What is the best antivirus program to use on a machine with windows 2000 server on it.. as many of the free software will not work on windows 2000 server?
Thanks in advance guys :)

You're right; not many free editions work on server installs at all. ClamAV does, and is free, but isn't the best at detection. You're a bit stuck tbh unless you pay. AVG used to work on server installs, I'm not sure if it still does though?

I'm using Avira Antivir on Windows 7 HP 64-bit. What are people's opinions if I made the switch to MS Security Essentials? Cheers.

Simply? Don't do it. Avira is one of the best (if not the best) at detection and prevention, whereas MS is mediocre at best. Check out MSE's score in the latest AV Comparatives if you don't believe me, it's rather poor. I have real world experience of MSE missing well known, established trojans that all other AVs catch. MS's response was basically "it's free; pay us for the enterprise version or else don't moan that MSE is rubbish".

If your Avira is due for renewal and you don't want to pay again, either opt for the free edition or else try Avast 5 free edition. Both are very good, and much better at on-demand detection/prevention than MSE. They're also both very light and unobtrusive. :)

Well if I could go back to 2003 I would have voted Norton all the way, but since 2004 they messed up completely and lost the plot. I used to use Kapersky up until last year when some hacker took out one of my hard drives. Since then I have been using AVG Free and to be honest have never come across a problem with it. I am using a P4 2.8ghz cpu with 1 gig of memory with XP Pro and can honestly say that there is no problems with AVG using up resources, it works just as good as any anti virus I have ever used since the year 2000, and being free is a totally big bonus. Years ago AVG was crap I must admit and I would not of touched it with a barge pole, but now it's improved into something that works fine.

My mate uses kaspersky still, well that was until he upgraded to Windows 7 32 bit. I fresh installed the OS on his PC and everything was fine till I put on Kaspersky, I never encountered such a bad anti virus system in my life before that was way from anything near compatible with Windows 7. His PC took over 20 minutes to boot. I totally done another fresh install of Windows 7 to make sure Kapsersky was entirely out of the way, and put on AVG Free for him. His PC runs sweet and he's way happy he no longer as to pay for an anti virus anymore.

No matter what anti virus you go with, if it works well on your system stick with it, do not even think of changing it till something goes wrong with it is my theory. Why change a good thing. Just looking at the top votes here for NOD 32/MSE Free/Kaspersky looks good to me, but just because they work great on other peoples systems, it certainly does not mean they will work that good on your own.

I totally agree with you! In my old job, I installed NAV 2001/2/3/4/5/6 then we switched to F-Secure. NAV 2003 was the last version to be solely an antivirus because from version 2004 onwards, they attempted to tackle spyware as well. While 2005 was slightly better, 2004 was blighted with false positives, and in my opinion, was best left purely as an AV program. 2004/5 was also around the time when NAV started to become bloatware.

I have been sent a brand new copy of Norton 360 that can be installed on 3 machines.

Im currently using Nod 32

What is this AV package like?,is it still considered a Norton resource hog or has Norton improved nowadays

I still stick with AVAST, the past few weeks it has blocked normally legit websites from potentially harming my PC via the adverts they use, the latest for example is the popular celebrity wallpaper site which tried to load a website in the BG which AVAST flagged:

Tried MS Security Essentials but had a seriously bad affect on my laptop. It was so bad that for the 1st 10mins after startup the laptop would be unusable as the hd would be forever reading and writing. Went back to Avira.

I've been using Avira Premium for the last 2 years. Got the first year free via TrialPay and paid the renewal the following year.

It's due for renewal next week so I'm very tempted to try MS Security Essentials. Seems to get good feedback.

My Nod ran out a few days ago, i don't know if i wan't to re-sub again i was going to get another licence this time for the laptop also (2x licence).

1 licence - 3 years - £44+Vat
2 licence - 3 years - £62+ Vat

Atm i have MSE on the laptop and find it fine! Cant make up my mind though

Also is a Malwarebytes licence for a year ? or life?

Edit..

Never mind bought 2 copies of nod32 & Malwarebytes (15% off code) too :D
