I've used KIS 2009 to 2010 for last few years, it's been pretty damn good, however, recently it's been acting weird. When loading my usual apps like Firefox and Outlook, the KIS icon seems to be active and it seems to be scanning them more thoroughly than usual, and you can appreciate I cant add my browser and email client to the exceptions list lol

But my main bug bear with it is, normally when downloading exe's or zip files from places like Microsoft or SoftPedia or Download.com etc, the files would download fine, but suddenly the "save/open file" would take an absolute dawn to open and often timed out, and it turns out it was KIS interfering. If you right click KIS, pause protection and try download the same file, wham bham it was going as per usual. The tech guys on the forum just pass it off as not an issue and blame the setup as per usual

Removed KIS2010 and put the 30 day trial of Eset Smart Security on to see how it copes, doing really well so far, admittidly havent used NOD32 for many many years but still seems as good as before, just a shame it's one of the most expensive out there and i dont know any banks that give this bad boy out for free with online banking lol

Hi guys, if I can just get your thoughts on this please.

On my previous PC the security software I have on there is: Adaware, A-Squared Free, Spyware Blaster and NOD32 antivirus.

I have just took delivery of my new Dell PC. McAfee comes as standard with the PC. Having never used Mcafee before and having no knowledge of McAfee would you advise I keep McAfee security centre on the PC or get rid of McAfee and install the programs I had on my old PC.

I guess what I am wanting to know most of all is which gives most security on the PC.

Cheers guys.

Mc'Afee

Hi my sony laptop came with but soon dumped it for KIS 09.I didn't like it as always trying to take it over and telling me what to do! but some user's like it?
Friend reccons it used to be good but as usual they lose thier way and get bloated etc. Check on some sites put a search in for best AV etc and see what comes back? i did that and was on a few sites that give you a run down on them all before i got my new AV and Mc Afee didn't do to well with detections etc.
I'l try and find the site

I'd say out of all the AV's I've used MSE is the best... Still wonder why NONE of the AV's out there are able to stop these nasty ransomware virus's getting on people's machines..
That's because those kinds of malware change every day and the anti-virus providers just can't keep up with the changes (which is why you should have a layered defence including MBAM since that has the most success in keeping these things out of any computer).
Is AVG still pants?

A Friend seems to think its the best AV out there...... :/

AVG is pants end of as it can't detect a virus even if it had a t-shirt on with "I'm a virus" printed on it (and I think your friend needs a reality check)

lol, well i tried to tell him. Me i use Eset. Before that Kaspersky. Both v good IMO.

I guess some people you just cant tell, Stubborn they are. :)

I dont use an anti-virus. I dont download dodgey files so a firewall suits me fine. If I was to recommend any it would be Avast Home, Avira Premium, Kapersky Internet and ESET Smart.

whats the best one for a netbook chaps

Define 'best'? For a balance of good detection rate coupled with speed and lightness I'd say either Avira or Avast. Take your pick between free and paid editions but they're both very light and both good at detection.

MSE is pants, I'm sick of saying it but it's true. Detection is poor, and MS don't give a flying whether or not it works. I've already posted several times the response I got back from MS when their MSE missed a well-known and nasty trojan. Their reply was basically "Well our paid-for enterprise suite detects it. If you're using free stuff, then tough." :o

Kaspersky is brilliant but too heavy for a netbook imho.

I've been using MSE since last year and is effective. Better than Avira and McAfee which I used before. MSE seems to use next to no resources compared to the two aforementioned AV products.

Install MSE on PC and both laptops, noticed a difference straight away thanks :)

Decided having spent all my life using AVG Free I'll jump ship to MSE and see what all the fuss is about :p

NOD 32 on all my home PC's - been that way for years. It is very ubiquitous and not much of a resource hog (although the startup scan can be a pain when using netbooks).

I use MSE at work (they are too tight to pay for AV) and I dont really rate it tbh. It seems very resource hungry and the updating lags my work machine. But maybe I just have high standards after using NOD for so long :p

In terms of free use, I'd highly recommend trying out Panda Cloud and as long as you have Windows 7 an maybe Vista just use their Firewalls.

If you have XP then a 3rd party firewall is a must.
