The AMD Driver Thread

Not sure if this is a driver issue, but I've just switched out my GTX 980s for a Fury X. Some times the performance in games is awful. Diablo 3 and Heroes of the Storm both give me 5-7 fps. Same with Heaven.
But other times I get over 100fps in both games (Heaven is around 40-ish).
Any ideas?

Also my Fury X seems to give considerably worse performance in PUBG than a GTX 980. Is that normal or could this be connected?

When you switched cards? Are you using 18.8.1? Did you install the new drivers over a clean wiped system with DDU?
Can you open the overlay in game (ctrl+shft+O) and see the VRAM consumption?
Does your FuryX has the UEFI bios, AMD released in April 2016? Because that improves performance because it changes the way it communicates with the motherboard. (no FuryX sold from new has the bios).

DDU in safemode...You don't want MS installing their own drivers...I had it happen to me so I know it can happen. And MS did it while I was installing current drivers.

My monitor was flickering to black several times...

I'm using 18.8.1 and I did use DDU.
I've got Afterburner running and it didn't show any VRAM issues (I'll double check if it happens again).
Yes, I upgraded to the UEFI BIOS.

This was happening...
How can I tell if Windows installed drivers too? Afterburner is showing 18.8.1 as is the AMD driver software.

There are 2 ways I know of.
1st uninstall the drivers like normal without DDU.
Reboot the PC. At desktop right click on it. "AMD Radeon Settings" shouldn't be an option. The 1st option should be "View"
Wait about 5 Minutes. Ole faithful will install AMD drivers. When you right click again "AMD Radeon Settings" should be 1st. The time frame of when this happens exactly is hard to predict. In your case it might be instant.

2nd way is to hold the window key + Pause key > Device Manager > Display Adapter.
But again wait about 5 minutes. It might update again.

What I found to work best if you don't like DDU is to uninstall, wait a few minutes. Let win10 install it's AMD's drivers. Then once you are updated then install your current drivers. 18.8.1.

Whenever you install drivers the flicker to black and back to desktop should only happen once. That is the sign that only 1 driver is being installed.

Edit:
If your copy of windows defaults back to win10's drivers the flickering might happen twice.

18.8.1 contained a fix for FreeSync flickering so if anyone has issues i would give that driver a go and see how you get on.

Awesome! Shame it seems to have made things worse for some people, might give them a miss for the next batch.

Go to drivers and see here. Set it 1-2fps bellow 144hz for Freesync to work properly if you have FS monitor. (it will avoid overshooting to 145+ fps)

Would also like to point out that I've noticed at times FRTC isn't always obeyed, however if you don't use Radeon Chill try enabling it and setting Max and Min FPS to the same number as I've noticed that's more often obeyed.

Ark on the menu running windowed borderless springs to mind, not sure if that ignores just FRTC or both. Oh and Payday 2, noticed it I think on big bank when your at the edge of the map and look out FPS shoots up.

Edit: If there was a way to tweak Chill that'd be awesome, sometimes I wouldn't mind dropping the minimum lower so long as if there were any movement it would jump higher, for example most of my games have a Chill Min of 47 and when I press a single input, say forward or fire, it'll go up-to 60. Then as I get more frantic it ramps up more. Would be cool if we could adjust it like a fan curve, so that I could lower the minimum and have it ramp up to an acceptable level with a single input. Currently if I lower the Min, it'll start lowering my single input FPS down from 60.

Has anybody here got Freesync flickering (i havn't) ?, but just to be curious, i did a FreeSync flickering search (after reading about it when i was going to get the Sammy CF791 which i discovered had it, as well as a Black screening problem), and the problem seems to be massive (and has been going on for over a year), as thread , after thread, after thread on it, even YT is filled with umpteen Freesync flickering videos

The flicker also happens on Gsync, its when a game is loading and has low fps the screen will jump in and out of the freesync range making the display flicker. This driver should reduce that.
If you getting flicking from say while playing a game at frame rate well within the range then that is a completely different issue.

Like shown here bit of an old video so am sure Nvidia like AMD has also worked on Gsync flicker.

i thought i had freesync flickering but i havent noticed it since i bought a dp 1.4 rated cable. also there must be something to do with the lighting in wow because i get little flickers in that but it is only in that game and when there is something with a flickering effect behind my character so i think its a lighting effect, cant find which one though.

Yeah ive seen mentions of it on loading screens etc..., but theres loads getting it while actually playing games too.

I didn't know the problem was that bad, (well i wouldn't have known tbh, as ive never had it, so ive never looked it up before), and yeah, ive seen people mention G-Sync flickering as well (in the Freesync flickering threads), and so done a G-Sync flickering search, and it does seem to be a problem with that too.

Yeah, ive also read about people changing cables too, but it made no difference.

From what I've seen its mainly acer monitors that show this on Gsync and freesync.

I've got the Samsung C24FG73 and yea there's flickering, depends on game I'm playing. Loading screens and main menus are worse, or maybe I just notice it more because I'm staring at a static image. Not sure what you mean by black screening problem? My screen fails to wake up if I turn it on before I do any system movement after it's been idle, result is a black screen as if there's no signal.

That's not my experience. Running my Samsung generally at a locked 60fps (under LFC as it's range is 70-144Hz) there's flickering sometimes and other times there isn't. And it's also dependent on games, some games are far worse for it. I'd agree that flickering occurs if there's a 'stall' in the game but that isn't the only time it happens.

The samsung CF791, as well as the flickering, also just randomly Black Screens, while starting games, while in the middle of playing games etc..., and the only way to get it back on, is to restart your PC, main reason i decided against it, and went for the BenQ EX3501R (plus i already had a BenQ that i had no issues with), and luckily, ive got no issues with it either, no flickering, no Black screens, nothing.

Awesome! Yea mine doesn't do that type of black screen thank god. I remember GamersNexus did a review of a samsung and their screen flickered with Polaris but I don't think it did with Vega.
