Sorry but if there is late night chit chat and banter then that simply indicates that there is a desire for it among forum users. If you consider it dross the simple solution would be for you to avoid it.
If you felt a topic worth mentioning and didn't want it lost you could create a thread and if people considered it had merit people would post in it.
You give the transfer thread as an example as to why we shouldn't have a banter thread but that argument is weak at best as the point of having a banter thread would be to a) satisfy peoples desire for gossip and banter and b) to allow threads such as those to remain on topic.
As I said in a few weeks the January transfer rumours thread will be going up (I've already seen Cahill linked to a few clubs but thought it too early) the mods then have a choice of either letting it go as the summer thread did or moderating in a much stricter manner in a way that discourages something people obviously want to engage in (going on the sheer size of that thread).
Also how would it be a chore to find something? It's not like we get 1000's of posts a day even with a busy thread like the summer on you only had to go back a max of 5-6 pages if you checked each day and that only takes a few minutes to skim. If you know it's just going to be dross you won't want to read you don't have to bother you can just stick to the lovely on topic legit threads.
Still it's the mods call at the end of the day
