The anime thread sequel (it's still not as good as the Manga though),

Looking for some suggestions on new movies/comics to start my tastes revolve around.

Ghost in the shell
Appleseed
Armitage
Battle Angel Alita

Recently started reading the Alita comics and i love them, really getting into the graphics novels, finished vol. 1, am starting vol. 2 now and love the story, direction.

I'm not familiar with most of those unfortunately, that said from a quick wiki on them they seem to be quite Cyberpunky, perhaps try Texhnolyze and Serial Experiments Lain.

Also, going on the fact you like GITS and Appleseed, it wouldn't be a far stretch to suggest perhaps you'd enjoy Mecha shows, so perhaps try out the like of Gundam 00, or Code Geass.

There's also steampunk like Fullmetal Alchemist.

Don't sound so surprised;)

Skeeter, I think I remember Arc (it was on Sci-fi along with Eva, Nadesico and a couple of others), but can't remember episode 13, I may rewatch it as I think I've still got it somewhere:)

I just got back from a local model show and managed to pick up so Macross models, they're not great (or in great condition), but it's the first time I can ever remember seeing them.

I got a VF1 in Valkyrie mode, and Gerwalk mode, a SDF and a couple of others (I got them partly because I like the series/models, and partly because the money goes towards one of the model clubs).

Just finished watching the new tekken movie, absolutely amazing, enjoyed it thoroughly.

Where did you go to watch it?

I went and saw it last night too in Birmingham. Was average I'd say, with the earlier fight scenes being the better ones. Could have been a hell of a lot worse and the dubbing was better than I expected. There was a little fan service with zooming to legs etc but it wasnt bad.

I saw it at the phoenix picture house in oxford. Haha yeah it's hard not to notice all the leg shots... The story line overall was pretty cheesy I'll admit but i still enjoyed most of the action scenes. :p

Werewolf, its best if you rewatch from maybe the start of it just to get the feeling of them both and their relationship. Still a powerful emotional episode tho imo even if you would watch just that ep straight away.

nice slice of life anime ,hope it keeps up my interest .decided to splash out on a zoom tablet from ocuk the other day mainly to read manga on.this is also good for checking the replies to this thread too :-) :-)

Would you say Hanasaku Iroha is similar to anything? I am trying to work out whether I will enjoy it.

Hanasaku Iroha is one of my favourites from this year, (helped by the various OPs and EDs which sounded very good to me). The characters and visuals were very good and it had a good interesting story. But what to compare it to would be difficult, I wouldn't liken it to Love Hina ... yes it is set in a traditional inn in a hot springs town but it is not a harem comedy. You could say that it has elements of Working as it mostly takes place in a working environment (although it's not as comedic as that series) ... you called also say it has elements of Nana in that a main character has to learn how to get along in a different environment to that which she grew up in (without the emo angst of that series).

Over all it has nice characters, good art, good music, some light comedy (at a level in keeping with the story and setting), and a good strong story which runs through consistently throughout the series. There is a little service at times but nothing to cringe-worthy. The characters come over as believable and you can empathise with them easily so that by the end of the series who care about them and want to what is going to happen in the future ...

Anyway .... watched a few things this weekend ...

Planetes ... re-watch of this. We all know what this is so I won't say any more.

Loups=Garous ... US BD release of this film. The film is basically about a bunch of kids in a high tech future city who find that other children are disappearing and that they may be targetted and hence have to do something about it to survive. I found this a pretty good film in general although at times it did feel a bit shallow in places, (it felt that there were things being skimmed over at times), and the ending wasn't particularly strong. Overall it was ok though and looks good on BD.

Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto ... had this for a while and tended to ignore it as it seemed so like Someday's Dreamers from the description (which I have the DVD release of), which isn't surprising as it's actually the second series of that title (aka Someday's Dreamers: Summer Skies). But finally got around to watching it over the weekend. Yes it starts out very much like SD in concept, you have a high school girl coming to Tokyo in the summer in order to study with a Mage and the Magic Dept to become a Mage herself. But this does diverge a lot and has a definite plot of it's own and concentrates more on the girl's interaction with her classmates rather than doing training with her teacher. The art style is interesting with a lot of it done as photos of real places with animation placed over the top ... this can look pretty bad but here it works quite well. It is a simple series with a bittersweet ending and I quite enjoyed watching it.

Currently watching Bleach at the moment, only on episode 9 at the moment. But it has been pretty good.
After I catch up with Bleach I may try to watch soul eater if I can get into it properly (got up to about 6-7).

I cant really think of a show the same as Hanasaku iroha, eve no jinkan is the closest thing I can think of.

I think the best shows this year which I would recommend are:

Steins;Gates - Originally dropped this after 2 eps then gave it another go later in the year, a few more eps in and I couldn't stop watching but I guess thats why it has 9.15 on anidb!
Madoka - You'll either love it or hate it. I'll not forget that two month wait for them to broadcast the two final eps due to the quake D:

Nearly made it to ep 500 in one piece, taken some catching up to say I only started watching it earlier in the year! Much better than bleach or naruto in the long run.

Personally I found Madoka over-rated ... it's not a bad watch and it's an interesting take on its genre but I don't find it as good as some people have made out personally.

Finished Mayo Chiki this evening. Reasonably good, fun, watch. Nothing really unexpected (well actually there was ... I was expecting the main characters mother to turn up at some point and beat the **** out of him) but generally amusing without trying to be clever.

Also zipped through the first season of Morita-san wa Mukuchi which is interesting in that the main character does really talk at all. Kind of amusing but the short (3min) episodes get a bit irritating after a while.

So I watched the 5cm/s Global Edition BD this afternoon. The film does look very, very nice on BD with cherry blossom and snow scenes benefiting from the higher resolution. The film itself is ... very Japanese ... with a simple, fairly melancholy, plot which when you expect that things will happen they just don't ...

Extras include Voices of a Distant Star and She and Her Cat, both of which are subtitled in English (and the former dubbed as well) and a long interview with Makoto Shinkai about the making of the film . There is also a slim booklet included, mostly in English, which gives an introduction from the director and little other bits of information about the film.

I personally found 5cm/s very overrated, yes lovely to look at but it was like paint drying.
