanted it Windows Defender just does not "cut the mustard".

Back to a 3rd party AV for me.
