Well I'm back on 14.4 with my Asus 290x in win 8.1 64 bit... tried installing 14.9 last night - screen goes black during install - monitor fails to detect a signal - and it never comes back. Press the power button to shutdown, reboot, bios screen shows up fine, but as soon as windows starts to load, black screen then nothing.... Couldn't even get to the F8 repair screen, had to load from a windows 8 disk get to a command prompt and do a: "bcdedit /set {bootimg} displaybootmenu" yes so that I could get into safe mode... then had to do a system restore in safe mode to get back to a working machine!

Tried several times - even reinstalled windows with nothing else on to try and get these drivers to work - but no luck!

Yeah i got a blackscreen on windows 8.1 had to hard boot but seemed to install ok, that was on an MSI Gameing 290x

can test to change your cable might be the reason for the failed detection.
or the port on the card.

flawless update for me with a 290.

Don't think its the cable, for me it did almost the same.
I always start the installer, uninstall everything, restart, then install it, now it gone all black in the uninstall process.
I waited two mins to make sure it finished, then reset, safe mode, DDU, then installed it again.

I did change to the 2nd dvi port which didn't help, though I can't imagine there being a cable problem, as previous drivers work fine and never had any detection problems with them... infact it's almost as if it completely disables the graphics card.

I can't check if XFIRE is enable since the control centre won't load, but just to give you all an idea. The Vanishing of Ethen Carter at 2560x1440 at high is only getting 34FPS on average with two R9 280Xs.

It seems Xfire isn't working in it, and I can't check the profiles since the control centre won't load. :(

Try uninstalling the driver, then running DDU. After that try installing again, I have had that issue with 14.4 before.

Still having an issue with the idle bug, whenever I leave my PC unattended for 15-60 min, monitor goes to sleep and won't wake up. Windows Event always suggests that the display driver crashed. Reconnecting the DVI cable sometimes brings the picture back up, but most of the time, a hard reset is required.

Sleep mode is disabled in Windows, Power Profile set to High Performance on Windows 8.1 Pro x64. No random crashes in games, CPU and GPU are running at stock (tried two different VGA BIOS versions). Been happening ever since 14.4 WHQL, I think.

Any ideas?

EDIT: card in question is XFX Radeon 7970 Core Edition. Catalyst 14.9 WHQL, always a clean install using DDU.

Hi Mr Krugga,

Actually i have an update for everyone on this long standing monitor sleep issue. It's been replicated by the driver team and a fix is in the works which should be present in an up and coming driver. As soon as i know which driver that will be, i will post about it here and let you all know.

In the meantime the temporary fix is to disable monitor sleep.

Alright, thanks for a quick update Matt.

I disabled monitor sleep for the time being, hopefully that will fix the issue.

I have the monitor sleep issue as well (with a 295X2) ... funny thing is that the Dell UH2713M (on DVI-D) doesn't wake up, but the iiyama with mini-DP to DVI adapter has no problems and wakes up fine. I also disabled display standby as a workaround ... hope it'll be fixed soon.

Okay I uninstalled 14.9, ran DDU , and did a clean installed instead of a Firestrike score of 6200, I now get this.

14.9 on clean install, It's still a massive drop compared to 14.4

Old 14.4

It shouldn't be happening..

14.7 B3: FireStrike
GPU: 11888

14.9: FireStrike
GPU: 12016 (+1%)

14.7 B3: SkyDiver
GPU: 39049

14.9: SkyDiver
GPU 39137 (0%)

14.7 B3: 3DMark11
GPU: 16279

14.9: 3DMark11
GPU: 16476 (+1%)

every little helps...

Temperatures; i unistalled 14.9 and reinstalled 14.7 B3 just now to run these tests

With 14.7 B3 my peak temperature was 69c, with 14.9 it was down to 66c.

Conjecture, in FireStrike i always have got 2 or 3 flickers during benching in the same places, 14.9 made them go away, i got them before i installed 14.9 and i got them again after reinstalling 14.7 B3, i actually thought they are part and parcel i got so used to seeing them.

All in all i feel these drivers are a bit less of a strain on the GPU, reducing temperatures while maintaining performance if not increasing it slightly.

I'm quite pleased with them.

It shouldn't be happening..

Well it is, im going to uninstall run, DDU and install 14.4 again and run more tests.

I was just playing The Vanishing of Ethan Carter and couldn't keep a stable 50fps even at 3440x1440. I averaged low 40's and lots of dips to around 30, sometimes just below 30 for a split second.

My fan also revs up quite a bit in that game, it doesn't even happen in 3DMark
