**The ASrock 939dual-SATA2 (ULi M1695) thread**

Hello all, have been lurking a while. Finally upgraded my box with one of these motherboards and an DH-E6 venice 3000+ at the weekend.

So far, very pleased. My old motherboard (or maybe CPU) had become nightmarishly unstable. It was one of the pre-400fsb nforce 2s, an MSI K7N2G-L. I'd been running it with an XP3200+. It had been fine for a few months but I think the motherboard just wouldn't take it in the longer term. I ended up having to run the CPU at XP2500+ speeds just to get something approaching stability.

Anyway, have been running everything at stock so far. It's rock stable and I'm very pleased. All my directx games used to crash regularly but no crashes so far. Prime 95, looped 3dmark01 and media player looping through all my mp3s overnight didn't cause any problems either. A few things that I didn't realise were hardware problems are now fine (e.g. the KotOR2 patching process, which always used to freeze on me, now works).

Just one query: I'm getting a score of about 3000 in 3dmark 05. Is that normal for my rig? I think I used used to get about 3500 in the old setup but it's been a while since I ran it.. I'm sure it's not the AGP drivers, as there's no problem with framerates in games. Specs are below (old rig was as below but with XP3200+@XP2500+, MSI K7N2G-L and 2x512 Crucial single sided).

ASROCK 939dual SATA2
A64 3000+ DH-E6 'venice' bios rev. 1.2
Inno3D 6600GT AGP 128mb
2GB RAM (2 x 512mb single sided Crucial PC3200 + 2x512mb double sided Crucial PC3200)
Audigy 2
Hiper Type R 480w psu
WinXP Pro SP2

I am having the same problem with 3DMark05, my score was almost 15% better with my XP-2500M @ 11x220 using the same GPU

My current system is as follows;

MSI 6712 mobo
Athlon XP2600+
1GB RAM 2700
GEFORCE 6600GT
Antec 380w PSU
120gb HDD (IDE)

I am considering getting one of these mobos as well as an opteron 144, and 512mb more of 3200 RAM so I can run dual channel at that speed. Would I dectect a big increase in my games? I play all the latest titles like COD 2, FEAR and The Movies, and at the moment they play OK on near high setting at 1024x768, but do get a little stuttery. I also dont know a lot about mobos, so would there be anything stopping me, in say 6-10 months time, buying a new SATA HDD for games installation to supplement my existing drive, and getting a PC-I graphics card, for example a 6800GS, or 7800GTX?
hi,

if the 1gb is 512x2 you'll need 512x2 of the 3200 to stil run dual channel.

those upgrades would be fine.

Hi - I already have 1 512mb stick of 3200, I am currently running it with 2x256 of 2700but I will get another 512mb of 3200 memory. Would those upgrades be worth it in terms of performace? What benefits would I see?

I've finally got my system up running. The 450w PSU failed to work with my asrock-dual so had to buy a Hiper 580w.
oh dude you rock that was my only concern was weather my Hiper Type R 580w would work on this board.

to be honest i would just pickup a dual channel kit of value ram

Me too, lost 900 marks "upgrading" from a Barton @ 2200 to the ASRock Dual and an Opty 146 :(

By far the biggest increase you will see in your games is by upgrading your 6600GT even with an XP2600 (is it overclocked?). I would be looking at a X50XT PE and above.

Instead of the 1.55v mod has anyone done the 1.6v+ mod with the resistor?

Here

What is the source for this mod ?

Just found it by googling. Came across the forum above detailing the mod.

Seems better than the ocw method as it just adds a set % onto the Vcore so you still have good range adjustment and seems to allow more than 1.55v.

Someone here must have done this mod?? :)

Ahhhh, I missed that link the first time around.
Maybe I'll try it with my second Opty 146 in a few days.

Wow dude so you're saying I take the little wire, and basically rip it apart and put the end in the hole next to it, then fit it to the mobo, with the edge of the connector not connected to anything? Seems kinda risky, why doesn't it fit in the first place???

Easiest solution is to cut down the middle of it to split it and then connect it. Have had to do this a couple of times.

hi all

well...upgrade time looms close on the horizon (monday!)

im looking at getting an opty 144 and "a motherboard". its gotta have agp, so im thinking about this one.

few questions about this mobo:

1) what kind of o/c can i expect? i see threads where people are getting 2.7GHz easily with no voltage changes...

2) agp performance- the thread about this has me worried- am i going to see a drop in performance over the machine in my siggy?

hi,

the asrock bios is locked at a max fsb of 274 so 274x10 is the max possible on the supplied bios, other bios' from ocw (beta 1 & 2) have removed that.

i havent noticed any agp performance drop seems to run bf2 fine :).

With an Opteron 144 you'll be seeing 274 x 9 as your maximum overclock using the stock bios. That will be 2466Mhz which is a decent overclock. The voltage needed wil vary from chip to chip. My 144 would only run at that speed with 1.5v.

AGP performance is spot on with my X800. Dunno what others are doing wrong !

X800 12 pipelines 515/520
Aquamark - 70,000
3Dmark 01 - 27,000
3Dmark 03 - 10800
3Dmark 05 - 4800

Hi mate, i have just moved from a very similar spec to yours, the only difference being a 6800nu and an athlon xp 2100+ @ 2900+ speeds. Same RAM and nf7-s too.

I have an opty 144 clocked @ 2.5 on stock volts and using the ocw beta 2 bios. this bios allows a HTT above 273, and i have mine stable at 280. I only built it a few days ago so havent tested all games, but gave half life 2 a whirl and i have definately seen an improvement; its just silky smooth now, and on the stress test i have had an increase by about 15fps. I got my asrock and opty for £140, but be quick cos i think the opty prices are rising every few days. Im selling my my nf7s and xp chip so it will be an excellent upgrade for <£100. And you are future proofing with a pci-e slot on this board too, well worth it.

has anyone managed 300fsb on this board yet?

would be nice to have what is essentially an fx55 under the hood...

TG

I had mine at 310 at one stage but didnt want the RAM on such a big divider; i ran super pi 32MB calculation and it managed it fine (couldnt be bothered to test it longer, but i had some problems rebooting, so wasnt that stable) I stayed at 280 because it gave me the best clock at stock volts and had my RAM running closer to its stock speeds.
