Update to my previous post above,AVG 2014 IS is still working great on Win8.1 and it has given me no issues,so very positive so far,lightweight and no slow downs while gaming/browsing etc...

MS Security essentials. I struggle to see why anyone would want anything else, especially paid for AV. They're all very similar. Fine if you just like trying alternative software but IMO I'd rather use MSSE developed by MS for use on MS OS's and just let it do it's thing and save time by not using others.
I've used a few others in the past AVAST, AVG, Avira and it's not possible for us to know which one gives the best protection at any one time. Now MSSE has gone through the devepment cycle and is a good product.
IMO you have to go looking in dark places to catch a virus anyway so saying one AV is slightly better than another because it might be better at protection is a bit of nonsense. I've not had a problem since 2001 and back then it was on a company network where the virus just copied itself around the network after one PC was infected. The company was the first to report it to their AV supplier.
if you're one of the first to be exposed to a new virus then you're pretty much buggered anyway, regardless of the AV you have.

It's simple,there are better free protection AVs out there,now anybody with some common sense would go for the best freebies rather then one that is not,even Microsoft admit this ,so straight from the horses mouth so to speak http://lifehacker.com/microsoft-admits-that-third-party-antivirus-is-more-eff-1441135677 .
End of the day you want the best AV/Security as possible even if you stay on a free version ,case closed.

True. Education is key here.
Education is part it is like somebody knowing about security and how to fit a door lock,you would probably go for the best possible rather then something not quite as good.
So its better to get the best you can get especially if there are better free alternatives in the case of AVs,obviously no AV or user is perfect so you'll always have that unknown factor part.
I agree with what Microsoft remarked,MSE is a baseline to start with but there are better ones out there,one of the best things Microsoft did was include an AV on Win8/8.1 ie Defender,anything that improves security in an OS is always a good thing and its better then nothing.

Hello, i have been researching a few antivirus programs i will be buying soon for my upcoming build, i have some ideas but im not exactly sure, price is not an issue (unless its something crazy priced
).
I have been looking at Avast as this was what i had been previously using but im not sure if i should go with it again. as the version i had is quite old.
Any suggestions ?

Never pay for AV. Microsoft Security essentials comes highly recommended by many members of this forum.
Don't allow AV to be your only line of defence. It's much more important to exercise caution and keep software up-to-date.
