I'm amazed at the amount of filth that SRP managed to lift up off the paintwork.

i polished my sister's car the other weekend with SRP (love the stuff), i was chatting to a car friend about the amount of dirt the polish lifted from my sis's car's messy paint.. i was told "if you washed it better the polish wouldnt have been able to find any dirt"

advice from someone whose "into" detailing :D

how abrasive is clay? im thinking of doing mine soon. the paint is naff on my bonnet

It isn't or at least I don't think it should be. Clay catches all the surface contaminants as you rub it over the surface. I don't think it cuts into the paint at all.

just by the texture of it and how its made up, id expect it to be abrasive. my saw my brother clay his clio once, the "shine" was much more "flat" when it got washed afterwards

The clay I use is quite soft so I don't see how it can cut the paint:confused:

Clay will only cut into the paint if you don't use lube. Any instant detailing spray is fine to use as lube as this is just the stuff that comes with claybar "packs" such as Meg's (which I used last)

Since claying my car when I got it like 8 weeks ago I have not felt a single bit of dirt under my hands as I lube-rub it with shampoo on a regular wash and dry. The EGP continues to do its job of protecting the paint pores under it!

Hi Ho Silver!

mrk is the Zymol shampoo good? I'm almost at the end of a large bottle of Megs Gold so am thinking which one to get next.

IIRC the Zymol stuff from Halfords is actually made on license by Turtle Wax. Not saying it's rubbish, but don't buy it for the name ;)

I think the Megs Gold Class stuff is pretty good, although I'm using Chemical Guys Maxi Suds at the moment which seems to clean a little better plus it smells fantastic :D

all detailing clays have an element of abrasiveness be it very mild or very aggressive, but even the very mild clays can cause marring. Lube does significantly reduce the chances of marring but I always follow clay with a finishing polish anyway to make sure all is well

as for shampoo, you can't go wrong with the megs detailer range - shampoo plus or hyperwash

Maxi Suds is great. By far my fave shampoo.

There seems to be some sort of misconception with the idea of clay. Clay doesn't make your paint all super. You wash your car and then clay it to remove stuck contaminants. All the clay does is allows a super clean and smooth surface for you to work a polish or compound over (to remove imperfections) and then to seal with a wax.

You should never clay a car and then not protect it with a wax at the very least.

There are different levels of 'abbrasiveness' of clays available.

Just got myself a g220. I was wondering what you guys recommend to remove scratches and swirls. I will also be wet sanding and I can't decide between meguiars #80, #83 or Menzerna intensive polish.

Depends on the car you'll be applying it to, and your technique/experience.

Mine's BMW hard paint, and this is the first corrective machine I've used. I really struggled with #83, but the #80 is ok. I use the Sonus SFX range all the time though and find that the easiest to work/get a good response from.

Well its a black golf mk5. This will be my first time with the g220 but i have polished/wax by hand before.

Sorry, but what do you mean by struggle?
