The anime thread sequel (it's still not as good as the Manga though),

Here's a quick challenge : Can anyone find a PAL Region 2 (Or Region 0/Free) box set of Chuuka Ichiban (Cooking Master Boy). I have had a quick look with my limited google-fu but can only find NTSC and Far East local ones. I love the series having seen it some years ago at a friend's house, and would love to own it.

Sorry for DP, but so people realise there IS a new post, I noticed today Sendit are doing a LOT of anime on offer to celebrate Manga's 20th anniversary it seems.

http://www.sendit.com/dvd/offers/manga-s-20th-anniversary.list?sortOrder=price&sortReverse=false

DVDs from £1.49+P&P :)

I've not had a massive route through yet (partially as I'm close to skint and dont want to find more temptations) but looks to be some good deals on films etc.
Girl Who Leapt Through Time is one of the £1.49 DVDs, Sky Crawlers on BD is £4.99 etc.

Hellsing Ultimate for 1.49 each, yes please!!! :)

Can't see any evidence that it was licensed for UK, or even US, release so finding it on PAL R2 DVD is not likely. Only copies on the popular auction site are dodgy Malaysian knockoffs, (52 episodes on 2 DVDs .... really?)

There's a couple of boxsets listed in the marketplace on Amazon JP; they'll be R2 but won't have any English (and are expensive and would probably require being sent through a third party service to get them internationally). I haven't looked at them closely enough to see if they even cover the entire series.

Finished B Gata H Kei earlier on Funimations BD release. At first impression the story of this series makes you think that it'll be really bad but actually it's quite amusing. Despite the main character spending the entire series wanting to get laid there is remarkably little real fanservice (until the final episode ... which even then it isn't that bad).

Most of the time it the usual selection of misunderstandings which this sort of series normally generates. It's hardly original but it's amusing none the less.
Oddly enough i was going to ask about this, saw a trailer on a dvd and thought mmmm not sure about this.
What was the dub like?fair/bad or mehh?

Its actually not a bad series.
The long and short of it is, Yamada sets out with the goal to..errr...basically be a ****, guided by her own personal [sex] goddess.
As she's actually never 'done' it, she decides to set her sights low, and start with one guy. Trick is they both begin to actually like each other, so the series charts the state of thier relationship from acquaintance to actually getting to know each other, and some of the other characters surrounding the pair. Him trying to get to know her, and her trying to accept he's not as low as she initially wrote him off as, and that he actually might, just might, be the right guy.

Yamadas plan from word go obvious isn't taking off well. :)

I can't comment on the dub (as I haven't listened to it at all). As Alex says the series isn't bad, it's nothing really new and hits the various usual events that you'd expect and the characters "problems" are those which we normally see in any anime which involves a relationship, but it's better than a cursory glance at a plot summary might suggest and it's a reasonably fun watch ... I do like the ED too.

Finished watching The World God Only Knows (season 1) on Sentai's BD release this evening. Hmmmm ...

So we have a clutsy female demon coming to earth to capture escaped souls which are hiding in young girls hearts. She needs a ladies man to help her woo the girls to release the souls and hence make them recapturable ... unfortunately who she contracts with is only a ladies man in the "gal game" player sense ... in real life, not so much ... comedy thus ensues ...
I'm split with this series ... the first half of it is reasonable, for the most part, up until the end of the Kanon arc, (which was my favourite of the series). After that the series really dragged for me and I did struggle with keeping interest at times. Although the waterfall of books animation during one of the later episodes was very good and looked great on BD. Overall I would say that the series was ok but could have been better ... I see what they were trying to do but I don't think they made enough of the Elsie the demon's character at times and the pacing felt off to me.

Started watching Tatami Galaxy this evening on Beez's release ... watched two episodes and wow it needs a lot of concentration to keep up with it (lots of fast dialogue = lots of quick subs reading). Nice OP though.

Tatami Galaxy is another favourite of mine. It definitely wont be to everyone's taste, but I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for something smart and unusual.

The dialogue gets easier to keep up with, I don't think the other episodes are quite as fast as the first. Plus you get used to it.

Just been catching up with some of this seasons stuff.

Rinne no Lagrange - I was a bit harsh on this at first, but i'm quite likiing it so far. It hasn't wowed me so far as far as mech animes go but it has plenty of time to shine. I'm optimistic that something nice will come out of this.

Papa no Iu Koto - It's quite funny at times but i can see some of the steoerotypical gags getting quite old. Still i'll keep watching this.

Inu x Boku - Quite charming in a silly little way. The characters are all stereotypes but it knows that and uses them accordingly. I think this could have quite a few laughs with some serious tones thrown in.

Guilty Crown - I think the damage has already been done with this series, the first cour was all wrong and the entire plot was set up pretty poorly. That being said i really do love the character desigs and it does look very pretty so it keeps me coming back each week. The second opening is pretty good as well. This could have been fantastic if the plot had had some fine tuning for some pretty obvious flaws. It's the problem of vague ideas and storytelling that seems to plague anime.

Thanks for mentioning Katawa Shoujo Saitrix, I've been playing it in 'safe mode' and it's actually quite charming in it's own way.
I used to be an avid reader a few years back, and although I don't tend to read as much anymore, largely because of time reasons, but visual novels sort of cross the border between gaming and reading, both of which I enjoy, and kinda remind me of the old game books I used to have when I was in my early teens, so they're kinda nostalgic in another sense as well.

What can I say, for a free Visual Novel, so far I don't really have any major criticisms, although I do wish there were slightly more choices (and an option to turn the res up, but it honestly doesn't look THAT bad at 1080 with the aspect ratio preserved), that said I was surprising how long it was. Just playing through one of the routes took me about 4-5 hours I guess (excluding times where I had it minimised or AFK), so when I realise at least 2/3 of those is probably individual to each path, it makes you realise how much time and effort gets put into these things.

It's a shame some of the other biggies like Kanon aren't officially translated, as it'd be nice to see the story they couldn't fit into the shows.

***************
On the terms of series, currently watching through Ookami Kakushi, it's, frankly probably a little painfully average, but I've seen worse, and nothing about it is offending me per se so I'll likely finish, its not a long show.

Also managed to pick up some sales items:
Redline DVD/BD double pack for £13.99, along with Sound of the Sky (Beez) as I had it heavily recommended to me elsewhere, and now seemed a good time to get it before it became unavailable. Gantz also came up on MVMs DotW so thought I'd give that a shot as it seems popular and I like Sci-Fi.
Also got round to ordering Bamboo Blade for approx £16 the set, I remember it being recommended here previously, but I'd been absolutely skint at the time and unable to afford it.

Play's sale seems to be covering more anime than it used to, so might be worth taking another look.

I'm reminded today why I'm can't be overly sad that Bandai are going to be not releasing disks soon ... watched Towards the Terra, which is quite a nice sci-fi series, and I was quite enjoying it until the last two episodes ... which not only don't play (judder to a halt) but won't even rip ...

Alexrose1uk,

Out of interest which person/route have you done? First time I did it I went with Emi and I am replaying it (nearly finished too, now in safe mode :p) with Lilly. Preferring Lilly's story to Emi's.

Edit - What I really want is this type of game but on a tablet, would be perfect for it.

I went for Shizune first. Apparently its one of the most tutorial like in many ways, but also one of the ones where the story is more based around whats implied, hinted and revealed and what this says about past stories than some of the others which are more overt.

As there was only one major choice in that route, compared to lots in the others, I've seen both the good and bad ends....the bad end really kinda made me feel a bit. Impressively powerful in several ways when you think it back through with everything else you've learned, wheres Shizune's 'good' ending is far more ambiguous, although ending on a much more positive note.

Thinking of going for Hanako/Lilly next (although not necessarily this weekend as I've got an addictive personality, and I'll end up finishing it in one long 4 hour run or whatever if Im unlucky), as I've heard they're one of the more fun to go through in terms of being impressively written (and effectively this is an interactive storybook)

Higurashi and Steins Gate are both out on the Apple App store.

I've got Higurashi on my ipad but Steins Gate is about £20+ compared to a few quid for each episode of Higurashi.

There are a few more as well from what i remember.

I guess you can read Japanese then?

I would buy Steins;Gate but it would be useless to me in Japanese. I would also kill for Fate/Stay Night or Tsukihime on iPad :D

Higurashi is available in seperate English and Japanese releases. I've got both versions of the first episode on my Ipad, i think the english one was free, not sure.

Steins Gate is Japanese Only sadly :(.

Although i may pick it up to practice :).

Steins Gate £24.49
http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/steins-gate/id454136236?mt=8

Some of the titles by the same company are on there as well, but they are Japanese only also.

Doesn't look like it stops just there either! :) For anyone learning Japanese in this thread, it's probably a fun way to learn and enjoy yourself at the same time :).
