Angel Beats is a more phrenetic mix of action, drama and humour than Clannad, but still worth a watch. The 'rocket seats' scene gets me every time :D
As a nice touch, every single OP is slightly different, as they all alude to the episode itself. :)

I couldn't stand the rocket chair scenes. They seemed so..out of place with the serious stuff. I guess that's the main flaw i found with Angel Beats, it could never decide what it wanted to be exactly.

Kanon
Air
Ano Hana
True Tears

Are good 'sad/emotional' animes.

See, at the point of watching Angel Beats I didn't really have too many preconceptions on what the series would be or how serious it would be; and given there was a strain of humour running all the way through I found it relatively easy to adapt to the changes in mood; although like I say at times they were a bit schizophrenic, but rarely in the same scene.

I found it quite an easy watch in that sense; as there were different elements I could enjoy.

I absolutely love the extra episode for angel beats where it has the high tension plan, always cracks me up.

On the last few episodes of ouran high school host club, been a decent series and a nice change from the usual schoolgirl thing. Usagi drop though has me totally sucked in, I can't wait for each next episode!

Yeah just watched high tension plan last night was funny as.

Btw another good anime i watched recently were

Best Student Counsil. I thought it would be a bit boring but it was pretty good imo. Nicely drawn and a nice dub imo.

Kurokami. Was a great series i thought the doppeliner system was pretty good. Nice little twist who the bad guy was at the end too.

Shikabane Hime (corpse princess). Really liked this one as well. Start doesnt really grab you but a few eps in you get to appreciate it more and more. The monk reminds me of someone else from another anime but I cant recall.

Tweeny Witches. Little boring at first but picks up quater way through. Nice anime tho.

Ultra Maniac. Nice anime when bored but nothing special i would say.

Great Teacher Onizuka. Great anime tho the animation isnt as good as modern stuff but it has its moments. Has its good ecchi moments too iirc. :)

Demon King Daimao. Another great anime and my kind of anime with it being modestly ecchi and all. :) Good characters, nice enough plot and a nice dub.

Dance in the Vampire Bund. Only watched a few eps, it was a bit boring i think but it might perk up. Was a little surprised a very young girl was nude but as was said a while ago. It isnt sexual at all and lacking anything you young pervs might wana see lol.

Well those are some of the anime i have seen these past few months.

It does indeed pick up, the whole 'surprisingly young girl' is explained later on. Needless to say all is not all as it seems, although I won't spoiler exactly how, and it's not just the case that it's because she's a vampire and older than she looks. Like you I was also a bit surprised earlier on, but once all the explanations are done the actual series itself is interesting.

Surprisingly, the anime also has an ending that actually does a reasonable job, which is more than can be said for most anime-only endings.

Mmm, I didn't mind GITS but I know what you mean. The biggest offender to me out of the classics so far has been Akira though; I was expecting a much better film with all the hype.

Watched Baka and Test season 1 on BD earlier. Quite an amusing series and something a bit different for a school based series. Quite amusing and a nice comedy series. There's next to no character development but it's not the sort of series you'd expect any in anyway.

As for whether things are over-hyped and pretentious ... it is difficult to say really as you need to compare them with things which were around at the time rather than modern series which have come since. Personally I agree that Akira and NGE are both over hyped for what they are but that wasn't necessarily the case when they were released. I disagree on GITS, it is supposed to be more than just an action series, hence the sections which can be taken as pretentiousness ... but it's supposed to be a series which makes you think about the topics brought up instead of just watching the action.

Watched ep one of Ga-Rei Zero. Found it really boring and no idea whats going on apart from some ghost/alien thingys lol. Anyone know if it gets better?

Probs would have liked ep 1 more if it went into a bit of backstory first instead of just action episode.

I wouldn't say it's a great series overall but it's ok. It is one of those series which drops you into the thick of it and then explains things later as it goes along.

Akira was a lot better as a whole. Saying that, it was still half an hour too long for its own good.
