The anime thread sequel (it's still not as good as the Manga though),

100% agreed, its when you start rewatching Toradora! you're reminded of how much fun it is, and that scene near the end of the series at the grandparents house; sticks with me as one of the best scenes of it's kind I've seen in this sort of series, real heart to heart emotional stuff.

One of the reasons I was willing to lump out the £60-70 to own it. Although it's a cliche in itself, Rie Kugiyama's performance in this show with Taiga is absolutely spot on, I've never seen her playing a Tsundere in another show (note focusing on Tsundere here as I've seen her in a few other roles which I didn't pick up on straight away as the character WASNT a Tsundere) which comes across as well, both due to the writing/story and performance. It wouldn't surprise me if this show was one of the reasons she earned the jokey title 'Queen of Tsundere'.

Brillaint Rom-com drama, and frankly its definately one of my favourites.

Macross Frontier: Sayonara No Tsubasa.

Well, you don't get more anime than Macross. What can i say? It looks fantastic. I'm always impressed with the stuff that Satelight comes out with. it certainly is a visual feast.

Some elements are different in the movies of course, but for the most part it works.

I won't say anything more as it might spoil the movie. Suffice to say if you enjoyed the series then watch the movies.

If you want to sit back for a few hours and watch the movies on a nice big screen with the sound up, it's definitely an experience to have. This must have been awesome to see at the cinema.

9/10 (I thought the music was slightly better in the first film).

I watched both the films today, (the first was a re-watch, the second for the first time).

Personally I preferred the series to the first film; it seemed to suffer a bit of the "there is plot which is missing" feel to me ... but it was still very good. The second film was very good and I preferred it over the end of the original series.

The visuals and music throughout are very, very good ... one of the tracks in particular I really like (but I can't say which one as I don't know what it's called; edit it appears at 1:45:46 in the first film where Sheryl restarts singing amongst other points). Visually I really like the space battles, especially on a larger screen (I was watching it today through the TV in the lounge instead of on a PC) ... tend to find that I'm getting into it and leaning from side to side :)

Just finished Canaan.
Was slightly surprised by the ending, it was perhaps a little more melacholy (and no that wasn't a Seitokai no Ichizon-style 'this post'll get tons of views now' reference :p) than I'd expected, not that it was a bad ending.

I suppose at least it wasn't as much of an unexpected downer as Chrno Crusade was the first time :D

Like I mentioned the other day, I'm going to go for a 'supernatural' season of anime now.
Just trying to work out where to start. I'm sure I probably have a few more lying around I've forgotten about too lol

Kara no Kyoukai, Ghost Hunt and Negima! are currently the most likely. Might go with Negima as it's a bit of a departure from Canaan and Planetes :)

I can play Zone A BDs so that's not a worry. It's a film I'd like to own on BD too as it looks fairly good in it's own way.

Then I'd say just get the US version since there isn't any need in waiting around 4 months to get a disc you can currently get (and play) from the states (although I won't have zone A BD playback ability for another week since I'm getting a toshiba BDX1200 and flashing it with the region free firmware from the Australian version, but at least getting the US DVD/BD combo pack will give me a good test subject for making sure everything is working as it should).

And planetaxel is currently the cheapest option even though after delivery and other charges (they have put in customs charges even though they say there are no other charges) the total will come to around £21 which is still cheaper then getting from either rightstuf (after delivery charges are factored in) or UP and it'll only take a few days to be delivered (even though it'll either be shipped from Canada or the States).

Interesting little story on CrunchyRoll regarding an article coming out this week in a magazine in Japan. Gives a breakdown on how much it cost to produce a 30min anime episode as of last year .... 11 million yen. (link). Apparently the per frame cost hasn't changed much in the last 30 years but the number of frames a person is expected to produce per month seems to have halved.

Finished watching the first half of Squid Girl this evening. It's an ok serious but isn't particularly clever, complex or deep.

So roughy £91K per episode. Or £1.1million for a 12 episode run. Hum, if i win euro lotto, i'll comission the studio company to do 4 more seasons of Spice & Wolf to finish it off, and two more seasons of Asobi ni iku yo! With an ending of my choosing :p

Started on my 'Halloween/Supernatural' season with Negima!

It's fairly light and doesn't take itself too seriously (I'm guessing the second season/remake is a little stronger on the characters or story?), which means it's light and easily watchable (it helps I have a softspot for the shy, intelligent stereotype of which one of the main characters is one). I'm currently about 7-8 episodes in, which means...well I've watched a surprising amount of anime in the last 2 days given my recent history, hopefully it's a sign the 'season' will get me back up to pace :p

Rob - it's a nice dream, I know I'd be willing to do the same as a personal project/semi-investment if I had money hand over fist lol :p

... (I'm guessing the second season/remake is a little stronger on the characters or story?), ...

Yep, it's darker and of a different animeation style but I much prefer it.

I don't know if I'd comission series if I had the money but there are a few I'd have to look into getting licensed.

Been watching a couple of things this evening ...

- first three episodes of Guilty Crown which I thought was very good. Interesting futuristic series and you can tell it's a Production IG jobby with an almost GitS SAC vibe going on at times.

- first three episodes of C^3 ... bit of a different change of pace, started off fairly light but got a lot darker as the episodes progressed.

Will be interesting to see how both series carry on ...

I've heard the same about CCubed. Will be taking a look at that one when the season is over.

Edit: Have just noticed Anime OnLine are currently selling the 6 singles for Shana season one for the whopping sum of £9 (for all 6, some are £0.99 others are 1.99).

I also noticed they're doing a 10disc pot luck offer for £5.
http://www.anime-on-line.com/xcart/product.php?productid=21442&cat=1083&page=1

You only get the discs in PVC labels, but could be a good way to get some 'teaser/taster' discs.

I grabbed the Shana box set whilst it was on special for £19.99. I realise I'd have been a lot more economic grabbing the singles at £9 but I read in a review that the box set came with 5.1 audio compared to the original singles having stereo, and well a fancy collectors box is always nice, especially for a six disc set. Anime On-line also told me when I contacted them the box set has 5.1, so I'm hoping that is indeed the case. The website is surprisingly basic when it comes to stuff like this!

If it turns out not to have the aforementioned audio, I might be a little miffed and ask to return and reorder however, I don't particularly fancy paying another tenner for the box alone :D

EDIT2

Well, it turns out Shana doesnt have 5.1 audio. There is a error on the set box which states 5.1 but the thinpaks themselves state stereo, which I have confirmed with disc 1.

That said I raised this with MVM, and they have completely exceeded my expectations with dealing with the situation. I had hoped for an exchange or perhaps a refund/credit for part of the difference. Tony at MVM has gone one better and guaranteed my return custom.

We do indeed owe you a big apology as this would appear to be
an art design error on the original art box set which was then carried over to
design of the thin pack collection.
*
The original was released over 2 and half years ago and, not
only was this not spotted in the (believe me) multi-layered approval process
with the licensors (who normally tell us if we have a comma in the wrong
place!), but also nobody has ever mentioned it.
*
So well spotted on your part, but I appreciate that doesn't
help you.
*
We will immediately refund your card for the full amount
paid.
Please keep the Shana collection free of charge with our
apologies.

*
The Shana license has now expired.
Since the bankruptcy of Geneon world rights have transferred
to NBC Universal.
We are trying to relicense Shana for the UK and also the
second and third series.
We will endeavour to get the details correct next time if we
succeed in relicensing.
*
Thank you for your understanding and again apologies for any
inconvenience.

Props where props is due; thats excellent customer service!

Not bad ... if only certain other UK companies were like that when they produce some incorrect ...

Finished a quick watch through Sekirei season 1 last night, (wanted something which was a fun no-brainer really which this series certainly is).

Ocean Waves?
Isn't that one of the Ghibli films that hasn't had a western release before? (let alone a TV airing?).

I'm currently watching Ghost Hunt as the forth in my accidental Halloween celebration season, I'm really enjoying Ghost Hunt, it's sort of a whodunnit (whatdunnit?), I like the mix of characters and it is reasonably spooky without being silly :)
The music choice helps a lot, and rings a bell either because of the style or because I've heard something very similar before in a horror film :)

Themed seasons can be great fun if you've got enough to choose from, especially if you can theme it around a calender event :)
Although Christmas is a hard one, as most series only have a single episode if that with any references, but there are OVA's and films (and it can be a good excuse to rewatch a favourite series).

At some point I'm probably going to do a classic mecha themed run if I get the chance - Patlabor (OVA, TV, OVA series 2, films), Macross, possibly a Gundam or two.

Of the supernatural anime listed iirc WHR is probably the best from Story and Negima is fun :)

Re Shana, that's great service from MVM :)

No, Ocean Waves has had a UK DVD release (but not a US one). It was a quite late release though (Jan '10 according to Amazon for a '93 film), I have the JP (subbed) and UK releases as the UK release took so long to appear. If I remember correctly it's a made for TV movie instead of a theatrical movie.

I like Ocean Waves personally, it's a slice of life film like Only Yesterday rather than a fantasy like Totoro etc ...

For Christmas of course you can have Ken Akamastu's Itsudatte My Santa! which is cringingly bad in places.

edit:
I like the idea of doing a themed run but I'll have to think of a theme to use and what to select to include ... watching a bit of Japanese live action stuff at the moment :)

Witch Hunter Robin was probably my next watch, that or co-oincidentally, Ghost Hunt. I'm currently on Negima! as a light entry into the 'season'.
I'm also planning to do a 'Mecha' season in the future, as I have GITS2, Patlabor,Code Geass, Macross, Gundam Zero and 8th to watch; but I might save that for a little later/early next year.

Yeah, I'm quite looking to Ocean Waves. It's been on my 'To Watch' for a little while, and this will be a perfect excuse to watch it, providing I'm not stuck at work.

Almost finished my run of the first Negima!
Its been a light and fun beginning to my supernatural season although the sudden darker turn at the end of the series kinda caught me by surprise.

Im off to London today for the no less geeky Final Fantasy concert at the Royal Albert but will probably be moving on to Witch Hunter Robin tomorrow.
