Taking into account all gpus including integrated and consoles, Nvidia is very much an underdog and needs as much support as possible. I always like to support the small guys.;)

not really a surprise for the power consumption, as i said before i saw a video of an AMD engineer saying that they are working hard on HBCC unexpected high power draw, my guess that's the main reason for the delay, they couldn't find a good enough solution, so they just gonna release it as is.
i just hope that the 300-400 range SKU is coming first, because if it's as rumored and we get 500$+ sku now and then 350$ at the end of the year, then vega is a bust, regardless of performance assuming that it wont beat 1080ti.

They are studying something similar.

Price being excellent must mean it's expensive... AMD can't sell Vega without considering ethereum pricing.

Polaris will continue to have best Perf/Power consumption ratio for mining ;)

But will Vega beat pascal like you claimed in a earlier tweet, you don't seem so confident now and neither does AMD

VEGA will be a great GPU, but to attack HPC market AMD needs NAVI.

The thing about Navi supporting infinity fabric (or something like it) and being multiple small dies on the same package has been speculated for a little while.

A couple of years ago (or even last year?) Raja had a presentation were he was making almost a weird amount of emphasis on how the mid-sized dies (say up to 300mm2) were far better to manufacture, and resulted in much better performance/£. And if only they could get that performance/£ at the high end.

And then, separately, they had a slide about Navi's defining feature being 'scalability'. And if it isn't like EPYC, but for GPU, I don't think it'd make sense for them to say Navi has 'scalability'.

GCN in general was able to scale pretty nicely from the £100 range to £500 range, from around 500 cores to 4000 cores (although it did has some problems with scaling past 3000 cores, as the FuryX showed). So their previous arch's can scale in the 'normal' sense.

If Navi really is multi-small-die though, it'll be an incredible change. Imagine if you could get 4 RX 580 cores all on the same die, scaling at 95%+, and with no need for driver magic, it just worked as 1 GPU as far as a game engine and API is concerned. You could get 1080 SLI performance (with near 100% scaling) for the price of a 1080 Ti.

The approach would also help a lot with cooling, if the multiple dies were separated from each other a bit like with EPYC. Combined with HBM2/3, you could almost make the entire card just one big heatspreader haha.

Well to be fair the 7nm node is way more interesting than the 14nm one. GloFo's 14 implementation is the worst of the bunch, and also the 7nm node is a larger jump than the worst 28nm to the best 16/14nm.

Also on top of that, if Navi is this multi-small-die arrangement, that's huge.

Even if Vega is a bit faster than the 1080 Ti, Navi is much more interesting anyway.

Interesting for Nvidia too, I feel I should mention. If Nvidia is going to do a Volta 2.0 on TSMCs 7nm (seems likely due to timing of things), we could easily see an 8000 core GPU from them which should also run higher than 2 GHz.

Maybe the 2080 will come on 12nm and the 2080 Ti will be 7nm.

Going by the way Nvidia have been doing their Ti models, I would say it would be similar to the 12nm GV100 they have recently shown off. This doesn't stop them doing a 2nd gen Volta like you said though on a 7nm die shrink. I've mentioned it before but it's weird to me that Volta is getting close to launching and we still know absolutely nothing about the successor or roadmap after Volta.
 
There will always be something better, up the road.

When 7nm is announced people will already be talking about 5 etc. It has been the same forever.

Buy what you need now or you may as well never buy anything.
