The anime thread sequel (it's still not as good as the Manga though),

For me Tamayura Hitotose is one of the best series this season, (a season which doesn't have many good, stand out, series). I don't find it a series which is trying to make the watcher feel sad ... instead it's a supposed to just be a completely non-stressing, relaxing watch along the same lines as a certain Undine centred series we cannot name.

If you haven't seen Guilty Crown or Phi Brain you may want to give them a try though.

Just goes to show how you can't go off a single persons view on an anime but instead have to really watch it for yourself to see. Though I do enjoy the opening to Tamayura Hitotose, the band that does that song also does some other good songs, which strangely some are in English.

If I get a chance I will have a look at those two, though having just got the new Edler Scrolls: Skyrim I am not sure I will find the time anytime soon. :p

Had a few random bits arrive today:
FMP:TSR (Bluray) - the new edition's meant to be RegionA/B joint so I couldn't resist for £15. The upscale from the bits I've seen, is still far superior to the original DVDs as well, even if it is only an upscale. 5.1 Audio in both English/Japanese, as you'd perhaps expect a Kyoto Animation license.

Gun X Sword - £10 off MVM's DotW
Not entirely sure on this one, but at £10 I thought it was worth a shot, as reviews are OK and if I turn out not to like it too much, I'm sure one of my brothers will like it. It'll also fit handily into my upcoming Mecha season.

Also grabbed one of MVM's current 10disc potluck's when I ordered Gun, as I figured at £5 might be a good way to trial series; and if there's nothing I want then I can trade/give them away.

My 10 discs were quite a random collection:
Shakugan no Shana vol 6
Blade of the Immortal vol 1
Witchblade vol 3
The Slayers Next vol 1
The Slayers Vol 2
Desert Punk Vol 1
Ergo Proxy Vol 2
Starship Operators Vol 3
Romeo X Juliet Vol 2
Elemental Gelade Vol 2

Not all of these will appeal to me, and some I've seen, but they do make good trade/swap discs, and good testers for new series :)

Might grab another pack or two of these potlucks next time I order from MVM if they're still £5 each.

I watched Redline last night, having pre-ordered it without knowing much because

A: My younger brother who is not generally an Anime fan was raving about it.

B: Several reviews/articles at places like ANN and Tor.com

And all I can say is OMG.
It is great, very stylised, stonking great animation, interesting characters and designs (many would be right at home in a classic 2000AD), a nice story/setting, and some really good music.

I want to watch it again already.

I have to admit I don't have much of an interest in Redline, mainly from seeing trailers/reviews.

It's the very stylisation and design, (not a fan of the classic 2000AD sort of things), that's putting me off ...

It's taken some time as I've been watching it with my brother, and work etc have conflicted, but finally finished the last few episodes of Planetes this evening. Have to agreed with the previous recommendations; it's a good show.

Likeable characters; and a plot that really doesn't go where you expect it to a lot of the time, refusing to conform to the cliche'd expected events at many points (not to say there were none).

It looked fairly good, sound was reasonable if nothing special, and nicely, the story didn't 'forget' characters.

Even at the ending, every character I remembered from the show made the ending somewhere. The only downside was, the plot wasn't the sort that grabbed you, and pulled you into shooting through the show, as although there was an overplot, there was a lot of individual show material as well, which whilst not filler; slowed the overall plot development down somewhat.

Personally, I think it's a shame there's not more decent Sci-Fi out there, whether high futuristic, or contemporary, reality-based near future as in this show.

It's all about the 'Ai'!

I wouldn't call the show a favourite, but I do think it's a solid 8.5, maybe even 9/10 show. It doesn't do MUCH wrong.

Been watching a couple of things over the last few days ...

Oretachi ni Tsubasa wa Nai ... I remember watching the first couple of episodes when it first came and thinking that it didn't make much sense and the series does carry on in much the same way with several, seemingly unconnected, streams carrying on during each episode. It's only in the last couple of episodes that things come together and start being vaguely understandable as to what is going on. Overall the series was reasonable, not great, but an ok watch. The one thing that was a bit annoying was the sheer number of fanservice pantsu shots throughout the show which were completely un-needed.

Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka ... this was quite an amusing take on the zombie genre with instead of having the main characters fighting zombies the main character is a zombie. The characters were quite amusing and the plot didn't try and over-reach itself in the limited number of episodes. It was a good fun watch and I see a second series has been announced for next April.

Hi guys, this might be of interest to some of you, as I know the subject has come up more than once.

Richer Sounds are currently doing the Toshiba BDX1200 instore only for £49.99. Now not only is that reasonably cheap for a branded Bluray player - here's the kicker, you can make it DVD and BD multiregion by loading the Aussie firmware; no hardware modification or expensive alternatives necessary. 5 year warranty on top £60 total.

Couldn't help myself at that price, as it means I'm not limited to watching any BD's I might import (tempted to grab Dissapearance NOW) on my PC, but its a cracking price for a standalone non-supermarket brand player anyway :)

I've tested my one this evening, firmware update was extremely easy and quick, it's reasonably quiet, loads quickly, changing regions is quick and painless and the multi-region is definately working. US DVDs are playing fine through the machine now DVD region is set to 0, and I can change BD Region to C, have BDs recognise the player is region C (and refuse to play as they're region A/B only) then switch back to A/B and have them work fine.

Grabbed one for another one of my mates as well, as the shop had 4 in stock right now. He didn't have a BD unit, so the fact it's multiregion was a bonus.
I don't know what stocking is like around the country, as it seems its still a current offer, although my branch didnt have them on display, only out the back for people who'd read the website/pamphlets. Figured it might be a worthwhile buy for someof the rest of us here :)

I actually got that player from best buy last week for exactly the same price (it isn't listed on their site anymore so it may be that they've run out of stock although it doesn't matter anyway since their closing up) and it's a pretty good runner plus there's the lack of OTT operational noise (I could literally hear the laser moving on my old philips BDP3000 when it was dealing with PTP discs like the first volume of genshiken and the k-on DVD's).

And after reading about the newest list of releases for February and March I'm dropping the DVD release of squid girl as media blasters have announced a complete season 1 BD collection to be released mid March (hopefully their blu-ray cases are better then the DVD cases they used for this series).

Well it's payday next Friday and my Birthday the week after.

Anyone fancy recommending me some American BDs to look for?( well don't have to be American but reasonably priced (compared to JP standard and with English subs)

Already on the list:
Angel Beats
Fullmetal Panic and Fumoffu
Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya

I already have
Claymore
Spice and Wolf 1+2
Evangelion 1.11 and 2.22
GITS 1+2

*********

On another note picked up Paranoia Agent off MVM as it'll fit into my supernatural season and I've been meaning to check out more of Kon's works.
Couldn't say no for a Tenner.

US BDs ... Hmmm ... Ones which I have that seem pretty good on BD so far ....

Soul Eater (Meister and Weapon collections) ... currently I'm about 3/4 of the way through this
FMA:B ... with careful timing you can normally pick this up at around $20 per set on Amazon US in one of their sales
Clannad ... Amazon US were selling this at $49.99 the other day
Rideback
Baka and Test

If you are feeling a bit more adventurous than 5cm/s has just come out on BD in it's Globlal edition in JP.

Well it's not so much they need to be American, rather that just tends to be more reasonably priced than JP :)
I'm actually willing to look wider, the only REAL requirements are I can get hold of them, and they're not something silly like £150+ hehe

And they would be more reasonably priced considering the Japanese clannad BD collection costs around £300 and you can get the US release for around £40 if you know where to look.

The 5cm/s Global Edition BD is in the £55-60 + shipping etc range, you can also get the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Movie 1st regular edition BD in a similar price range too.

Clannad well ... current rate for the JP boxsets is ~£400-500 + shipping so <$50 is pretty resonable value even if the package isn't as nice ;)

...

Got something nice Hanasaku Iroha related the other day; saw this posted on another forum:

On October 9th, there was a Bonbori Festival held, and one of the items that was sold was a couple of production material books. One was a 72 page character design book and the other was a 176 page set of background images.

Today, the official site announced that this set would be sold to the general public, but there would be a limited amount of sets produced (5,000 to be exact) and they would only sell them in specific stores.
Well one of the stores which got it in was Ami Ami who ship internationally so I slapped in a quick pre-order for it. Received the books yesterday .... really, really nice set. Both books are in a stiff plastic sleeve and are printed on good, thick glossy paper. The character design book is excellent with loads of design images of all the different characters and the background book is even better with many, many images, some with scaling notes, of practically every angle used in the show at the main locations and more images from the other locations too. :D

Might take a look at the 5cm collection; as its meant to look excellent. And yeah, can't really complain on the Clannad price by comparison; just a shame that doesn't come with AS :)

Edit:

Hard to know what to rate the series really; as in terms of pacing and plotting, .[you're almost looking at two different shows with the same characters and settings. Coming away from the series, I'm left with the debateable feeling it's a series, that paced as it was, both needed more than one cour to develop in the way it did; but ultimately didn't need 2 cours, and thus a lot of early material could be taken as virtual filler, although it does get you used to the feeling of the environment and setting at that point in the story; especially should you have been watching it weekly on TV (bearing in mind it's 26 episode run would take half a year to complete).

It must also be argued, that ultimately this is a plot, rather than character driven show. The characters themselves are somewhat stereotypical, although are used well.
You've got the new 'guy' (although in this case, Robin's a girl), the more serious ace, the hotshot younger team member, the blonde airhead, the tech ace, and the older woman who more or less holds things together aside from the bosses.

The main plot/crux of the show didn't really get going, bar some minor build up, aclimatisation and foreshadowing 'til approximately half way through the series, somewhere near episode 12; and up 'til that point, the core plot is painstakingly slow in developing, almost glacially to the point I got pneumonia watching it[/b]. After the over plot gets moving, the show, no doubt about it, gets a lot better.

By this point, the world is established, and suddenly there's pacing, direction, changes in the story and what you believe peoples roles in the story to be, and overall, it did need SOME of the buildup those first 12 episodes provided, but ultimately I think it should have been cut back to say 8, and characters like Harry; well they didn't really seem to have a purpose except to act as a filler character to provide someone to look at to take up time, until it was time for important stuff to happen.
In this sense, compared to the norm, this isn't a series that loses its way later in the series, arguably it's a series that FINDS its way later in the series.

It's not a bad series, but I do think in hindsight, it needs rating in two halves:
The first half -
Good introductions, and acclimatises you to the characters and setting; however ultimately it's dragged out for too long in my opinion, and some of the material felt substantially like filler to justify the 2 cour.
6/10 (decent but not great)

Second half -
The show really moves forward, some twists and turns in the plot for good or for bad. Pacing is far stronger; and there is a far more coherant story arc to follow, compared to the 'of the week' nature of the early episodes. 'Filler' dissapears.
8/10

Overall, I'm going to be generous and say 8/10, I think perhaps 7.5 might be more accurate.
The first half of the show could be considered TOO slow at times; and I'm sure has put more than a few viewers who'd possibly enjoy the second half of the show. This isn't an issue that can solely be attributed to this series alone, however I feel this series could have been far better if they'd simply paced it more evenly, and used the time they had more effectively to develop the characters.

Watched a couple of things over the last few days, (had the end of last week off to do various bits and pieces including sorting out my electronic media) ...

Soul Eater ... both the Meister and Weapon collections on BD. Man this was long ... 51 episodes and there were times when my attention tended to wander. But overall it was a fun, high octane, watch. Quite a bit of action but a reasonable amount of story around it along with fairly interesting characters. The art style is a bit different from most of the stuff I've been watching recently but once I got used to it the series was pretty enjoyable.

Rideback ... re-watch of this on the US BD release. I'd call it quite an interesting series overall although there is times when it feels like they could have slowed down the plot slightly and had a longer series with more depth. The animation is quite well done in the series capturing the complicated movements of the ridebacks very well and giving them a sense of being more real.

Also slipped in a quick re-watch of Maria-sama ga Miteru season 1 ... just 'cos I like it ;)

Currently about half way through a re-watch of Hanasaku Iroha.

I'm guessing each of those two SE collections was half the series?

Ironically, your feedback from Rideback sounds like its paced almost in the opposite manner to my thoughts on WHR :D
Kinda glad to have finished WHR to be honest. It's not a bad series, but the pacing did make it a more difficult watch than it should have been, and it's probably not a series I'll watch again for this reason.

I also wasn't amazed by the character design for Robin, I'm not fond of the look, and actually prefered the characters look far more when she had her hair down. Also the artists never seemed to be able to decide quite what colour her hair should be, and it varied from almost blonde to dark brown throughout the series haha

I'm of tw...well, plenty of minds on what to watch next. I've had two very contrasting series as my opening to my Supernatural Season.
Not sure what to watch next:
Ghost Hunt
Kara no Kyoukai
Ghost Hound
Air
Chevalier D'Eon
Puella Madoka
Negima?! (I'm thinking this more seems like the perfect ending to the season, having started with Negima!)

There's also Paranoia Agent due on my doorstop in the next few days which should fit nicely into the season based on the series' genre listing.

Edit:
They're not mentioned in the OP, but been looking at Planetaxel a lot these last few weeks after seeing them recommended elsewhere.
They're not always quite as cheap as say R.S for an individual item, when you do the $:£, but the postage and packaging seems cheaper over all at about £1.80 per disc, there's no customs risk, and the fact they list the regions of the discs they sell is kinda handy. They're meant to be fairly sharpish with shipping too; has anyone else used them?

They might be a good 'local' alternative to UP1 at times, and seem to stock quite a lot of anime.

With Soul Eater yes, each set is half the total series, (ones 25 episodes, the other 26 from memory).

I can't say I've heard of Planetaxel, other than maybe a mention here in the past (by demonix I think).

It's dangerous. I just went for a random wander through the BD section and ended up with about 11 sets of discs in my basket and about £260 of stuff later lol. (Clannad works out about £37 inc etc. RightStuf is ~£42 before I even consider the shipping costs, and UP1's over £50!)

They do BDs/DVDs, might be worth a look :)
Not trying to sell them, just as another alternative for people around here to consider, as they seem reasonably priced on some of the US series collections compared to the prices I'm used to seeing at RS/UP1 etc. If I do order from them next month I'll give some feedback.

The fact you're not having to pay for international shipping, and they ship from inside the EU to avoid customs holdups and costs makes them a tempting prospect over RS.

If you do use them then please do give us some feedback. I'm pre-ordered, for the most part, up until around March at the moment but after that I'm pretty fluid.

My concern at the moment would be whether they can reliably source limited editions given that they are a general, not specialist, retailer. That and whether they'll ship to a non-cardholder address.
