Ah it says only enable if you are using surround speakers or headphones - if it is enabled with any of the 2.0 options it will enable software HRTF which only reproduces a 3D effect with headphones - with non-surround speakers it will sound wrong.
EDIT: Its hard to find exact information on it but it seems that the speaker type settings have varying levels of EQing from wartapes having the most, then headphones, then TV, then HiFi and finally home cinema has the least on its own I don't think it enables any particular output configuration. That is then controlled by the speaker configuration option which enablese multi channel output for actual surround sound speakers and fakes it up with less speakers - which only works with headphones as mentioned above 2.0 speakers with the surround option will sound wrong.
Seem that the general advice is to use the HiFi settings if you are in a noisy environment or have average quality gear or the home cinema option if you are in a quiet environment with decent quality gear and enable surround if you either have actual surround speakers or decent headphones.
