The Battlefield 4 Thread 2015

Personally I would go with the 144HZ IPS over 144hz TN.

The majority of people who have used the acer IPS 144HZ and swift have noticed very little to no difference when it comes to the motion clarity, however, the better image quality/colours, viewing angles/no contrast shift, much lighter anti-glare finish are noticeable differences and imo would out weigh the slightly better motion clarity of TN. IIRC badass in his tftcentral review said that he actually preferred the acer IPS 144HZ over the swift as there was no overshoot like on the 144HZ TN panels.

Unfortunately with these new IPS panels though, they seem to be very sensitive to pressure as none of the manufacturers can seem to produce a large quantity without back light bleed.

I am hoping that the upcoming dell 144HZ gsync screen is using IPS, at least if anything is wrong with it regarding back light bleed, you have excellent customer service.

But yes, the monitor is definitely the one thing that I would spend the most on (same for all peripheral devices tbh), if you are spending quite a bit of money on your PC to get games running well and looking as good as possible then you should be reflecting that with a top end display, although monitor prices are taking the **** now i.e. that asus 34" screen.... especially with top end TV's costing not much more.

I wouldn't recommend 4k for gaming really. 4k is overrated, 1440p to 4k isn't hugely noticed at all. And it requires too much power to run with good settings and your likely to see frame drops. I have a swift and 4k monitor. Swift over the 4k anyday for gaming.

Having bf4 1440p solid 144hz ultra maxed out (4x MSAA) with 2x 980Ti's. It's ace.

60hz is horrid now and hurts my eyes, feels really sluggish. 60-144hz was far noticeable than 1440-4k. I couldn't beleive the difference when I first swapped, I was like WOW. Why did I never get this before. So so smooth. Not only that but it's much more enjoyable.

I recently binned my XL2410T 120Hz as it developed a yellow tint to it.
Been playing BF4 on my LG 29UM65 60Hz IPS.. (Albeit at 1920x1080 res rather than 2560x1080).

Have to admit I'm not really missing 120Hz!

I haven't used any of these 120+HZ gaming displays but for "smoothness", I find games to be very smooth at 60HZ (I use vsync in game or more often borderless windowed mode as the windows vsync is often much better than in game vsync... this helps with smoothness and of course removes screen tearing but adds a bit of input lag) and I am very picky about stutter, I can't play any game that has FPS <50 and a frame latency of more than 20ms (20 isn't "perfect" but 15ms or less is buttery smooth), heck I even have to use the hated "soap opera" smooth motion feature on my panasonic TV as the slight judder when watching TV/films ****es me of :p

Although I can definitely agree that when it comes to the motion clarity of 120 VS 60 displays that the 120+ will be far superior.

@archeum

Why aren't you playing at 2560x1080?

Haven't adjusted to it yet :p
My 21:9 used to be my secondary/productivity monitor until my BenQ 120Hz went in the bin.

I tried it in ARMA 3 though at 2560x1080 and enjoyed it, will give BF4 a shot at that resolution when I play it next.

Those Dell/LG 21:9 monitors have a fairly decent panel for gaming mind - if you enable gaming mode and disable 1-2 post processing features in the OSD (not sure the setup on the LG) the input latency drops to tolerable levels and the panel is reasonably quick at handling big transitions (180 degree view change in game will stabilise almost immediately unlike more traditional non-game TN and IPS 60Hz panels which usually have some residual imagery issues) though it is nothing like the Swift for motion clarity tracking something.

Definitely do, the 21.9 aspect ratio is very immersive and gives a you slight advantage with regards to seeing more at your sides, very handy for the aircraft play!

Took me a bit to get use to it as well, I moved my HUD UI to the centre but put it back to the side of the screen not long after, was just getting in the way too much and it allowed me to make the mini map a lot bigger so easier to see enemies etc.

For FOV, I use 85.

EDIT:

Yeah the 21.9 29" screens have exceptionally low input lag, as you said, the dell has a lot more processing stuff enabled by default though so input lag and response time is higher than out of the box LG, asus etc. 29" screens (they don't have any options to mess about with except for the response time setting, high makes motion clarity a bit better but introduces ghosting on dark to bright or vice versa transitions)

Some of the 29" screens can overclock to 75HZ as well which helps, I think the dell achieves 75hz easier than LG displays though, I can't get over 60hz without frame skipping.

AFAIK the first generation of the Dell OC quite well, the 2nd generation which I believe is the panel most often found in the LG are a lot more hit and miss.

Mine does 75Hz with ease - throw in gsync and say 80Hz coupled with a little better motion handling and it would be a serious gaming monitor with great image quality.

Yup I am hoping that Dell/LG gives us a 29-32" 21.9, 100+HZ free/g sync, IPS monitor before the end of this year....

Personally I wouldn't touch acer stuff, awful CS and QC. I would save up a bit more and get this instead:

Does the 280x support freesync?

If you don't want to spend any more, then assuming you get a good one and never have to deal with acer, then yeah it will be a very nice upgrade, if anything is wrong, just use 14 day CCR with ocuk.

Yeah unfortunately my 280x's wont support Freesync :(

That's a nice monitor but more than I want to spend really. My build has all been done on a budget lol. Not sure what to do really. Buy the BenQ and do a little more overtime perhaps lol?

If you intend on keeping the monitor for 2+ years then I think the extra for the benq would be worth it.

Might be worth waiting a bit longer anyway as the benq has dropped substantially, it was £500 not so long ago.

I've had my current BenQ for near 5 years now, so you're right spending the extra would be worth it if I'm looking at the same kinda life out of another one. Not sure if I can wait though. Once I want something I don't like waiting lol!

well here it is all finished guys.

Although Ive now got an issue with DisplayPort and gaming, constant black screens flashing on and off.

Sorry thought I'd stepped into the Monitor subforum then.

Anyone on tonight?

Not tonight, going to watch the rugby!
Will be on tomorrow afternoon though if anyone is about.

well here it is all finished guys.

Very slick Tony, The pipes look like they are carrying handles!
Why is it full of milk though? ;)
It's a shame the GPU power plugs are red, given they are transparent at the PSU end.

Also are you using your monitor's DP cable or one that came with the GPUs

I love white cooling! Great job!!

RE Monitors I've spent over 1k on Dells before. In my opinion you really want to save up and invest in something that you plan to use for a few years. I've had the SWIFT for about a year now and it's second to none. I was boxing it up on Thursday night and everything from the monitor to the box is second to none. Yes people bitched about it being over priced but in my opinion it was a great deal. I have to admit that I did get some flickering when starting windows up to about 8 months ago when they improved the drivers.I also think having a GSYNC definitely improved my game - everything is so much smoother, especially when you are mid way through a gun fight.
