The anime thread sequel (it's still not as good as the Manga though),

What got me into Anime was watching it on Channel 4 and the Sci-Fi channel.

Watching Guyver (The OVA series) and flims like Cyber City Oedo 808, Battle Angel, Dominion Tank Police, Fist of the North Star and Akira and many others I guess. Guyver was and is really only Anime series I ever collected, I have the full 12 episodes on VHS in the loft somewhere. They don't make Anime like they did in the late 80's and 90's anymore, not to say some of the current stuff isn't awesome, but back then a lot of the shows was gritty and dark.

But it's only the last 5+ or more years when I had a PC where I really been able to get into Anime again.

Pretty much the same here.

The "late license" slot on C4 in the 90's, with 3x3 eyes, legend of the 4 kings etc, then Bubblegum Crisis on Sci-fi, and my (now brother in law) used to invite my younger brother and I round to watch stuff with him - Ghost in the Shell, Blue Sonnet (anyone remember that?), and Psychic Cop (or something similar).

I really got into in about 2000 when not only did I actually have some money to spare to buy anime, but had a computer and the internet so I could actually order it to be delivered easily, including from abroad.

Beanbandit, I remember those Superplay mags (still got a few here somewhere), they used to do "chibi" and manga versions of some games characters etc in them from memory.

I put in my pledge for Kickstarter last night, only a basic on though due to finances at the moment.
I think they're halfway there already now.

Steins Gate is rather good, but picks up almost exactly half way through :)

I watched FMA:Brotherhood over the weekend (well the last of it), and really enjoyed it, it was worth the wait :) (I waited for the UK release, then held off buying it on DVD when Manga stopped the blu-ray releases).

Aye, Animeigo cannot usually ship to the UK as their licensing and retail are part of the same unit basically (effectively unlike Rightstuff who normally specifically licence stuff through their subsidiaries and are a store who happen to do some licensing, Animeigo are a licensor/distributor first with a vestigial store).
The same is/was true of all the US anime licensing companies who had a retail option on their site, they were all restricted to the US and Canada for shipping in my experience as whilst they can turn a blind eye to what a separate company does, they can't do that with their own direct sales unit.

With BGC I think they have "rest of world" rights for it so selling to the UK/Aus etc isn't an issue, and with Yawara I think they ran into the problem that the sales from the first set didn't reach enough to let them risk doing the second :( (something they look to be trying to avoid with the kickstarter for BGC, and I suspect if it works may use again for other stuff).

On a different note, I watched the K-on! movie a couple of nights ago, and loved it :)

If you don't mind a slightly older animation style (but still good thanks to it being an OVA), you could always try the original Bubblegum Crisis :)

My brains a bit frazzled at the moment so no other suggestions really coming forward apart from possibly Black Lagoon.

Read or die?[/edit]

And on different but marginally related note, for anyone that's interested the Bubblegum Crisis blu-ray kickstarter is in it's last day or so ($50 dollars, plus $10 shipping and any customs fees gets you a HD copy of one of the best OVA's ever ;)).

BGC is definitely one of my favourites (and the music is oddly enjoyable:)), not sure how people who are used to more modern animation will take it, but the quality is still good although the style is a little dated.

I've got a pledge in on the kickstarter despite having it in the pink box, and blue box DVD sets already (and I'm fairly sure I had at least a couple of episodes on vhs).

And going by the kickstarter update this morning, it looks likely that the BGC set will have 3 BD50's for content, as the head guy (and his wife*) at Animeigo have said that they'll pay for the authoring etc of the third disk themselves despite it not quite reaching the point at which they'd already said they would do that :)

I'm slightly excited about HD BGC, possibly more so than I really should be given I've seen it so many times (it's one of the first anime I remember seeing, and I've watched it about once a year or more for the past 10-15 years).

*Who I assume is also an anime fan

I've barely managed to watch any anime recently, although I did watch Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail, which was very good, it makes me want to watch the first two seasons again :)

I'm going to try and watch Porco Russo, or Fam the Silver Wing (pt1) in the next few days, but it's hard finding the time (my current sleep pattern is not conductive to watching anime).

Finally got time to sit and watch some anime (it seems like weeks since that happened), so ended up watching Last Exile: Fam the Silver Wing, which so far (up to the end of set 1), looks really quite good, maybe not quite as good as the original, but pretty close so far.

And it looks lovely in HD :)

At last, it looks like Place Promised and Voice of a Distant star will be out next month :D
I think I've had them on pre-order for about a year now :) (and Eva 3.33 out in March).

Does anyone have any anime related new years resolutions?
I've sort of decided I'm going to try and read a volume of manga a week - brought about partly because I've got a bunch of manga to read (Love Hina, Genshiken and CCS omnibus's), and want to finally get round to reading the AMG manga (Up to volume 10, 11 and 12 on order).

I'm also going to try and cut down on my Anime DVD buying this year...

Those are nice :)

Rightstuf currently have a sale on for a lot of their DVD's/Blu-rays and merchandise, including their Lithographs.
I may have gone a little wrong...

I've also been starting to try and pick up the Robot series of GN's that Range Murata did, unfortunately not only are they long out of print in English, but it seems we only ever got to about volume 4, whilst the French have up to volume 7 or 8.

I also bought a few Kassette boxes from Ikea earlier, so I'm going to try and make a bit of a start on sorting my collection of DVD's and Blu-rays out again, it's been years since I did it.
My thought is to sort them roughly by name into boxes, with things like the whole Tenchi and Ranma series in their own boxes where possible.
I bought 8 boxes to start with, 4 were promptly appropriated by my brother when he saw them, and I think I'm going to need another 10-20 minimum!

well to kick start my anime blu-ray buying for this year I've gone and order Gurren Lagann - Ultimate Edition (Blu-Ray) off amazon uk.

I'm tempted by that, but looking at the cost, and the fact I've got the original UK release (with light up drill pendant!;)) I can't really justify it, especially as it's not one of my favourite shows (something like BGC I'm willing to triple dip on, same with Gunbuster, but Gurren Lagann not so much).

Ah, I didn't realise it had the movies, that makes it a better price wise :)

I guess the silly thing is, that I didn't used to think twice about paying ~100 for the separate volumes that would make up a release like Gurren Laggan :)
I've got slightly spoiled for anime being a little cheaper :)

I sort of folded on Gurren Laggan in the end, I've pre-ordered it from Amazon and figure I can cancel it if needed.

I spent about an hour yesterday making a start on sorting the disc sprawl that is all over my extended desk, I'm going to have to go to Ikea and pick up another 8 packs of Kassette boxes by my reckoning...

Summer Wars and TGWLTT are amazingballs!

I'd agree there, although Wolf Children is in my "to watch" pile :)

I really need to try and get the time to watch more of my backlog, but it seems like i'm forever running behind/low on sleep as it is :(

I had a bit of good news a couple of weeks back so treated myself to some goodies, namely a few lithographs from TRSI when they were on offer (going to order some frames on Tuesday when I can get to the market), and then spotted some model kits on Anime-on-line which tickled my fancy and I couldn't resist as they were quite cheap (a 1/8th Belldandy and Holybell resin kit, a Belldandy in red dress kit, Belldandy and Grampus kit, and a Pretty Sammy kit - ~£80 for the lot).
The Holybell and Belldandy one looks to be pretty big (the box is about 12x6x4, and it looks to have huge wings), but unfortunately I suspect it'll be ages before I get round to making any of them :(
Besides anything else I'm going to want to get a display cabinet prior to building them, as they are going to be big and fragile.
