The anime thread sequel (it's still not as good as the Manga though),

Glad my order came when it did then for EF, shame as they were always good when I used them.

I stopped using them a few months ago after I tried to order the second and third volumes of K-On! on blu-ray, and the order wouldn't process because of problems with their standard checkout system with the only option being paypal which I wouldn't want to do because if their mucked up currency rates and charges (they only made that clear after I put my card details in and went to pay for the order which is stupid).

Because (a) there isn't the demand for them (b) they were probably not authored in HD so they would require extra authoring work (c) authoring BDs is still relatively expensive and (d) the current license holders probably don't have a license which allows them to do so (either because their license is too old to specify they can or because the licensor wont allow it as they fear reverse importation damaging any release of that type they want to do in the future in Japan).

I'd settle for a DVD boxset (or at least one thats still available) :(

I believe that nozomi/rightstuf did state that it wasn't economically viable to do blu-ray releases at the moment which is why they're not releasing nadesico on that format (but a remastered release alongside an extra item that hasn't been released means I'm double dipping on that).

Also I just got a e-mail from UP stating that my welcome to the space show DVD/BD pre-order has just shipped.

I'll probably be ordering the nadesico rerelease from nozomi, as although I've got two copies they are the UK and Aus versions which were based on the original ADV releases (they rereleased with changed sign subs).

I got my Spice & Wolf set through yesterday as well :D

I've got the first two or three original ADV US volumes (with the overlays) and the last complete collection they released (without the overlays), but since the nozomi release has remastered video alongside the gekigangar 3 OVA then it's a instant pre-order (longside the long list of other pre-orders I made around the same time that was listed on UP)

I've got a R1 ADV thinpak boxset of it (I have no idea where it comes in the release timeline ... it was in my backlog for ages before I even watched it). I'll have to rewatch it before deciding whether to double dip as I currently cannot remember the series at all (and September is not a good month for me anyway with several other releases I want already ....

edit:

Watched From Up On Poppy Hill earlier ..... from the start you can tell it's a Ghibli from the style and story wise it reminded me Ocean Waves, i.e. more slice of life rather than fantasy. The story centres around a high school girl who raises flags up a pole in front of her house each morning. She is a sensible girl who works hard at her chores. The story has two main facets ... a school based element around the club building and a family based element concerning evens in the past and what it means or the present. Overall I enjoyed the film, I can't say that the score was outstandingly good (like some other Ghibli films have been) but the animation was very nice.

I've just spotted it at up1 after your post, and ordered (I think this will be my third or 4th time for the series*), which is helping make september expensive for discs :p
I've also got James Bond and a couple of other series on pre-order :p

P.S.
I had Spice and Wolf novel 6 arrive this morning, rather unexpected as I hadn't received a shipping email (that arrived this afternoon).

Hmmm ... the rest of my canvas were supposed to be delivered today ... but the incompetents at the courier company decided they couldn't find my street (despite living in a residential area of a city instead of the middle of nowhere) .... hopefully they will come Monday ...

edit:

Finished a rewatch of Nantsuiro Drops the other evening. Not an amazingly good series but a reasonable standard magical girl genre offering. The characters aren't that deep and it as the usual sorts of twists and undecisiveness that you'd expect ... the main male character isn't as bad as they usually can be though.

Could I get some recommendations...

The only anime I've liked is Akira, I loved it and I have a special version of some sort on dvd which is just amazing. If you showed that to me now for the first time I would never guess how old it was, its fresh and awesome.

Now, I've tried other anime, and I just can't get into them. They're all either too immature, too stupid, or the other way and just totally dull/boring. Ghost in the shell (the movie) is one that bored me, and countless anime I've watched I've just found dumb.

Is there anything that can match Akira for its dramatic tone, pacing and epicness?

I thank you if you can find me anything that I deem enjoyable.

Cheers

I've never understood the cult following Akira has. I watched it. It was okay, but nothing special. Certainly not one I plan to watch a second time.

It holds more of a sentimental value to me along with Ghost in the Shell as they were the first 2 animes I had seen. Haven't seen them in about 10 years though so I'm not sure what I'd think of them nowadays.

It had to happen sometime.
I finally got an order cancellation for my 5cm per second blu ray order, it was only a few weeks away from two years :p

edit
I had put confirmation, not cancellation.

I did wonder when i saw the forum mail :( ... of course there is the option of the Japanese Global edition release if you can playback Region A BDs.

Of course a US/UK release would have to be very special for me to dip again given that I think I might have it already :)

Watched a few things over the weekend ...

Ladies vs Butlers ... not big and clever but with lots of fanservice. Lots of fanservice ... probably to much really. The characters are a bit meh really and I suspect that there is a plot there somewhere ... but don't expect to much.

Whisper of the Heart ... in preparation for this weeks release of the next two Ghibli films on BD in the UK. It's one of my favourite Ghibli films and it's nice that it is available on BD.

Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko ... ok this is a weird series. Mostly strange characters without the usual weak male lead ... the male lead here is about the only member of the cast who isn't some sort of freak. The art style of some of the female characters is a tad ... odd ... with large mouths but I seen a lot worse. I do find the Aunt character quite amusing.
