The anime thread sequel (it's still not as good as the Manga though),

Ooh, excellent, this'll make it a lot easier to discuss shows including critical plot points without accidentally spoiling everything. Good way to hide videos/pictures etc to stop them from making the thread messy too.

Glad to see this finally implemented.

I like Spice and Wolf...who'd have guessed?

Ahh so they finally got it working ... I was following the GD thread when they were testing them earlier and they were working, then they weren't, then they were and so on ... (to the extent that you could have a post with them in and working, edit it, and then they didn't work) ... nice to see them though.

@ANDARIAL, icon only shows up in advanced edit box mode, farthest right icon on the second line.

Finished re-watching Infinite Stratos earlier. I think that overall it was better on the re-watch, helped by having read the first four light novels which did help the plot a bit. It's still a fairly generic mecha-harem-comedy but at least the story doesn't seem quite as weak as it did before to me and it's still a nice no-brainer to watch. I do also still have another three or so light novels to read taking me beyond the end of the TV series too ...

Used to watch loads of this stuff... Can't remember the names too well, but watched the more mushy stuff like AIR and Aishiteruze Baby along with some more fun stuff like Yakitate Japan and Mai Hime.

So, based on these 4, can anyone recommend me something I'd like? :)

If you liked Air, then Kanon, followed by Clannad and Clannad AS

I'm personally of the opinion Kanon is better than Clannad (as a standalone); Clannad is extremely good, but it takes both season to really hit you with the full force. Toradora! would also be worth a shot.

Whilst I am very much of the opinion that Clannad + Clannad After Story beats Kanon :D

edit:
As you liked Aishiteruze Baby I would also suggest Usagi Drop.

.

Thats what I said too, just that Kanon is stronger than the first series of Clannad by itself, which is what I meant by standalone. A lot of Clannad feels like retread after Kanon and its only come After Story it really takes its own path and fully uses the time its had and the groundwork to its full advantage.

As Kanon came first I think its worth watching it first as you can see the progressions.

Where is the best place to buy anime online?

I've ordered Planetes from an online Anime retailer but I guess it wasn't in stock as it was ordered 10/10/11. I appreciate it may take several weeks though.

Just thought going to a specialist might be wiser than using the rain forest.

The first two vendors mentioned in the first post of this thread normally (for R1 stuff at least)

The Rainforest site is worth looking at to as there can be good deals on there.

Oh sorry, should have checked.

Got a reply from where I have ordered and been told that there may be some wait as the Sony Distributors burnt down during the riots (seems to be backed up by Beez Entertainment)

Finished watching Twin Spica last night.

The series is about a young girl who enrolls in a new vocational high school course to train astronauts. This is a restart of the Japanese space program after a disaster when the girl was a small child where a rocket went out of control on launch and crashed into the city where she lived. Since then she has grown up being able to see a Mr Lion who is the ghost of the pilot of the crashed rocket.

The anime is a slice of life style series which follows the girls time at the school with the friends she makes there and has flashbacks to when she was younger.

Over all I liked the series. The animation is a bit dated at times but the series is more story based than visually driven anyway. Where the series does seem a bit weak is that it was made quite early on during the run of the manga so only covers the first 25 or so chapters, (the manga is 16 volumes with the first 10 out so far in the UK (and the others coming out fairly regularly at the moment)), hence whilst it ends at the end of an arc (with a slight variation on the manga to conclude the series) it's no where near the conclusion of the overall story.

---

The other thing I watched this morning was the two TO OVAs, this time in the BD version. I prefer normal animation to the CGI based stuff here but this is pretty reasonable. From my point of view the weakness in the animation is the humans skin which (a) looks too perfect and (b) doesn't look like it has enough colour depth so the light/shadow on it looks wrong.

The stories themselves are ok, but not great, sci-fi stuff.

Picked up a second-hand Strawberry Marshmallow set last week.Just spent a lazy afternoon watching this,:)a nice easy series about the day to day life of young lolis, whoops I mean young girls.Nothing objectionable at all one for all the family if they are so inclined
What I did miss was the`comments`in the ad breaks/eye catches that were in my`older ;`versions .they always made me chuckle, sadly that group are nearly extinct although in the day they were very zesty ;)

Book 31 of MS about half way through now mate :)

Yep, Strawberry Marshmallow is a nice, silly little series with nothing really offensive for to anyone in it (although I'm sure that the elder sister has grown up to be the manager in Working! :)). Maybe that's another idea for a group of shows to watch; ones with Strawberry in the title ... you've got (at least) Strawberry Marshmallow, Strawberry Panic, I My Me Strawberry Eggs and Strawberry 100% :)

Watched / finished watching a couple of things today ...

Baka & Test season 1 ... Funimations BD release so it looked and sounded pretty good. It's a reasonable series which is fairly predictable and doesn't really have any depth or growth but it's quite a good fun watch.

Kenko Zenrakei Suieibu Umisho ... ok this is a series about a high school swim team and in particular the manager and his relationship with a very strange girl who joins the team called Amuro Ninagawa. Amuro lives on a raft with her father and is an excellent, if unorthodox swimmer. The series manages to have lots of random nudity but still be funny rather than fanservicey. Usual selection of stereotypical characters which you have in this sort of show but overall a good silly watch.

Started watching Ore-tachi Ni Tsubasa we Nai as well ... three episodes down so far and I'm getting on better with it than last time I tried (I don't think I got through the first episode then!).

I did actually watch a few Japan related live action films at the weekend; All About Lily Chou-Chou ... this was long, dull and cringingly bad at times (and not in good way) ... I'd avoid it; Kakera - A Piece of Our Lives ... not as bad as the previous film but still manages to make lesbianism boring and have uninteresting characters ... poor; Lost in Translation ... new BD release of this, I like this film (especially Billy Murray being silly in Japanese in the special features ... saying inappropriate things to waitresses etc) ... good.

I must agree, Strawberry Marshmallow was a nice little series. As long as you don't go into it expecting too much in the way of character development etc then you will enjoy it.

So far this season's worth of stuff has been a mixed bunch.

Working'!! - More of the same from the first series, so it all depends on how you felt about the first series. I enjoyed it and I must say the opening is just as good as the first series one. I wish I enjoyed all openings and endings as much as this. :p

Ben-to - I really expected for me to just watch one and no more but it has ended up being not as bad as I expected. Been carrying it on but it certainly isn't that brilliant.

Boku wa Tomodachi - Very similar level to Ben-to though I do prefer this to Ben-to.

Chihayafuru - Been really enjoying this, who knew an anime on a card game could be this entertaining. Can be quite touching at times and I find myself feeling for the characters. Well worth a watch.

Mashiro-Iro Symphony - I didn't expect much from this anime either, but this has become one of my favourites. It is a romance/love triangle style anime, which I tend to enjoy. If it is your sort of thing then I'd give it a go.

Shinryaku!? Ika Musume - I loved all the puns and jokes of the first series and I was so happy to find out the second series still has all of the same style jokes going on. Always gets me laughing through it. :D

Tamayura Hitotose - An alright anime which just seems to try and make you feel sad for the characters. I won't exactly miss it when it is finished.

Finally I have been carrying on watching both Idolm@ster and Mawaru Penguindrum. Idolm@ster is so-so, just a 'filler' anime to watch, it can have some good moments but overall nothing too special. Whereas I have really enjoyed Mawaru Penguindrum, hard to follow I find at times but it has me hooked. Oh and I don't half love those little penguins and what the get up to. Sometimes you have to rewatch a scene just so you can look at what the penguins were up to in the background. :D Overall that's about all I have been keeping with this season.
