But if it isn't then why throw it in at all? Are you telling me the boxart isn't trying to show a venerable lithe young female character? Hardly a typical western werewolf is it? Especially the season 1 cover. Look at the symbolic colours, pose and eyes. Seriously you can downplay it by saying its not as extreme as x y or z but in isolation to someone who hasn't been desensitized its pretty creepy/pervo.
Because within context it is part of Holo's character; this has already been explained. The anime is a faithful translation of the novel; exactly these same scenes happen in both the original novel, the recent manga and the anime.
It's not a series aimed at kids but ones aimed at older readers and viewers; and in terms of desensitized, you two are the FIRST people I've come across who've made any big deal about the series in this sense, and like has been pointed out by several of us, you see stuff worse than this these days in adverts, advert posters, music videos, dramas...list goes on.
Fuss was made over how OVER sexualised the westernised cover for the first novel was BECAUSE its not representative of the series; and in regards to the covers of the DVDs themselves...seriously, sex...in any small form sells (yes, look at all the adverts that feature it in any form!!), and the series itself is for those between the ages of 18-30...go figure, they've chosen artwork they feel might appeal to the core age group. The series itself is not about this.
Besides, as a small point; Holo isn't even a werewolf, she's a pagan wolf god, as the series is set in a pseudo-middle europe, and oddly enough if you look back into history, you can see far worse in terms of religious iconography or imagery, or even as just art. Nothing is new about nudity in art; the whole point is context and purpose; and it's use in the series itself has that; or are you the sort of person who get's outraged at nudity in Renaissance or Christian artwork?
If we're desensitised to this sort of stuff; call it pop culture, nothing more, like I say I've shown it to several other people in thier mid 20s, and none of them batted an eyelid either, several of whom weren't anime watchers; I also lent the first season to one of my work mates, who watched it with her other half and they're both in the late 30's and again neither of them complained (in fact they asked if I had the second series around).
