The BMW Question?

Let me get this right. You agree that there probably isn't a better car than a 330 for my needs (and I did say regardless of cost), yet you wonder why they might be a little bit more special than your average car.
Am I missing something here?

Your probably right, I dont doubt that BMW's are great cars I just dont see why people praise them so much really, most of them are kind of bland in my opinion.

TBH I didnt pay much attention to what you said about needing a car with certain specs, but im sure that whether there is a better choice than a 330 or not is down to opinion.

Care to elaborate?

What about all the other turbo & supercharged 5's pushing out lots more power than Freefallers, they all rubish?

Just cause it ONLY does 0-60 in 7.7 seconds means its a pants car does it, only an idiot would knows nothing about cars would come to this conclusion, does this also make all the non 190Bhp Elises pants as well?
If you had your head screwed on, you'd be dangerous. We've already established on many occasions that the borders of my car knowledge extend vastly beyond yours, so any attempts to suggest the contrary are just going to amuse me :)

Fair enough, if you can't give me a proper answer because you don't know then we will leave it then :)

Edit - and if the above was an ironic noob joke - i'm in serious mode today so its right over my head... lol...

You need to reread that first sentence, and then analyse it in relation to my MX-5 comment. You also must have some interpretation problem, or you've neglected to read the posts preceding my RS4 comment and thus understand the context in which it was written. As you see fit to bring it up often, yet clearly don't understand, perhaps you'd best save yourself the mental anguish and forget about it.

To be fair, when you had the mondeo you did seem to sing there praises a lot, I saw threads where people would ask for advice on a car and clearly state they didnt want a mondeo, but rest assured you and Tesla were there recommending them...so people getting the impression that you are a fan boy is totally understandable.

It seems to be the same now with BMWs.

I rarely wasted my time when the original poster clearly stated they were absolutely not interested in a Mondeo.

It seems to be the same now with BMWs.

Things are not always as they seem.

I've found BMW customer service pretty terrible in my 1 1/2 years of BMW ownership, I wouldn't have bought a BMW if it wasn't an M car and I probably won't be buying one again as I don't fancy the new M3, or E90/92 in general and the M5 is too big for me.

It really depends how well you get on with your local dealer, but it shouldn't, and some of the service levels offered are a joke in my experience.

Without the slightest bit of a doubt they are VERY well made, VERY reliable and good looking. I think even the cheaper ones are good cars if you want a good reliable car. I dont think you can fault them apart from massive depreciation.

Clarkson must be one of the most down-to-earth car reviewers about (not that I really know any).
i've said it before and, no doubt, i'll say it again.

going to stick up for the old school fanboys here and agree older slower car's can easily be as much fun as a newer 'better' car.

My b reg Xr2 gives me every bit as much enjoyment as my Evo :)

oh and fwd is easier to drive than 4wd :p

Judging purely by brand is ignorant. Every manufacturer has their strengths and weaknesses.

In comparison with most companies, BMW has more strengths.

I like the E28, E30, E34 in black, e39 in black/silver and the, E32/38 in silver and every M5 :)

E28 or E30 are my favourite, but if I was after a daily driver, I'd be all over a 525tds or 530d like a rash.

Gosh, what a crazy thread.

I think BMW's are pukka.

I bet if people could afford 'em - They'd drive one.

I know that 330Ci's and M3's are common - But they still looks the NUTS and they probably drive even better.

...it's just the running costs that puts me off. BMW Servicing is mega expensive.

Servicing isn't *too* bad. Intervals are pretty big on the 330ci's (~16-17k) miles, meaning most people only need an expensive (either £250 or £350) every 2 years. In the years in between you'll need an oil service (my last one cost me in the region of £130).

Ive been on holiday and have missed what on earth the loaf of bread thing is all about, can someone enlighten me please. :)

On an unrelated note, is it your car that I've been driving past this week on Berkhampstead Road? :)

Driven or been in one? No I thought not. So what it doesn't go round a corner as fast as a 330Ci? This does not automatically mean it will be boring. Unlike the 330 it will feel like the speed you are doing, whereas in the 330 when you are going 60 you feel like you are doing closer to 40.

The thing with a slower car you can have a lot more innocent fun in one. You won't be worrying about the police on a country road as unlike the 330, you won't be doing in the 100mph area.

*and various other trollop*

My 330d was fantastic fun on the Nurburgring, not only that but it was fantastic fun on the Oulton Park track day I recently did. I'm pretty sure I didn't pip 100mph on either tracks, but did however keep up with the pace.

It was also great driving it back at 140mph on the autobahn - or setting cruise control at 115mph when I just wanted to relax. Comfy too.

Nothing broke on either track, nor has the car let me down in the entire year I've had it, being used as a daily driver around London, and as a cruiser to SW of France. The diesel-6 is wonderfully frugal when you need it to be.

There are very few cars which are anywhere near as capable as the 330 - yes there is compromise, but BMW has balanced that compromise better than any other manufacturer out there. I still feel that 330 cannot be beaten for everything that I demand of it.

That is why my 330 is fun for me, and why I'd never consider any of your pipe-dream sheds. Try actually getting out there an driving one, you'll soon find that they're quick enough to knock that chip off your shoulder ;)

This is turning into a who loves and who hates BMW thread which wasn't my intention. I was trying to establish who once had the view shared by some, that all BMW's are rubbish for a whole host of personal reasons, but then changed their opinion when circumstances changed and they were able to afford, justify, insure or drive one in the range they felt ‘worthy’. So far I think we have 1 such person anyone else?

My reasoning for asking this question was that in my experience some of the people who are the most vociferous about their dislike of the brand are often, though not always, those who are the most vocal in their condemnation of the image, yet the ones to whom image is often so important from a 'cred' perspective. I think if we look at the majority of the stereotype comments on this thread it is often from people who have a birth date in the 1980s. I think this is quite interesting as it shows that some of the younger contributors seem to put image higher than the ability of the car yet are quick to criticise the owners who they feel are buying the car solely for its image. Hardly scientific I will admit but interesting stuff and food for thought. Hell I don’t even drive one anymore and I had people calling me a fan boy on a previous thread, though with some odd spelling that lost me. :D

Now then, Rovers :p

Didn't get to 100mph on 'the ring?
