Hmm... I've been meaning to order the Hellsing mangas for ages! I go back home for a month in about 6 days: are there any etailers out there who can get it to me in this short a time?

Did have a look when I was collecting them and ended up finding a specialist bookstore that stocked them as the shortest order time I could find online was at least month for some of the books.

Limited editions? I thought the only other versions of the Eva manga was the Special Editions. That only differed from the 'original' version by reading right to left and not having the SFX translated.

Sorry, my stupid mistake there, I did mean the Special Editions, the ones that only go up to book seven and then stop for no apparent reason, or not that I can find.

R.O.D. TV is great, if a little predictable in places (and here would be the spoiler if I could remember the colour code to put it in, but I can't at the mo) although totally unpredictable in other places which more than makes up for it.

On a totally unrelated subject is there anywhere that lists the numbers of dvds pressed for limited editions etc, or is it just a case of searching until you find the information. Purely because I'm curious about how 'limited' some of my releases are. Some editions, like Appleseed have the pressing number and total number printed on the packaging but most don't appear to do anything of the sort.

Now onwards to bed and sleep, the first proper sleep in 2 days :D

aaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh

I thought to myself "what the hell is anime - but after reading through i realised im actually really into it - i seriuoly like gundam wing - unfortunately - i no longer have sky so i can't watch it anymore - love stuff like that mind - ive seen things like metropilis and thought they were ok - but i prefer things with action and sci fi in them but with a decent story line - somathing hard hitting or complex is fine

i don't mind conversions but tbh i prefer to watch all things in their original language with subtitles

i read somewhere that telling you pro's what i like will help you pick something out to get me started - please help - i have far to much spare time on my hands!!!

Really daft question for you all, but what exactly are the Art Box Limited Editions all about?

Is it just the cardboard box that holds all the volumes of the Series?

Only I'm thinking about ordering Gilgamesh & not sure wether I should pay the extra for the Artbox Edition or not.

Soundwave, the LE artboxes are normally at the most basic a nice way of storing the discs for a series.
A lot also have additional items related to the series, such as OST's, T-shirts and models/figures*.

Sometimes they continue the LE throughout the release such as happened with Hack//Sign (t-shirt, plush toy, OST, game demo + stickers in the first volume, OST's in the later volumes), or Ghost in the Shell which used the LE's for the DTS version and had T-shirts/OST's and a very nice tin box (Volume 7 had a t-shirt and the tin box for $50rrp compared to $30rrp for the standard disc) :)

The Gits:SAC LE's were pretty good value, as for $32 (if you shopped round) you got the DVD's (normal one + DTS track one) plus a nice t-shirt :)

The actual quality of the boxes varies a lot, some are basically paper thin card (although fortunately that seems to have stopped now), others are thick card, and some are "chipboard".
Some like the Ai Yori Aoshi and Chobits boxes vere very nice in terms of artwork, others like the GITS:SAC and Fullmetal Alcemeist ones are tin/metal.

Sometimes they also sell them seperately as a premium item for the series as happened with Bubblegum Crisis 2040, Evangelion and Gasaraki, all of which had very nice metal boxes (cost about $40 each).

By the sounds of it, you might like Gundam 0083 (you can get the R1 4 disc set from www.dvdpacific.com for about £22 delivered) and the other Gundam series, although most are only out on R1 at the moment.

You might also like Macross Plus (£9 from a major DVD retailer, otherwise RRP £20 for the 3 disk set).

*From memory LE pack-ins with boxes have included
Figures
Games Demo's (Hack//Sign had a demo of the PS2 game)
"ID" cards (Gits:SAC)
Key Chains
Lanyards for mobile phones
Models
Panties :p (Najica Blitz Tactics)
Pencil Boards (plastic coated postcard type things originally intended to be used as backing when writing)
Plush toys
Post Cards
OST's
T-Shirts

thanks - ill look into purchasing some as soon as funds become available - I am quite bored at the moment and have nothing to do

A couple of inane questions...

Well, I walked into this little anime/mange store and saw that they had all 6 vols of Hellsing. Seeing as I've got a couple of long flights and a couple of even longer coach rides ahead of me I bought them all to keep me sane and boredom-free on the coach, although of course I couldn't resist and have already read the first 2 vols!:D

So, question 1 is: is Anderson supposed to be Irish? He seems to take it personally when told that Hellsing are active in N. Ireland. But his accent seems Scottish to me, not that I'm an expert. But, then again, if he's Scottish, why is he a Catholic?

Question 2 is: there were A LOT of Transformers merchandise in that manga store.... and it wasn't just stuff from the recent series, but models of robots from the original '80s cartoon (of which I was a huge fan, back in the day:D). BUT I really thought the original cartoon (and its immediate sequels) were American. Or were they? Was it a rebranded/dubbed anime that the American networks took and reworked? What about the current series (of which I only watched one random episode out of curiosity and really hated it)? Is that Japanese or American?

Transformers were always a Jap frnachise, originally they were a side line for Takara's Microman toy line but branched out & became its own series of toys, then the cartoon followed as with you I thought originally it was a US show. & I still think it is
Japan picked it up & aired & then they crested their own universe & it was followed by 3 more series & a 2pin offs..Headmasters, Masterforce, Victory, scramble city & Zone

Headmasters replaces our 4th season, Masterforce introduced the Powermasters, Victory brought the Pretenders in While Scramble City was a one shot bridging Season 2-3 & the movie.Zone however was designed to be a straight to Videos series but got cancelled after juts 1 episode, the balance of the saga was released as Manga

This was follwed in Japan by 2 hand animated Beat Wars series (They hated the US CGI stuff so made their own one's instead :D) & has subsequently spawned the last 4 Series...Robots in Disguise, Armada (Micron Legend), Energon (Superlink), Cybertron (Galaxy Force)
Basically as you can see from the more recent show's they have certainly gone back to the Anime routes with regards to the human character I mean Kicker & his partners in crime all look very much your typical Anime now, whereas in the early stuff Spike etc we're all very much US style werent they?

So in all honesty I still dont know if Japan made it first or not.

Neil

Transformers was I beleive animated/originally made in Japan I beleive, but paid for by a U.S. toy company (Hasbro).

I know the animators licenced the use of transforming mecha from at least one other Anime to use in the show (Jetfire was a Valkyrie from Macross TV*), which I don't beleive would have happened if the show was made in the U.S.

*Which is also I think why there was only one or two production runs of the original Jetfire as seen in Transformers (I think the licence ran out).

i presumed he was meant to be irish.....

warning, read slowly, you don't want to finish them too quickly because 6 isn't the last one. volume 7 is out in september in the states apparently.

So you're saying that, for once, Japan licensed and imported a Western cartoon and proceeded to make sequels and spin-offs from it?

it was followed by 3 more series & a 2pin offs..Headmasters, Masterforce, Victory, scramble city & Zone
I have no idea what any of those are!:p
Headmasters replaces our 4th season, Masterforce introduced the Powermasters, Victory brought the Pretenders in While Scramble City was a one shot bridging Season 2-3 & the movie.Zone however was designed to be a straight to Videos series but got cancelled after juts 1 episode, the balance of the saga was released as Manga
Hold on, I thought the original series was only 2 seasons? What are you talking about season 4 for? Or was it released under the Headmasters title because it had different settings/characters? But the movie, as far as I remember anyway, it's been a long time, seems to have the same setting (Earth), and quite a few of the same characters (on the Decepticon side anyway), so I always assumed it was a direct sequel to the original series.

So these latest series are in fact "proper" anime, which is simply imported and dubbed for Western audiences?

Transformers was I beleive animated/originally made in Japan I beleive, but paid for by a U.S. toy company (Hasbro).

That's what I thought too, which is why it'd be really weird to find out that it was made by Japanese cartoonists. OTOH if, as Werewolf says, they were just doing work-for-hire for Hasbro, the might've been instructed by their paymasters to keep things in the Western style (ie. no big eyes or spiky hair). And if you're BOTH right then this show must've had a complicated history - tell me if I've got this right:
a. concept of transforming robots lisenced by Hasbro and developed into the original Transformers series
b. animation work for the original series farmed out to a Japanese studio, though voice work done by American actors
c. original series lisenced and reimported BACK into Japan  and developed into sequels and spin-offs
d.meanwhile Hasbro continue their own sequels and spin offs in parallel (who made the movie anyway?)
e. latest incarnations of the series are of Japanese origin and are lisenced and dubbed for Western consumption.

Heh?!?

PS. I felt very alienated by the new-style series when I saw that one episode. Not just by the humans: even the Transformers themselves seem less roboty.

That's certainly good news!
