Thanks, appreciate the assistance. I managed to change the resolution in CCC to 1440x900 and the box on the left with refresh rate in it stayed at 60hz. But as soon as I try changing the box on the left with screen resolutions to 1920x1080 the refresh rate box changes to 29hz and I can't change it back to 60hz as you can see:-

Is it possible that your monitors refresh rate at 1080P is 29Hz? what make / model is it?

Also, when in this menu (see pic) what do you see?

I don't think DSUB can handle 60hz at HD res, and adapters can always be problematic. When you choose the high res, it's defaulting to the lower refresh it can handle. When you choose a high refresh, it's defaulting to a lower screen res. One or the other (most likely the refresh rate) is causing your monitor to fail to show the screen. CCC is correctly working within you monitor limits. It's can't do both high res and high refresh on a DSUB/VGA cable, because the cable/monitor can't support it.

Also I think it's been documented that VGA adapters don't work on 290 as it doesn't have the parts to output correctly. There are no guide pins for the analog circuit. You need a displayport-vga adapter. VGA is pretty much superceded for a long time now, same reason you don't get composite on the back of a graphics card. From here:

Please note that the DVI outputs no longer support analog monitors. AMD also improved their display controller hardware, so you can now use three HDMI/DVI monitors at the same time without having to buy an active DP-to-DVI adapter (this was a requirement to providing the TMDS clock signal for the third monitor on previous generation cards).

In fact, if you look at the card where the cables plug into the endplates, they may have the letters with VGA stamped on the metal and a line crossed through it to indicate "not compatible".

Top one is analog compatible, bottom one is digital only. Bottom one is what is on the 290.

I don't think anyone is expected to spend that much money on a graphics card and then run it over VGA adapters. You're not gaining the full benefit of a HD display.

It's an LG E2242S, it's native res is 1920x1080 @ 60Hz according to the manual.

I don't have any mention of 'Digital Flat panel displays' in CCC, only VGA is listed:-

So if I want to run this 7850 card, I need a new monitor, basically? :(

But if that was the case, I can't understand why everything worked perfectly well when I installed the card initially though, including running Arma III at high settings?.

Right, getting somewhere now. I unticked 'Use Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) or driver defaults' and set the max res to 1920x1080 @ 60Hz. Clicked apply and then went into 'Desktop Management' and set the res to exactly that. Clicked 'Apply' and it worked. Now back to my usual 1920x1080 resolution. Just about to reboot and see if it remains that way.

Edit.. ah, a possible result? ^^^

You shouldn't need a new monitor. no, unistall the Driver and reinstall. don't use DDU, just do it from Windows.

I need to think, i have to go for a while anyway. i will get back to you later :)

Rebooted, still at 1920X1080 60Hz. Yay.

However, getting some constant 'flickering' in games manifesting as horizontal lines across the screen, more noticeable in dark areas or night time situations. Kinda like RF interference sort of flickering. Desktop and browsing the web seems fine as does watching movies. Only seems to be affecting games. It's exactly like this guy was getting:-

Could this be solely down to the fact I'm not using DVI?

well i bought a powercolor R290, the 14.1 drivers did not work for me, my 3dmark11 score and firestrike score was lower than a GTX760 that i once tried, anyway on the 13.2 WHQL ones and all seem to be there abouts, i have had one black screen and a forced power down to recover, and i find the card quite loud compare to any other card i owned including my back up ati gto 800X :) so i have RMA'ed it, just posted in case others have had the same problem

Yes. Even though you've tricked the card to outputting a high res/high refresh setting by stopping it from using EDID, the monitor/cable can't really handle it. For some reason I though you had a 290, which is why I mentioned the adapters not working, but if you've got a 7850, then adapters will work.

There's been similar issues posted on the forum that were fixed by a new cable and getting rid of the adapter. Most monitors for quite a few years have at least one of DVI/HDMI/Displayport, so it would just be a new cable for most people.

There are active Displayport -> VGA adapters, and I've even seen a DVI-> VGA active adapter, but I don't know if these are any good.

I just checked the spec on the LG E2242S, and I think it's listed in some places as having a DVI-D port and in other as just DSUB. Can you turn it over and have a look to see if there are any ports at the back that you've never used? There may be little plastic covers over them.

If all you need it a new cable, it will make things work much better and be a pretty cheap fix.

Unfortunately it only has the D-Sub connection, like this:-

Once I've confirmed the card has no issues using DVI on my TV, I'll look into grabbing a new monitor which does have DVI. When I bought this monitor it didn't even cross my mind to make sure it had a DVI port as I didn't envisage ever really needing one. Rather annoying, bit of an oversight on my part, that. :p

That's a shame, as it's pretty hard to even buy a monitor nowadays that doesn't have a digital input of some sort. It seems that the S version of that monitor is DSUB only.

There's usually a pretty noticeable improvement when you go from DSUB to DVI or HDMI. When you use DSUB from your graphics card to a panel, you're effectively going digital -> analogue -> digital. With DVI, Displayport or HDMI, it's digital all the way. It's pretty much why DSUB has been obsoleted for quite a while.

Any news on if we'll have new drivers tomorrow guys?

Mantle is delayed for Thief, i think they are still working on the Drivers.

Looking at OC.net there seems to be an istall problem with this current one, some people are reporting that if they reinstall it over and over again they can get Mantle working properly.

Thracks has also recruited a bunch of BETA testers from there.

So, i'm not so sure we will get it in the next day or so.

Catalyst 14.2 Beta is all about Thief, Mantle patch not included

AMD will roll out Catalyst 14.2 Beta in a few hours and the new driver is all about Thief. The game launches today and it’s part of AMD’s Gaming Evolved programme.

Thief and the new driver bring a few interesting features. Support for 4K/UHD resolutions is on board from day one. The shadowing system is all new and AMD says a “notable percentage” of the rendering budget is spent on new shadowing algorithms. Compute shader-accelerated depth of field should deliver realistic focal lengths, silhouette enhancing tessellation should improve character geometry and SSAA is there to provide “buttery smooth” edges.

As for Mantle – nope, not yet. AMD says Thief will be patched to support Mantle and TrueAudio in early March.

Still, there is some news on the Mantle front. Catalyst 14.2 Beta resolves hangs and stuttering for the Mantle codepath in BF4. It enables multi-GPU frame pacing in BF3 and BF4 on non-XDMA configurations. AMD says Minecraft has also been fixed, although we still believe the only way to truly fix Minecraft is to uninstall it.

The Linux community is also getting a few interesting tweaks and features, including VCE functionality and improved UVD performance Hawai, Kaveri and Kabini products. GLAMOR library support has been added, too, and AMD says improvements to overall video transcode applications have been “substantially” improved.
