The AMD Driver Thread

I'm running a single 290X and don't really play many current releases at the minute (Overwatch being the newest and probably the exception). Not really having any issues (other than the fact my 290X is reference and runs hot and loud), so is it worth me upgrading my drivers from 16.6?

Upgrade and find out :p can always go back if you feel the need for what ever reason.

If your games are working to your satisfaction then I would say no. When I was playing mainly older games and everything was stable I would just leave the drivers.

Well I'd be invclined to agree with BF1... the usage rarely gets above 52% ever so it's never even using all the GPU... weird considering BF3/BF4/Hardline are always in the 85%+ range... hey ho suppose they'll get it right in around 7 months which is what it took BF4.

Saying that, it's stable so at least DISE with their quick patches have fixed it for me.

And Raptr's stop working with Elite Dangerous (again)... It's not even offered as a option if you try and add a game manually...

We're currently aware of an issue where users are having trouble getting Elite: Dangerous and/or the Elite Dangerous: Horizons DLC detected. Unfortunately, there was a change that is currently preventing us from being able to detect the game. We are working on getting this resolved and I appreciate your feedback on the subject. Thanks for your patience while we sort this out.

Its not daft really, as i don't play the latest games, all the game i play, work fine on these 16.3s, and run great, ive got no issues with them at all, as the saying goes, if it aint broke....., i used to update them religiously every month, or every time a new one came out, but ive learned now, theres just no point, as i could update, and get problems.

You read it all the time, these drivers are ****, (insert game here) is ****** on these, was running great on the previous set, had no issues at all, rolling back :p

The thing is the drivers have been great for Fiji owners since Crimson released and they fixed the teething issues. Like you I thought they were a mess when Crimson released with my gpu stuck trying to run games at 300mhz and something else I've forgotten now but they got ironed out within a few weeks and since then there's been the odd issue but nothing major and they got fixed quickly. Currently the main games I'm playing are Dying Light (I keep going back to it, great game) Civ 6 and WRC 6 but I do chop and change what I'm playing a lot and it's pretty much plain sailing.

Yes, If you are using a single gpu it's time to update the drivers, you may even find some games improve thanks to optimisations,

But as someone else said if everything is fine and you don't need fixes for particular games what's the rush!

I'll only be updating when i need to, which will be when i get around to DOOM, as i'll need to update then for that, to use Vulkan, i just don't see any point in updating every month, or every time a new driver comes out anymore, not when everything runs fine without a problem, and frames are great anyway, if it ain't broke.... :)

Doom's a great game, I really enjoyed it and on Vulkan performance was brilliant. I'll have to boot it up and see how it runs on the new monitor later.

New drivers installed, flickering has gone on Ballroom Blitz, not checked the other maps yet, but Ballroom was the worst for the flicker and terrible scaling.

So, almost full ultra @ 1440p, scaling isnt bad and the flicker appears to be fixed. But here's the thing, with Post Process set to high or ultra, look at the shimmer on the floor.

And now compare with Post Process set to Medium...shimmering gone
