Just uninstalled bit-defender and requested a refund through the 30day refund policy.

It was causing blue screen errors on a pc that had never had them before.. crashing to black screen during games and other odd behaviour. I didn't really think it was the bit defender and was trying other solutions until I removed it and lo and behold it all went back to normal!

Oh well back to MSE I guess

Perfect solution as long as it is combined with software patching and sensible behaviour.

You might want to rethink that; even Microsoft now seem to be admitting that MSE is just designed for "baseline" protection (whatever that's supposed to mean), and that third-party solutions provide better results: http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/securit...signed-to-be-bottom-of-the-antivirus-rankings

What a load of crap. IIRC MSE uses the same engine as their enterprise solution. And most AV makers would say its better to have more than 1 security software installed, like MSE and malwarebytes.

*shrug*

Don't shoot the messenger, Microsoft's own words (or at least those of the "senior program manager of the Microsoft Malware Protection Center"), not mine.

As long as you are fairly tech savvy, then MSE and common sense should be absolutely fine. I haven't had a virus or any malware on my PC for years. I run Spybot every now and then, but it hasn't found anything for ages.

http://www.av-test.org/en/tests/home-user/windows-7/julaug-2013/ AVTEST for example, end of the day there ARE better free alternatives,MSE strengths however are its simple and lightweight and a lot of users are fine with that.

Personally I use my hardware firewall via router and Avast 2014 RC3 with Malwarebytes free version plus Windows software firewall as well with UAC enabled.

av-test is incredibly misleading and tends to sucker in naive folks into believing the silly figures, such as 100% protection against 0day and random samples found in the wild. Take it with a pinch of salt.

No AV is perfect however some are better then others,my point being it depends what you want,if you want the best protection stat wise then Kaspersky/Bitdefender paid are probably the best option, however AVG/Avast/Avira free versions do offer better stats and protection then MSE.

Will microsoft defender work ok with AVG anti virus?

Will microsoft defender work ok with AVG anti virus?

Instead of using AVG anti virus is ok to just use microsoft defender on it own?

Also-what's the best program to use for malware?

Defender is ok, nothing more or nothing less than ok.

Malwarebytes is highly praised for spyware and the like. Spywareblaster is worth a look too as it blocks websites which nasties are associated with.

Common sense is the best antivirus though, avoid dodgy websites and you should be ok (I know that very rarely you can pick up stuff from legit sites).

Keeping java (if installed) and flash player up to date is a must too.

Which version of Windows?

Defender should be disabled on Win7 if you have a 3rd-party AV installed. Ideally, you should install the full version of Security Essentials.
On Win8, ditch AVG and keep the full version of Defender.

Hi,
Thanks for all the replies. Sorry should have said I'm using windows 8.

How do I get the full version of Security Essentials?

Also-what about spybot search destroy? it is better than defender?

Windows Defender in windows 8 is just a re-branded version of MSE, but I wouldn't recommend using it as it became a complete pain in the backside with some definition updates not even being downloaded and certain legitimate programs being held for several seconds before being allowed to run

I wouldn't recommend AVG either from past experience with that heap of junk, but Avast is miles better then both of them with the only annoyance (apart from those occasional security notice pop ups) being the yearly registration required for the free version.

Spybot as also fallen from grace, but having malwarebytes anti malware installed would be better even with the free version.

I'm trying latest build of AVG 2014 IS(earlier build I tested was a little bit buggy on Win8.1) and so far its been fine so looks like this latest build has fixed the issues I had ie speed improvements, odd pause gone.

Avast 2014 RC3 is also another favourite of mine too.

Norton sent an email asking for £65 to renew a shortly-to-expire 3 user licence for Norton 360. When I told the online agent that a new copy of this is only £35 (even from crappy Currys) he said that £65 was the normal price and the best he could do. So I told him I would use McAfee - at which point he said that I was a valuable customer and gave me a link to buy it for £35 as well. Then pushed to get me to renew.

I said I was annoyed about being ripped off and would think about it and asked him to send an email with details - but of course "we don't have the facility to send emails." What? Are they in the dark ages at Symantec?

This is just like car insurance - loyalty isn't rewarded.

B"£$%^%cks to Norton, I'm switching to Kaspersky.
