I loved the first, although it is a little slow burning. Which is fine by me but will put a lot of people off. Especially the merchant/market/currency storyline, however, I like it.

It's strange, I'm not entirely sure what timeline it is based off of but a lot of the techniques and currency methodology can be applied to today's economy. :)
 
That element of it doesn't change, but there's more focus on individual events and places rather than the more frequent travelling seen in the first series :)

Also noticed my order for the BDs with R.S is listed as processing and a few people have got the BDs in the US so perhaps I'll be seeing mine in a few weeks time. Otaku.co.uk also have my order for the new artbook, but whether I'll see that soon or not I don't know yet as they're not quite sure how soon they'll have it :)
 
That's good. A lot of characters have had mere cameos except Horo and Lawrence (is it holo or horo? I assume Horo due to Japanese dialect.)

It's nice and different, it's quite bold to make an anime about peddling and economics with a mysterious ancient wolf added for spice... :p
 
It's Holo - it was initially translated as Horo due to the R/L situation in Japanese, which has stuck with a lot of the fans, however the official translation is Holo. The Japanese license holders forced Yen Press, who translate the books in the west, to use this translation as they actually enquired due to the fan support for the original Horo translation. Her name is actually shown written as Holo very briefly (possibly for this very point) in the book 3 section of the second season of the anime.
In terms of characters you'll see a reasonable amount of a few side characters during these arcs; due to the shift in focus they play a bigger role in the events, similar to how Nora played a larger part than most in the second arc of S1 (and appears in the S2 OVA).

You're right though, it's not often you find a (what is at heart a romance) drama, wrapped up in the swaddling clothes of fantasy and economics, which is certainly an interesting or different blend. Having seen the first season now, I'm sure you probably also agree with my statement that the series IS just that, rather than some sort of pervy material as was suggested a few weeks back haha :D

If you do like the series, take the time to read the books if you get a chance; by and large the series is a pretty faithful translation, and a good one at that, the book however does give you more insight into Lawrence's thoughts and also contains extra details and minor scenes which you won't see in the series due to time constaints. Unlike many poor adaptations, the novels feel like an expanded, slightly more indepth version of what you see in the series, compared to most adaptations often leaving you feeling that a lot has been stripped away from the novel to fit everything in.


Edit: Just finished Tonagura. Not a bad little series actually, nothing major but overall I found it a fairly sweet little drama/comedy with its heart in the right place. Not big or clever but perfect holiday material.

Edit Edit: Whoop. My S&W BD sets have shipped. Judging by the order page both seasons 1 and 2 (Ltd Ed), hopefully I'll have them by the first week of September :)

Just finished the second K-on!dvd,The English dub is sounding better the more i hear it....J/K lol
And watched the Fuwa Fuwa Time video on the disc :( shudders that is a few minutes of my life I am never getting back ewwww
Been watching Wolfs Rain this afternoon,started it a few years ago only got up to ep 10 but I think i am going to like it :)

There you go you see, after the delightful English song on volume 1 I avoided the rendition on volume 2 ... hence I haven't lost any time ;)

Finished Witchblade earlier ... I actually enjoyed it more than I was expecting. That sort of action series isn't really one of my favourite genres but this was quite reasonable with not to much in the way of gratuitous violence. Even thought the ending was ok. Watched it on the US BD release and it looked pretty good for the most part.

Also re-watched the latest couple of episodes of Iroha, the latest Usagi Drop and caught up with Ikoku Meiro no Croisee (which is a delightful little series so far).

Playasia have been a bit odd with my Usagi Drop CD order (Op & ED singles, plus sound track). After emailing me Monday and saying they were splitting the order they sent out two of the disks. They then sent the remaining disk out today?!?!? If they had waited <24hrs they could have shipped them together and saved (themselves, they didn't charge me more) on postage. In fact the third CD was in preparing for shipment when I received the email to say the others had been sent ....
 
I think this might be it if I remember right. And no that's not the youtube video, it apparently DOES sound that bad. I've heard better fandubs of songs, no joke at all!

Looks like it's been confirmed that several more of the ex-Geneon series which were being distributed by Funimation have had their licenses expire. This includes Kamichu and The Story of Saiunkoku season 1 both of which are really nice series.

But on the upside Sentai have solicited a BD release for the first season of Clannad for November.

If anything I wish the first series was as long as the 2nd!

Damn that video, people weren't exaggerating with it! I would be annoyed to have paid for that quality.
 
I wouldn't have minded S1 being as long as S2 because they focused on different things. Arguably with the change of themes, I'd have prefered S1 to be 24 and S2 to be 12 :D

RE: Fuwa Fuwa Time - I'm sure plenty of people would have prefered the original Japanese songs with subs/hardsubs/karaoke subs over that!
 
I do think songs shouldn't be dubbed but subbed as they never work as well at the original. I personally don't enjoy dubs for anime but I understand why people do though.
 
I think that one of the few songs in an anime which has worked well in dub form is from MoHS when Haruhi sings at the school festival. Yes the Japanese song is better but the song in English is reasonable.

I am just glad that the K-On disks are not dub only ... fortunately just watching with the Japanese audio is still an option ...
 
That song does seem a little, erm poorly done:p
I wonder if it was because they were trying to keep to the "beat" with a fairly faithful translation or something (some of the English VA's Funi etc use are normally pretty good singers, and some of the animé song translations have been done very well in the past).

Utena box 3 is up for pre-order at rightstuf now, so I've placed an order for that, school rumble S1 and 2 (can't see more than disc one on UK sites), and Arakawa under the bridge (my second NIS title).
 
I think the japanese quality has allot to do with the way that the japanese side of things does things.

The female voice actors over in japan usually train to sing and its a normal routine for them.

On the otherhand, american voice actors are just there to dub whats already been done, its more of a localisation process. To top it all of, the american voice actors arent singers.

I just think redubbing the original stuff gives a very amateurish feel to the english stuff.

Another point i would make is that japanese ladies can pull off sounding cute and childish, it is very natural for them. Unfortuntely when this style is emulted for western audiences it just sounds irritating, as its not very natural at all.

I wouldn't say that, a lot of the US VA's are singers, not as a main career (IE releasing albums), but many of them are trained as singers and sing live a lot (on stage in musicals etc), I think it's more the localisation and the style doesn't fit well to English a lot of the time.



And in more pre-order news, Whisper of the Heart Blu-ray/DVD combo is up for November 21st on various sites, ranging from around £16 and up.
I think it took me about 30 seconds from reading that news on ANN to hitting "order".
 
Well yeah, it's not that they aren't singers, i know a few of the more well known ones do musical stuff as a side thing. It's more, as you say it's not their main career, whereas on the japanese side of things, it's often done in tandem with the voice over stuff.

I think the crux of it is that western dubs approach hyper and cartoony in a different way to the original cast.
