The Asus ROG SWIFT PG278Q – a 27” 1400p 144Hz Monitor with G-SYNC

Been getting screen flickering on start recently. Goes away after a few minutes so it's not bothering me.

What's odd is that when I switch to my laptop (running 5200m) @ 120hz I don't get it at all.

It still looks and runs ok even at 30fps it's not a fast moving game anway

I don't really care about it being fast or slow moving, after playing games with GSync at 140 FPS, I refuse to play at 30. Civ5 is improved by 144fps. Console commands to "unlock" it that "may cause issues" that they won't fix, I'm also not accepting.

Stupid decisions made to appease the console crowd so they aren't as embarrassed by their £400 paperweights. The same thought process that drove the downgrade of Watch_Dogs.

I just can't bring myself to support developers that spout this "cinematic" nonsense. 24hz/30fps needs to die. It was outdated when it came about (where it was selected as the minimum framerate they could get away with and not have the sound mess up).

you notice it while gaming?

You can notice the effects of it when gaming. For example, a given shade of green vegetation looks darker at the top of the screen than the bottom. You don't see nuances of closely matching green shades as you might on an IPS model. But it doesn't really hit you in the face when gaming unless you're playing a game with a graphics style that uses lots of large areas of solid colour. Like cartoon or anime style.

This thread is a bit "TLDR". I've read some reviews but can i get some consumer opinions on the following:

-- Colours - How bad are they?
-- Backlight bleed - Any horror stories?
-- How black is black?
-- Viewing Angles - Being TN, it won't be good. But how bad?

I have the BenQ XL2411T at the moment and:
-- The colours aren't great, but not too bad unless you put it next to a decent IPS!
-- Black isn't black of course, but is the ROG Swift any better?
-- I got lucky and have next to no backlight bleed :)
-- Viewing angles can be annoying when i'm moving about a bit, the shift in colours and contrast is quite obvious.

Thinking of getting this monitor at Christmas you see, as i don't think it's time for 3840x2160 yet and i mainly game.

I calibrated mine and all the primary and secondary colours are fully saturated and on hue almost perfect. On green the hue is slightly off at 75 & 100 % saturation but it is not by a lot and you will never notice an issue at all. Colours are as they should be. Some IPS models oversaturate colours which gives an appearance of a richer red for instance but is in fact oversaturated from the sRGB colour space points.
The 27" TN have much better colour than 24" ones anyway.

Never had IPS without BLB but i have had 3 perfect TN inc the Rog Swift.
Black levels are as good as TN or IPS really can be i guess, depends on lighting as always for perceived black depth. My blacks at 120cdm2 brightness measure 0.125 cdm2.

I have gamed on IPS, VA and 27" TN and during games and head on looking at the middle of the screen from 2ft and i have no issues with this TN. I don't exactly move around at all. Only thing you can notice is on big blank coloured screens like windows startup the top is a bit darker colour than the bottom but other than that gaming is excellent.

This monitor has so many great features. For instance playing The Evil Within, capped at 30fps at 60hz is looks a bit sickening during motion, no problem i clicked the overclock button on the monitor to 144hz and now the game still runs smooth but at 48fps (without judder even though g-sync is not active on this game) and it not as blurry or juddery, with less lag. I did not use the unlock framerate command as this gives very uneven fps.

Never had a monitor that didn't have something i disliked. With the Rog i can't fault anything at all (unless you need to view things from weird angles all the time, which i don't). Everything works together to form the perfect package.
Perfect grayscale yes, 2.2 gamma yes, calibrated colours yes, perfect fastest response times with no or very minimal overshoot yes, no BLB yes, CRT like motion option yes, high hz when needed yes, pretty much no input lag yes, very accurate out of the box calibration yes (or at least mine was), minimal and responsive menus with just the options needed yes, thin bezel yes, non reflective yes (personal preference), sturdy stand with all the adjustments. And of course G-Sync the cherry on the cake. All in a reasonably easy to run 1440p res.

I will only upgrade now when they make a 4k 144hz version of this monitor

Hope this helps you decide mate.

Colours - How bad are they?
Great, it's an 8 bit panel and a world away from the 2411 (I've had both btw).
Backlight bleed - Any horror stories?
None at all
How black is black?
Better than my old Hazro but worse than the Eizo, still good though.
Viewing Angles - Being TN, it won't be good. But how bad?
Noticeable on the desktop if I move my head around.

Yes.

-- Colours - How bad are they?
They are great - not quite IPS but but coming from the benqxl2411t(which I owned and loved for a very long time) it will be amazing, you cant even compare the 2

-- Backlight bleed - Any horror stories?
None that I can see

-- How black is black?
Set it up right and it's very black - not as good as my IPS but still outstanding.

-- Viewing Angles - Being TN, it won't be good. But how bad?
side to side fine, if i'm looking down then meh - better than any TN i've seen before though.

Again, coming from that Benq, everything is better in every way, that Monitor was decent for a long time but this is without a doubt the best gaming monitor available, it's colour reproduction is good - i've been quite happy to have a tv show on in the background while working on the same screen.

Thanks for the responses! Much appreciated!

I think that settles it then... :D

@Rossi, you'll need a swift before we start on the new borderlands game!!! Order today and you'll be set for release day!!!
