The Android rooting + flashing super guide

Been having an ongoing issue with my ringtone and message notification sounds changing for no apparent reason (Desire Z). Now that my phone is rooted, I've moved all the sounds to the phone's system folder. I'm guessing that it may have been caused by some of the tones being on the SD card previously. Fingers crossed that they don't change again.

Also anyone know of a terminal application that will allow me to create a batch file containing a couple of commands and allow me to place a shortcut to it on the homescreen?

Is this guide still up to date and valid? I'm staying in tonight and I want to crack on with rooting! :)

The Unrevoked website doesn't work, am I still O.K with using universal root method?

Before |I crack on, is there anything I should know about?

Thanks.

Ok, my first ever root and rom installed but I think some things have gone slightly wrong.

LeeDroid 3.0.7 is installed and as far as standard stuff goes it virtually similar to what I am familiar with however none of my old apps are installed, I thought when I ran Titanium Backup it would batch job save it and then I restored it, there was nothing there.

I checked my SD & Phone storage amounts and it's just the same as the stock. Over 2gb on the sd card and only about 38mb available space on the internal storage.

I think I need to format my sd card, but I can't work out what to do with it. It has to be FAT32 so I am in the process of formatting it now. Can I use ROM Manager to partition it or use ClockWorkMod.

What size is best for a 4gb card ??

Is this thread dead or something ?!?!

Anyway, been digging around and it would seem I have put a LeeDroid version that is built for Desire HD. I went on the LeeDroid website (nasty green colour) and can see the Desire version is on version 2.4.1

So should I remove the rom I am on and install this one. It doesn't look as good and updated as these newer roms.

So confused ?!?!

Just ran ROM Manager did a 512mb part, 0mb Swap file, restarted phone and it now just has a droid and an exclamation mark :(

ps that gingerbread version you linked to is what I have at the moment installed.

Try manually booting into recovery using power+vol down, wipe and flash the rom.

I think I have done it, but no idea how. I got the very very latest version from the xda site.

No idea how it happened but my sd card looks setup right too. I ran Quick System Info and there's loads of memory and I can move apps to SD card (most of them anyway). Here is the memory outlay:

SD Card Storage: 3.19gb - 3.01gb free
A2SD Storage: 457mb - 344mb free
Internal Storage: 148mb - 133mb free
System Storage: 250mb - 24.28mb free
System Cache: 40mb - 38.33mb free
Memory: 405mb - 112mb free 27.80mb idle

I have no idea if that is correct, setup for the ext3 partition etc but it's a darn sight more internal memory than before this latest rom.

I'm trying to root my Nexus S which is on 2.3.4 but I'm having trouble finding a decent guide.

Also I don't have a data cable unfortunately, but can transfer files using Awsome Drop.

If anyone could help in anyway, it would be very much appreciated! :)

mate pretty sure you will need a cable.. get one from ebay. not heard of rooting without one

You definitely need the cable. £ shop or similar should have micro USB cables I'm sure :) try there if you can't wait

Ah sweet, might pop there tomorrow seeing as it's only a pound! :D (if they sell them)

Any advice for someone who's never done it before? lol

I've downloaded so far:

  • the android SDK zip folder for fastboot.exe
  • recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.4-crespo.img
  • su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip

And then was planning on using this guide.

Everything good there, or have I downloaded the wrong files/reading the wrong guide? Don't wanna brick my NS or anything:)
