Matt, do you know if there is a fix incomming to stop the VRAM running at full speed on card 1 if you have 2 monitors with different resolutions connected?

I'm really tempted by the 8GB 290Xs but it annoys me that with my 2 x 290s the top card runs at 55ºC idle because the VRAM is constantly at 1250MHz.

With 3 x 290Xs I'd imagine they'll get even hotter than that!

Hi GM,

I'm afraid that is by design so i don't envisage that changing so long as you use two monitors.

Oh.
Bit odd.
Doesn't do it with 2 monitors at the same resolution.

I have a follow up question that isn't driver related...

How do I connect 2 4K displays to a R9 290X?

Just connect 2 monitors with the same connectors. For example 2 dp or 2 dvi etc etc. Also 144 hz needs 3d clocks all the time. Otherwise disable powerplay ez pz

Beaten to it, but yep 2xDP connections.

You should have a DP and at least one Mini-DP

Edit. no that's ^^^ wrong not all have Mni-DP's.

What happens if you connect one to each card?

I edited that post, it turns out not all have Mini-DP.

So it depends on which card he has.

Can he not just connect one screen to each card?

Yeah the spec doesn't list any mini-DP

I own 2 reference Sapphire 290 cards, so was fairly confident about that anyway.

Don't think it'll work with one to each card, never used to.
Nvidia do spoil you like that, 3 DP connectors and I believe you can use all card too.

EDIT:
Matt, disappointed with you, you own 5 reference cards and didn't know there was no mini-DP port?

Hopefully someone has a solution to this as it's a bugbear and not a performance issue but is caused by the AMD drivers.

Basically the High Definition Audio controller gets the exclamation mark after installing the drivers, regardless of whether it's 14.4 / 14.7 / 14.9 / 14.9.1

Any ideas or fixes?

Yup - seen this myself. I believe it's down to ULPS. I got the same issue on my crossfire setup with one of the high def audio controllers, but it goes when you disable ULPS. Suspect it's windows detecting an "issue" with the audio section of the amd cards when it's in standby (or off?)?

Update
--------

I've recently reinstalled my drivers so ULPS was still on. Screen shot of devices with it enabled :-

And after disabling ULPS and rebooting -

AMD could do with having 3 DP's on their cards as standard.

Anyway, if you haven't tried connection a screen to each card in recent times i would try now, AMD have done some things with Eyefinity recently, including mixed res.... so you never know.

It appears it was ULPS, I just reinstalled 14.9.1 followed by afterburner and hadn't updated my afterburner settings.

thank you very much :)

Sorry GM, i edited my post to actually write something this time. :D

To save you going back, I don't think you can unless a DP-DVI dongle works. Even then I'm not 100% sure on that. I will have to investigate.

@Amdmatt

Have you reported Amd about 290s prob with dp controller, port when going over 1.4v+ (blackscreen)?

DVI is no prob on the cards.:)

Most likly it is a weak dp controller(dont like volt) but its important they nead to know.
Not evrybody are playing with air these days:D
Maybe they can fix it for future cards if they know the probs:)
